Should he have said, "we belong here" .

Then the players could have rested on their laurels.

Have you heard of the parable of David and Goliath ?

How do you think Wilder got us to the position we occupied in his first PL season ?

Motivational managers V supporters.
Yes, he should absolutely have told them they belong there. Promotion isn't gifted no matter how it's achieved. I get the reality that we are the new team, a very new team that is the underdog, the outsider with nowhere near the budget of the rest but telling the lads they have no place there isn't on.

Playing the underdog is what we did very well but their place was rightfully earned. Yes we're the outsiders but don't for a second try and convince the squad they're there by accident, it brings the squad down. That squad was absolutely battered when Wilder left, the attitude of "we don't belong here" basically tells them it's okay we'll be relegated soon anyway. It really used to piss me off. The first season we went toe to toe with the biggest of teams and we gave them a game, that is exactly what football should be, that second season was a completely shadow of that squad and I do hold Wilder responsible for it. He was by far my favourite manager but his own stubborn attitude and insecurities let him down.

I hope I'm worried over nothing, but the 'needs signing in England' bit just sounds bonkers mad. Surely the second he says I'm happy to sign you hand the man a pen. Anything else leaves the situation open to change.

Knowing our media team they may want to film it at the lane?

I think it still is a thing but generally it happens so regularly now that there's a lot of blind eyes given to it and is generally accepted as part and parcel of transfers now. That said, if what's being said is true, Marseilles are going too far. Would be nice to see them slapped with sanctions for it but somehow doubt they would.

Figures coming out now from random Marseilles Twitter accounts citing an improved offer with bonus payments on top but still below asking price even including those bonuses. I hope its all bollocks, there's something about this which is very unpleasant. If they want him, they can pay the price. It would still be a bargain. Chucking in an extra fifty pence and then sending directors to go and talk to his dad is just snide.
It's like the old days when a club wanted a young player, going to see his parents, offering them a new kitchen or something just for them to persuade him to sign for them, underhand and seedy i guess,it's the way of football now. Those were the days when John Harris bought John Flynn i think for 5 k, Billy Dearden for 10k,i really miss those times.

Agreed, it does seem strange. We managed to sign Traore without him going to England (he said on the signing video that he’s never been to England before).

Is that the Marseille sporting director replying to it saying "the deal smells good"?
I think again it's a case of them doing all they can in the media to unsettle him. The fact the sporting director is replying to tweets like this seems suss

Why does he need to be in England to sign the contract?
International Love, sorry, law jurisdiction as we are not EU now. Will make it further legally binding should an appeal be made by OM. I'm not going any further on this either.

Why does he need to be in England to sign the contract?

Larouci went to Sheffield to sign before he joined the lads in Portugal later, so there must be a reason or he would have just gone straight to Portugal.

Does Bettis need to be there when the contracts are finalised? I don't know.

Sorry, maybe I'm being thick here, but in what possible scenario would any club be thinking they could appeal a contract between a player who has never played for them and another club?

Nothings changed. Getting boring now though this rubbish coming from Marseille's side. Miles off in terms of valuation anyway so it’s non starter at the minute. I’m confident he will be here next season whether that means signing a new deal or not time will tell.

I think they are at least trying to put him off extending his contract if nothing else.

It’ll be an ultimatum. A ‘now or never, Iliman’ from their side. They’ll be pressuring him to come or never play for OM.

Think you might be right. For what it’s worth I don’t think it will work 🤞🏼 I’m expecting some news next week if all goes to plan.
