Yes, he should absolutely have told them they belong there. Promotion isn't gifted no matter how it's achieved. I get the reality that we are the new team, a very new team that is the underdog, the outsider with nowhere near the budget of the rest but telling the lads they have no place there isn't on.Should he have said, "we belong here" .
Then the players could have rested on their laurels.
Have you heard of the parable of David and Goliath ?
How do you think Wilder got us to the position we occupied in his first PL season ?
Motivational managers V supporters.
Playing the underdog is what we did very well but their place was rightfully earned. Yes we're the outsiders but don't for a second try and convince the squad they're there by accident, it brings the squad down. That squad was absolutely battered when Wilder left, the attitude of "we don't belong here" basically tells them it's okay we'll be relegated soon anyway. It really used to piss me off. The first season we went toe to toe with the biggest of teams and we gave them a game, that is exactly what football should be, that second season was a completely shadow of that squad and I do hold Wilder responsible for it. He was by far my favourite manager but his own stubborn attitude and insecurities let him down.
