Given the fact that we had a football lesson for 70mins that's a superb result. The big lesson for Danny to learn is PLAY THE YOUNG UN'S they havn't let us down yet.

Does he need to learn that? He started with 3 youngsters, and brought one on off the bench at a crucial point of the game, rather than the other experienced options available.

The fact he threw Kennedy and Whitehouse in today, both surprises, shows he has faith in both players to contribute. Both have been in and around the first team for a while - he's clearly decided now is the time for them to both be more involved.
 
Biggest point of the season that. We might be short of quality all over the place but my biggest worry, lack of desire, has been answered very positively today.

I don't think he had a lot of choice tbh Kennedy HAD to start otherwise we were to be lumbered with Williams or Westlake, Fair play to Danny putting Whitehouse in though it might have been better to play him in place of Doyle or McDonald in a 4-4-2 rather than the 4-5-1 cum 4-3-3. The introduction of Ironside seemed to make a big difference, that lad is moving up the pecking order Cresswell should not get another game or Cofie for that matter.

Glad we've got two weeks before the next league game: a chance to assimilate Higginbotham and Murphy (maybe one or two more).

Surely Ironside has to get a chance to start alongside Kits now?
 
Really have had to eat my hat I genuinely thought we were dead and buried at 2-0.

Excellent point from nothing and with Murphy set to sign its all good.

True, but neither has big Dave Kitson - a vital presence and a talisman for the others. It's a blend that's required.

He did not have to start. It wouldn't have been even remotely surprising to see Westlake start with McMahon moving inside, or Williams starting and Hill moved inside. They are players that have featured a lot lately - Kennedy is not. DW put a lot of faith in Kennedy by starting him ahead of those with more first team experience.
 
Good point today. I would have taken that before the game. After 70 mins I would have snatched your arm off. When we scored I was sure we would get a point, even more. It was not a good performance! We got played off the park, were fully 2nd best and could and should have been 4 or 5 down by hour mark. However Long was excellent. We did however show some spirit, passion and fight. Ironside did brilliantly and completely changed things. We robbed Donny today, but fuck it. Lucky yes, but a good result. We took 7 points from the Christmas games and remain 2nd. Before if you had asked me I would have taken that. It was disappointing to lose to bottom of the league, but it really is the SUFC way. Teams around us have games in hand and if Brentford, Swindon and Donny win then it will be really tight at the top. However they have got to get results yet and there are a lot of games to go.
 



A "MASSIVE" point today. Could be a season turner that one. With other clubs with games in hand we just could not lose that today and though unlikely that was a stonking result.

Hard luck to Donny. Allegedly we robbed 'em, but hey how many times were we robbed in the Prem for instance. About time we had a bit of "Fergie" luck.

For once I hope we go out of the FA Cup next week. We must marshall all the players and get going again. We now need a mini run to put pressure on the clubs below. If we had lost today that would have been us almost out of the play offs in a few weeks with others with games in hand.

Hartlepool was just appaling but today we got some momentum back. It is all a marathon but as Mo Farah demonstrated we just got to dig in there and hopefully it will come good for us. We deserved to go up last year, like we did in 2003 (?) and didn't so let's make it this time.

We might have been battered for 70 minutes but today gives me genuine cause for optimism. We've lost Collins and Miller which are big blows, and after the Hartlepool debacle and Herman's foolishness we really were up against it against a side on bloody good form.

Getting Higginbottom is a really good move in my view, and the initial contract length makes sense with the option for next season if all goes well. What the Hartlepool game showed was that without Collins we lacked an organising presence, and you would assume as a senior pro of over 10 years Premier League experience Higginbottom would be able to assume that role.

Starting Kennedy and Whitehouse was a risk, but they've gone in and done very well and that bodes well for the rest of the season. Same again with Ironside, who has come on and been lively, everything Cofie has sadly failed to be recently. That a young kid has inspired a comeback like this is great news. I really hope they are given more opportunities to start.

I don't. Aside from the fact I'll be going, we need to win to maintain the confidence we'll have hopefully picked up coming back in today's game, and also in the hope we can use this competition to get some cash in. A trip to a big Premiership team would give us a welcome money-earner.

Today's selection was definitely a change in the use of youngsters. You are right that Wilson could have gone out of his way again to avoid using the kids, there were other options available.

When it's failed time and time again with the likes of McAllister, Williams and Cresswell playing out of position to avoid the use of younsters it's good to see us not folding completely when the youngsters are finally being given a chance. Well done to Wilson, I hope he tries to keep them involved more from now on.

Having not been to the last two games, it's great to read so many positive comments on here after the disappointment against Hartlepool and the predictable shit storm of criticism that followed. Wilson out, Keith Hill in ?? Were they fuckin serious? :(
Anyway, a bloody good point today although it looks as though we've pinched it off Donny. I'm in the "fuck em" camp too as there has been many a game when we've outlayed the oposition.
Really looking forward to seeing the lads at Oxford on Saturday. UTB.

How did Kennedy & Whitehouse perform Foxy? You have seen them in the reserves before, did this look like a huge step up for them?
 
I disagree with most people saying we were outplayed for 70 or so minutes, all I saw alot of was donny players getting our lads in headlocks and basically commiting GBH under the referee's nose and getting away with it.
The man must have been pissed in the first half and sobered up in the 2nd.
Chicken and mushroom pie was bob as well.
 
Thought we were robbed against Hartlepool and Flynn's goal for starters.

For fifteen minutes I thought, what have we got to worry about. Higginbotham coming in obviously was a big boost. Once they'd scored the pen, it seemed to give Donny a boost and our heads seemed to drop a bit. We were second to the ball a lot, Hill kept kicking the ball out of play, McDonald went missing as did Blackman. Donny wanted it more. Kitson seemd to be ambling about. Then, once Ironside came on and actually looked as if he wanted to score, the rest of the team seemed to pick up and once we'd scored the pen, I thought we'd go on to score another. I'd have subbed Kitson, he looked knackered, so what do I know! Kennedy was given a hard time by Paynter, a seasoned pro who knows how to get free kicks by fair means or foul, so under the circumstances, I thought he did OK. DIdn't think any of the youngsters looked out of place. Cofie came on and again did very little.
I just wish the fans would get behind the team when we're losing. Easy to do it when we're winning. Lots of grumbles re Wilson and criticism of players screamed at the pitch.
Crappy ground get away from, once again.
 
Full credit to Danny Wilson for the result today.
After Saturdays debacle he turns out a back four completely different to what we had expected and dreaded.
He had the courage to bring in young Kennedy and obviously been working behind the scenes bringing in a bit of quality in Higginbottom in the short term a quality signing.
White house and Ironside could be revelations.
Hopefully Murphy signs and I believe we now have more strength in depth than any of our rivals.
This manager will deliver promotion this season in the long term who knows but let's get behind them at home not just away

Sadly wasnt there today. Friends who went said we got battered for 70 minutes but fought back really well but by that time could have been 3 or 4 nil down. We need to start really imposing ourselves on teams and seem scared against some very ordinary sides. Hopefully with a few weeks off from league play we can get some players rested - I would give the kids another go Saturday and dont care if we go out and then we can set up for the run in.

Disappointed I could not get but unfortunately today had to be missed as been to quite a few away games recently (aswell as home games) and with me being back at work tomorrow; something had to give and Donny was the match I said I would miss so spent afternoon feeding the ducks at Graves Park with little un etc

Not at Oxford either but be back in a few weeks....
 
I don't agree thatr we were battered but we were well second best, and the limitations of many of our players was on full show. Whatever Wilson does, this squad is miles from promotion certainties.

Best thing about today was in the end, not givimng Donny 3 points and getting a match out of the way while we reorganise. I think, such is our squad, the loss of Miller will cost us promotion, unless this Murphy lad works out. And fingers crossed re Ironside. For all the excitement about youngsters, Kennedy didn't look ready yet. More promise from Whitehouse though.

Overall, we have too many players who aren't versatile / athletic enough. We might get away with it this season. If we got promoted, lots of surgery is required. I'd settle for that problem though.
