Sure we could secure promotion on 82 but we're talking about what is needed now to guarantee promotion.

What is the lowest number of points we currently need to guarantee promotion, ie the lowest point total regardless of what other teams do? I think you'd agree that this is 85. And the 'lowest number' is of course the minimum. The maximum is 94.

Anyway, I agree, it's not worth arguing about.

You didn’t read my post (or others)

You’ve pretty much just said the same but haven’t realised it…

We don’t need a single point if Boro and Luton fail to reach 82 points. So that means the minimum needed to secure promotion is 0 points…

If Luton get 9 points they reach 84. So that means the maximum we need to secure promotion is 3 points to take us to 85 points.

Anything more than 85 points is irrelevant. We’d secure promotion with 85 points

The maximum points tally that we can achieve is indeed 94 but that wasn’t the statement being made

I'd agree with that. We don't need to gain any more than 3 points. 3 is the maximum we need.

However, 85 is still the lowest, or minimum, points total required to guarantee promotion.

As mentioned, it's not really something to fret over. reckon we'll be okay with just one more draw anyway.

No it’s not. 85 is the maximum needed to guarantee promotion as Luton can’t get more than 84… any more is just a bonus we’d already be up

I was hoping Hudders would be safe by the time we play them, but that won't happen now. But they could go into the game knowing a win would guarantee safety. They will be fired up. It would be preferable not to go into that game still needing something.
 
Luton win Monday, then we win against West Brom then we’re up. It’ll be irrelevant what Luton do in their next two games as they can’t catch us

We know 85 is the number that will definitely guarantee promotion from our current position. So surely we need another 3 points at least? In other words, as a minimum requirement we need to take three more points from our final four games.

Perhaps we're both right?

No. You’re over Spec’ing this job…

That’s the most we need to secure promotion. By the time we play on Wednesday Boro and Luton could’ve already played out a boring 0-0 and the max that Luton could then get would be 82 and an inferior goal difference to us. Boro would be gone… so would the minimum still be 3 points or 1 point? 😉

Never mind all this minimum/maximum nonsense. The article says we signed Anel from Bordeaux. We didn’t. He was on loan at Bordeaux from Malmö.
 
Can't believe I'm weighing in on this, but here goes...

The actual quote is: "the Blades will need a maximum of three points from their final four games after their City test on Saturday."

If the quote was how many points do we need to guarantee promotion, the words maximum and minimum would be redundant - the answer is just three.

However, the bit about 'after their city test on Saturday' changes things, as it is projecting what we will need the next time we play a league game. There is uncertainty as to whether we will need 1, 2 or 3 points to guarantee promotion (it won't yet be zero at this point). The maximum is three though, so the quote is correct.
