Hot dogs

That's been suggested on the footy scran thread. As usual, despite it being a brilliant idea, it's shot down in flames for multiple reasons. In this day and age, with lots of street vendors and individual businesses, like at festivals, the potential is there.

The South Stand in particular has a good sized walkway. Rip the lot out and just have a load of vans parked in there on a match day (oh won't somebody think of the pollution!!).

Beer tents can be lobbed up in a couple of hours (like at festivals). The club won't bother because it would be seen as stepping on compass's toes and it's probably a bit more hassle than it seems.

But pies burgers and sausage rolls is just so shit and boring it's borderline unacceptable
or just rent out the existing kiosks on a match day. Vendor rolls up early with stock and equipment and sets up ready for punters. Takes it all home after or following day. would be like a pop up for existing local businesses. ie brewery, bar, street food, pizza, burger Taco type vendors. get rid of the current caterers completely as they are as dull and boring as possible.

Absolute disgrace last year the hot dogs were half decent they served it in a tin foil bag

This season no tin foil bag and just in a paper tray , bought one before the hull game and said I didn't want it

I can tell you from firsthand experience of working at pigsboro a few years back you are a mug if you buy in the ground 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Hot dogs £5 - pah thats nothing

A bottle of Dom Perignon in BLA BLA in Dubai is AED 4250 (£955) when you can buy it in Majestic in the UK for £175. I had to drink Moet last time i was there

The thing is that we outsource catering, they pay rent for the concessions, they pay endless numbers of zombie teenagers a minimum wage of £10.42 per hour to do one job each (the same person can't operate the automated cashless tills as well as pick up preheated food) and there will be a number of other drivers that push prices up...

They have to put mark up on items to make money and at the end of the day there is a choice. Either pay the money or risk not eating for 1 1/2-2 hours of your life.

Big issue i had this season was that i asked for a bottle of coke but they only had sugar free.... So i asked for fanta and then sprite which the response was "only sugar free"... Apparently they've removed the consumers choice of buying sugared drinks from the kiosks and instead i had a cup of tea with 4 sugars.

At Lincoln (inside the ground) this is the arrangement they very similar to racecourses where the vendors pay a fee for a pitch. Real ale, coffee, fish and chips, hot roast sandwiches as well as the usual fare.

They’re inedible.

Was desperate the other week so bought a hot dog. The roll was rock hard and crumbled into saw dust at the first bite and the sausage was what I’d imagine chomping down on a great big rubber dildo would be like texture wise.

Managed two gob fulls and into the bin it went
They say if you can imagine it, you can do it my son

Sod the food, Dozy will just have Guinness sellers walking up and down the stands during the game.

Local vendors would love it, as would the fans. Far more choice. You'd get more fans in the ground sooner as well in my opinion. I'm not rushing into the ground at 2pm for a fuckin hot dog, but roast pork sandwiches, a burrito maybe? Oh aye.

But again, it's easier for united to take some money off of a firm and let them do it. The easy way.

It would also appear that United don't have any Service Level Agreements with Compass otherwise how can they get away with charging what they do for the quality of the food and drink and the way the staff operate.

I never understood the people who would leave the first half early to beat the queue for the food. Like that is the experience they came for. I can understand with kids but the adults just going for a pie or whatever just eat before you go.
Particularly given the times football is on. It starts at 3pm. Who on earth eats at 3:45pm on normal Saturday?

Same with night games. “Oh I’ll have my tea at 8:30pm toneet”.

Madness.

Catering at the lane is embarrassing . Poor offering compared to most other grounds. 28,000 + customers is a great opportunity . If they offered the bars to independent event caterers they would flourish. Street food etc like at festivals .
they would have a vested interest in offering best service and not just be un motivated youngsters trying to earn a few bob.
What? The type you get at Tramlines? Oh aye... Great idea.. £10. 00 for a shite burger and flaccid chips... Can't fucking wait.... 😂 On the upside... All those angry ripped off punters might just get the atmosphere going....

The club must receive a lump sum from Compass which gives Compass free reign to serve whatever they like, shite or not. It could be the case that say, £200,000 per season for an agreed number of seasons that is paid to the club upfront. It could be the responsibility of Compass to employ the staff, buy in the food and drink then knock it out to supporters willing to pay exorbitant prices for shite food and beer.

It is a very nice idea having independent local breweries and caterers supplying their produce on match days. Would they all be in a position to commit a large chunk of cash upfront to give to the club, then shoulder the burden of risking them possibly not getting their money back over a season? Probably not.

As it stands, probably the best thing people can do is try to eat on London Road or the burger vans outside the ground and just buy beer inside.

Never understood why anyone has to eat and drink at a football ground. Just the same as the idiots that complain about the cost and quality of offerings on Ryanair.
Noone in the history of aviation died of starvation on a 3 hour flight and irrespective of their BMI index no morbidly obese idiot died without food over 90 minutes at a football match. Breakfast-Lunch-Tea. None correlate with obscenely priced salmonella ridden crap at the Lane.

People are daft enough to buy them, same with the piss they pass off as beer. Stop buying the stuff & the ✌️catering company✌️ will up sticks. If people had any sense they'd fill up before the game, far better quality from the burger vans dotted around the ground.
Even more baffling when you consider the amount of good food that can be found on London road

View attachment 153562These were the prices at Cardiff City earlier this season. There wasn't 1 person queuing. They must have thrown 90% of the food away.

I made the point in the Food thread, the products the likes of Compass sell aren’t overly subjected to extreme waste, in the way independents, pop ups etc could be. Claims are made without reference to this, the pop ups profit requirements as well as logistics* or any effect on the clubs income. Just thinking something is a good idea doesn’t mean it is if it’s not financially viable.

* Quick points. Vendors need to have different cooking, prep or heating facilities. Club pays? ROI? Getting ready. Ground opening early, staff costs increase. Picking there stuff up Sunday, ditto. Vendor not making it pay, leaves. At some point the myriad of people wanting to do it dwindles. We’re then down to car boot pay for a pitch scenario. Catering for our sort of gates isn’t like doing it for L2 sides. Vendors costs are far greater to increase whereas Compass etc can say what they will pay. Finally, any self respecting pop up will want to serve good food which takes longer than grabbing a pie from an oven.

At least use a bit of crayon and a fag packet when formulating business plans. In fact there’s a whole new section on the forum discussing similar problems.

The Blades £5 hot dogs have just been ridiculed on GBN live
I did a Blades customer survey last month. Under catering I ridiculed the hotdog prices and quality.
It’s horse lips and tongue meat ffs.
Told them I could produce 36 of better quality using Tesco products.
When families are struggling with cost if living that price is shameful.
Sort it Dozy, looking forwards to that Nigerian hollow rice dish you promised.

food prices people pay in England are self-inflicted wounds if they aren't challenged
on returning from my break in England we returned via Leeds Bradford airport
there was a Greggs in the entrance where a coffee and a bacon butty was 4 quid , a pound more than the one on the moor Iin Sheffield
but once through security into the departure lounge 2 food outlets, one was 4.80 for just a white coffee and 11.50 for a coffee and bacon sandwich , proudly advertised as on a special offer
the other one was an eye watering 14.95 for the same thing
both places were busy, personally didnt bother and waited till I disembarked back in Spain to eat Had a good night out at Spoons on ECCY Road on friday where prices were really good ,9-50 for a bottle of sauvignon but a Bottle of Pinot in Crystal Lounge cost 32 quid
If your daft enough to pay it ... up to you ... boycott all these rip off vendors ...

The contract signed will not allow the club to do this, all of the food and drink has to go through Compass, they will pay for the privilege.
Unfortunately the club getting a set fee every year with very little involvement clearly is the way they want to proceed.
The level of food/ service/ quality will never change unless people stop giving them money it’s that simple but people just can’t do it .
It’s so short sighted from a commercial side, 28,000 all wanting to drink and eat because it’s a quality offering would be worth a small fortune but you have to be willing to put the effort in

Totally disagree, you can have your own selection created by our team, then invite different vendors in during different matches, have specific areas/ equipment provided for them, it’s down to them to provide a selection, they pay you a % of takings, which will encourage them to sell as much as possible.
Not all will work out not all will fail, but you will end up with a good balance. It’s a quality business manager and quality food and beverage manager with a plan.

As I get older I get a little wiser, a colleague of mine used to go to the match straight after work as we’d finish at 6pm he’d have with him an extra box of snap ready for his dinner to eat he‘d say that he’s not eating the Sh1t from the kiosk on the kop and especially not at those prices! He was getting on a bit at the time but he’d have something self prepared then pop in for a pint or 2 in the Golden Lion my point being that failing to plan is planning to fail if you don’t like it do something different.
