"Clever"? It's just what owners/Chairman/DoFs etc are supposed to do.

Actually, what they are supposed to do is have a squad to start the season

A friend of mine once dissapeared on the beach. All that was left was his glasses, washed up on the sand.

About 6 years later he resurfaced with a case of amnesia, going by the name of Ted and working for the Salvation army.

Luckily I’d recruited heavily that summer and got some extra bodies in to my friendship group, therefore didn’t have any issues with going out to the pub with pals. We used to frequent a place called Lou’s. Because i’d recruited, we could still pint in “Ted’s” absence, we kept Lou’s in business.

It’s a similar story to what I think you’re trying to tell here.
