Sky Sports understands Sheffield United are poised to sign Walsall defender Darryl Westlake.
The highly-rated 21-year-old is out of contract at Walsall and Sheffield United have moved to lure him to Bramall Lane.
Blades boss Danny Wilson has moved for Westlake as the ideal replacement for Matt Lowton following his switch to Aston Villa earlier this month.
Westlake has impressed at Walsall since breaking into the team in the 2009/10 season when he was named the club's Young Player of the Year.
The right-back has made over 70 first-team appearances for Walsall and is regarded as one of the best young talents outside the top two divisions.
As Westlake is under 21 Walsall will be due compensation for the player with the fee likely to go a tribunal if Sheffield United cannot agree a deal with their League One rivals.

I'm of the same mind.

But then the ghost of Andy Taylor crops up in my mind as a lower league full back we thought was full of promise upon arrival...

And from a walsall forum...

Whichever, they must be barmy!

Edit, have some more:

I hope [he's gone], like Beevers and Taundry, he ain't good enough!

Agreed, he was hopeless, still have visions of Notts County away last season of how he was basically out muscled, out paced every single time the ball came near him

Now we've signed Taundry, I should think this is case closed. All signing Westlake will do is hold up the development of the younger right back we have coming through. We all know he's not good enough.

Shame about Westlake looked a good prospect when he first played for the 1st team but lost his way and never developed the way he should have. I guess he will join someone like Kidderminster where that's about his level.

He be 2 weak at Div 2, hope he makes it but he needs to spend time in the gym and bulk up a bit.

Now, I don't want to write the lad off before he's here, but it's always a good indicator when you look at previous club messageboards. Hmmmmm.

Taylor wasn't too bad until he got injured. He played for England u16's up until the U20's.
Looks like the injury destroyed his career.
Hopefully if we sign westlake he won't get injured.

Interesting potential signing. Great getting forward, young and highly rated. Originally an attacking player brought into the role of defender. Could be worth a punt, if available at a reasonable fee (which tribunals usually set).

Let us remember Blackwell signed Taylor. He was of no promise although not as bad as some people make out.

Who's the academy/ reserve Right back for us?

It's currently Jordan Hodder. He's a good player but he's not ready for the first team by any stretch!

I think it was Conneely and Brown in the reserves last year who have both left. Kennedy can play RB but is more of a CB so we definitely need two signings there in my opinion.

I'd give Kennedy a go for a few games, see if he's up to it.
At this rate we'll have a team full of loanee's or young un's

Paul Walker confirms it on Twitter

@walkerpw Danny Wilson has confirmed to me that he is trying to sign Walsall's Daryl Westlake. Clubs in discussions as we speak.#SUFC

If there's one club in England that can turn a skinny young Right Back into a quality footballer it's Sheffield United FC.

Plus he's out of contract and won't be demanding the world in wages.

Good Luck to the lad.

Players generally get a mixed reaction from the fans of the team they leave. To be fair Westlake doesn't - they all think he's rubbish.

At least we are on the right track, signing YOUNG players who may progress.
Better than signing shit over the hill has beens!

Thats a cunning plan.
Maybe we should try bigging Monty up someone just might take him then

Not getting at you Pedro but posts like this must give Monty lots of confidence. He seemed better than o.k. during our season in the Prem. As the porter said to George Best, "Where did it all go wrong? for Monty that is?"
