Last KICK of the game goals this season

We were not good but better tonight than at Swansea. That was a bit of a robbery.

Tonight you could possibly argue we might have been value for a point. But not the 3 points.

This means so much for us attempting going up. 4 points from technically “nothing”

It's an extra 3 points not 4.
We gained an extra 2 points against Swansea (as we were drawing) and an extra 1 point against QPR.

Total opposite to last season.

We must have had last minute goals scored against us in about 5 matches, particularly at home.
Can remember a few when Slav was manager.

I'm sure us older Blades will remember a critical last minute equaliser at QPR in the 70-71 promotion season. Laughing Ted Hemsley from memory. Hopefully an omen.
I was at a reserve match at the Lane that day. My dad and I left the ground thinking that the 1st team had lost 2-0. Then we were distracted by excited shouts so my dad and I rushed into the John Street terrace to check the pavilion scoreboard and it confirmed that the final score was 2-2!

Happy Days!

I'd take one every week for 3 points.

Ah yes, the draw at QPR in March '71 when all seemed lost. 😀

The previous Tuesday there had been the disaster of a defeat at Bramall Lane in front of a 40+ thousand crowd by promotion rivals Hull City when City's gameplan was to viciously hack our players down, particularly Tony Currie. At one point the referee stopped the game and gathered all the players together to try to calm things down. He was hopeless.

On the following Saturday I was at Hillsborough where Norwich were the visitors.

Most of my attention was fixed on the scoreboard which was giving the United score every 15 minutes. Those days you didn't have regular TV/radio updates on scores round the grounds.

With quarter of an hour to play the scoreboard showed United 0-2 down at Loftus Road whilst Wednesday were 2-0 up against the Canaries.

I never leave games early....but that day I did, sick to the stomach thinking United were again blowing their promotion chances and fed up with hearing the home fans cheering the news.

As I walked round the back of the Kop I heard a groan from inside the ground which turned out to be the sound that greeted Norwich pulling a goal back. So I'd even missed that. 🙁

I walked sadly up the hill that was Herries Road on the trek that took me back home to Longley..... only to find out on arriving that we'd salvaged a draw, the equaliser being a late, late penalty taken by Ted Hemsley.

Sadness turned to joy. We were back in business. 😀
