Ciaran Clark topless

There is then the handball by Baldock. It was hit at point blank range. His arm was in against his body in front of him. They didn't once show a straight on angle, maybe they didn't have it, and they didn't once debate that the ref probably concluded his arm was not in an unnatural position and therefore it may not be a penalty.
On Sky, after, they showed a slow motion where you could see that he’d stuck his right arm out and the ball hit his hand (it looked like he moved his hand towards the ball). It then ricocheted off his right hand and hit his left arm, which was tight to his body.
Under the old rules, which the championship use, it’s not a pen. There was no way either the ref or the lino could have seen it clearly in real time; they had to really slow down the replay before you could see it. If the officials can’t see it, it’s not a pen. Under VAR, it would have been given as a pen. (And their goal would’ve been ruled out, we had a couple of pen shouts that might have been given under VAR etc).

Genuinely, what is a penalty these days, particularly from a corner?

It seems players on all teams have basically free rein to wrestle their opponent.

In a way it's ok as long as it's consistently applied, but it seems bizarre to allow grappling to the extent that it's now happening.

The referees seem to stop corners being taken whilst they warn players not to grapple with each other. It happens time and time again and then when the corner's taken they carry on grappling anyway. This warning, then ignoring it, was going on repeatedly during the world cup. I think the referees need more help from the other officials. Once the ball is in play it's very difficult not to follow the flight of the ball and then fail to see all the jostling that's continuing, but without VAR it seems well nigh impossible to punish it.

I wonder what would have happened had Wigan scored as they broke away?

You literally cannot give a penalty anymore for shirt pulling after that.

Surely actually removing your opponents shirt and not even letting go is the absolute extreme of shirt pulling.

How can it not be a penalty? Yet somehow a point blank range blast at Baldock and yellow card incidents by a guy already on a yellow we're not worth mentioning 🤷‍♂️

I do have some sympathy with refs generally at corners. There’s so much wrestling, grabbing, pushing, shirt pulling that it’s impossible to say who started it and who is doing the fouling. Even on tv replays it is often very difficult to work out who is to blame.

Never seen anything like that before. The defender was pulling Clark’s shirt up, Clark leaned forward and put his arms up and the shirt came off. Clark grabbed it off him and as they broke, he ran all the way back to our area shirt in hand.

I thought the ref should have stopped play for Clark to get dressed. A flapping shirt being carried is a potential danger if a player trips over it, but the ref took no action of any sort.

I know it’s a yellow for a player taking his own shirt off, it should be a yellow for an opposition player undressing a player from the other team, in order to gain an advantage 🙂
It’s should have been a penalty as should all shirt grappling in the area. 👎
