Really don't understand all the damn negativity regarding next season!
Yes we will lose players, 11 gone already, it doesn't mean we will have a poor season I really do doubt some people when they think we will sell players and not buy any, DW is the best manager wee had in years and he's wise. From his interviews I can tell what he's doing. We've lost players every season and were many panicking because were in league one!

Goalkeepers: simmo has gone he was a high earner and good decision to release. Howard and Long can do a suitable job between them. If not Lee from chesterfield is a must.

Defenders: Lowton he's a mid earner tied down on contract can see him staying but never know. McGuire, he doesn't look intelligent but he is he knows that he needs to stay to further his development and I'm sure he will.
Collins: looked solid all season and missed him when he was missing.
Left-Back: LJF very happy but need cover shoul never rush a cruciate I'd give him a extra month off just to be sure! And we need cover.
Overall, happy but need cover RB,CB,LB call up a couple of academy lads to provide this.

Midfield: resign McDonald over anything this summer. Williamson and Quinn are out of contract so if we lose them it's not a bad thing because in effect they were off anyway. On the right, Flynn looks good, pace and willing to beat a man I he wants. On the left a out and out winger like Flynn but left footed! With two genuine wingers I think McDonald is most effective in spreading the ball, play Doyle alongside McDonald but introduce whitehouse who looks a very good prospect.
Overall, new LM needed and possible cover on the right.

Forwards: sign 2 young pacey strikers. Goal poachers, I'd take webber back just what we need at this level someone who can benefit of cresswells hard running, play cresswell but take him off after a hour and bring on Ironside someone who is young and hungry.
Overall, 2 forwards needed.

I could imagine something like this next season.

Howard
Lowton McGuire Collins NEW LB
Flynn McDonald/whitehouse Doyle NEW LM
Cresswell NEW ST

Finally, what are the expectations for next season. Poll.

Based on current transfer activity and sounds coming out of the club, I'm being optimistic by predicting a playoff place.

It's not looking great at the moment. We are desperately short of players in certain areas, mainly in forward positions. Essentially what we're being told (and its only the truth) is that we dont have a lot of money to play with and until the out of contract players make a decision we are in limbo, so will quite possibly miss out on targets.

Tis all a bit depressing but it is what it is. Lets hope any academy/development players that step up are good enough to make an impression. We must also hope that we can sell at least one or two of the high earners. If we dont, I cant imagine many new recruits will be coming in.

Quinn isn't out of contract by the way. He still has another year I think.

I expect him to be sold if we get any sort of reasonable offer though.

Where do you start? - That prognosis is so full of holes it would be like filling the Lane with water using a collander

Briefly:

1) We will not resign MacDonald because we cannot afford him.
2) Quinn has another year on his contract.
3) Flynn does not look good, isn't fast, and can't beat a man.
4) Lowton is more likely to be sold than not.
5) Signing Lee would necessitate a fee which we don't have and won't pay.
6) Webber wouldn't work for various reasons.
7) Two genuine wingers is the stuff of a madman's dream, something we haven't had for many years.
8) You missed out the fact we are stuck with Montgomery, can't get rid of him, and his huge wage is part of the reason we won't be getting these pacy strikers you mention.

I think the scenario is worse than people think and the next year will be one of the worst in our history, simply because of the baggage we are saddled with.

Agree with you that Whitehouse looks a good prospect though.

I find it difficult to disagree with any of that :(

Reading between the lines I'm guessing that our budget allows us to either re-sign McDonald, Williamson and Porter OR bring in a few new players. Unless we sell the likes of Monty or Quinn then we won't be doing much else.

I am of course guessing but that's my educated assumption.

Go on then; tell me where all these many 'holes' are.
As a starter for 8 you might want to look at what secretchief posted.
Then read some of the other threads related to this similar subject
Then get some of your facts correct
Then it might be worth debating with you at some stage in the future.

Glad you are positive though

Not everything on here is 100% fact, it's other people's opinion just like this is mine. However I know Matt lowtons brother and cousin and both have assured me that HE doesn't want to leave and will only go if he is sold by the board. I saw Harry maguire before Wembley on the golf course and he is the same. Kevin McCabe also publicly announced that he doesn't have the intention of selling lowton or maguire.

That's good news WW. It's all down to those pesky agents, innit?
I know that some of the senior players are telling these two that their development would be better served by playing regularly at the highest level they can and that is pretty much assured at BDTBL but not if they engineer a move to a Champ or Prem club, at this stage of their journey.

They only have to look at Slew and Mellis to see how careers can be blighted by agents greed. Look where Mellis is now, the failed, greedy little fecker - It's entirely feasible that he could have had at least three seasons of regular football with the Blades if he wasn't all "billy big time" - and we might not have been relegated as a result - keeping our home grown talent so we don't have to splash out on loans (that's where the Mellis million went).

They may well have both said that WW, I dont doubt it. However the bit I've underlined is more than likely to happen in regard to both players given our history in such matters.

The other thing to bear in mind is that footballers generally make the right noises but have every right to change their mind if the right offer comes along (and they generally do). McCabe didn't exactly say he wouldn't sell them, as I recall....and someone please correct me if I'm wrong.....he said that we were under no pressure to sell them but we have to be realistic and that if they get a better offer from a higher division we would probably not be able to match it.

Essentially what that means is, any player can be bought from us if the club/player receives the right offer. If a higher end Championship or Premier Leage club comes in for them, they will go. That goes for any other player on our books.

Yep. I expect that they have finally fixed the fax machine - just in case

Other clubs in the region seem to be busy despite needing to cut costs. Donny have apparently signed Robbie Blake and are about to sign David Cotterill as well.

The Cotterill to Donny signing is complete according to the BBC transfer web site

Not sure they have to adhere to the FFP rules though - having just been relegated I think they get a season's grace or summat. Besides, they had a load of loans last year so they probably have a lot of people to recruit for the new season.

Cannot see anything happening at the Lane for at least a fortnight, maybe three weeks - contracts expire at the end of this week then the lads that have offers on the table will consider their choices and their agents will then go into a period of negotiation on their behalf (with all suitors). That will take us up to the time the squad goes to Malta.

:tumbleweed:

A lot of people saying McCabe will flog them off anyway, yes that is so true! But if the player doesn't want to move he rejects the personal terms. Unlikely but could happen, of they were to go I'd rather them leave now rather than 10:59 on DD. just think there could be light at the end of the tunnel, willo Quinn and monty kmac ad cresswell are the highest earners and 4 of them could leave. This frees up wages and transfer funds! Let's keep te negativity away for a bit! It's only a month and a day since Wembley!

i have to agree with you SecretChief. i said if we lost at Wembley it would set us back years and i really think it will. how anyone can say Flynn is willing to beat a man is beyond me, they must be watching a different player. even when he has a 5 man midfield and 4 man defence, so plenty of cover if he loses it, hes too scared to try n beat someone, cuts back and lays it off. hes got a long, long way to go to be good enough to play for us and given our present options, thats saying something!

we'll finish where we finnish ........ to be honest i'm beyond caring......well i'm not really but if i kid misen on it helps !

There is always a chance we will get out of this division.................................. at which direction is the big issue.

Too early to predict anything. Wilson has done nothing wrong and hence I'll stick by his judgement rather than that of the "experts" on here. I'd ideally like it if we stopped talking about assembling a team of hasbeen ex players like Webber, Cotterill and Brown. Going back doesn't often work (look at BT last season) and the expectation is there before you kick a ball. Heres something new, lets wait until the manager signs his players, chucks some kids in out of the youth setup and we play 10 games. Its a bit out there and the schools are breaking up so there will be some bored people out there, but try it. You never know.
