I'd agree with you. Funny how these ideas are always spouted from the porcine half of the city.
I think I'd rather see the club fold than merge with that lot. A bit like when Huddersfield giants and Sheffield eagles 'merged' - 'Hudders' + 'Field' 'Giant'+'s'.

One of the things wrong with higher-level football is that money always wins above the fans & community that have supported through thick and thin. The Portuguese method of playing is the other - you know, slightest touch and down like a sack of spuds, but quite happily rake studs down the opposition player first. Says something that Ronaldo was the least likely to dive in their game yesterday.

But take the long view. If Beattie hadn't been stupid and gone in with a two footed tackle and been able to take a penalty at Wembley the whole season would have been worth it and we would be talking about who we are going to sign rather than who is leaving.

United has a bright future in the longer term the Academy really is producing talent. And that something we can all get exited about and be proud of. We are going to struggle at first to keep some of them but each age group is getting better. We have a good stadium we have an Academy that is both phenominal in terms of facilities and coaching, we have the infrastructure in terms of scouting that some Premier teams would be envious of. We were desperately unlucky this year with the timings of unavailability of Strikers, but in the long run this club will do well. Its not like the last long term blip as the stadium and other infrastructure was crumbling as much as the team. This time everything is in place its just getting the team right.

In the shorter term we should win more games than we lose and play decent passing football.

Don Valley has fantastic transport links, its surrounded by entertainment and leisure venues in an established event/sport hosting localle, its always been seen as a total waste of money and space and its owned by the Council. It has it all going for it.

I know England didnt win the World Cup bid, but maybe SUFC/SWFC/City Council could have joined forces and proposed a spanking new venue for Sheffield's bid as host city. If England ever bid for another major tournament, dont be suprised if this is Sheffield's stance next time around

A lot of the justification for a merger is that we can’t sustain two Premier League teams... Who cares? I would rather have both teams in the Championship on merit than a single merged team in the PL because we merged. Both clubs have history, generations have supported both clubs. I see no problem with keeping it.

The best thing is that we CAN sustain two teams even in the 3rd division. Both sides were selling out away allocations on a regular basis, both sides were averaging between 15-20,000 with 45,000 watching the Sty derby (including Beamback). The support is there for both sides.

I agree - There has been rumours of this for as long as I can remember as long as football is in it's current form of PL and English leagues it will stay this way... It won't be allowed to happen by us, the pigs and possibly other clubs..

Realistically you are looking at either Germany, a joint celtic bid, a scandinavian bid, or something else in Eastern Europe. Or England.

Pretty much agree that it will be joint if not the big countries- I thought that maybe a joint British bid would work but then I remembered how positive the GB Olympic team proposal was thought of at first.

The 'merger' idea has been talked about since I was a lad - and probably since my dad was a lad.

Unless the merged team had a billionaire owner, it would never be able to compete for top honours. We'd end up as a mid-table side, or worse. The lowest common denominator would take effect and we'd be back to square one.

I don't see why the Premiership couldn't support two Sheffield teams. It supports two from Manchester, two from Liverpool, quite apart from teams from the greater Birmingham area, and the north-east. Then of course there's London.

Maybe we could buy what's left of Rangers for a pittance and move it lock stock and barrel to Sheffield. Charles Green's master plan? ;-)

While a merger would make sense to a hard-headed businessman (rather like McCabe investing in property...oh, hang on) there are far too many emotions and decades of history involved.

Imagine you're married to a beautiful bird. Sure, she buggers you about and keeps letting you down, but you'll take it 'cos you love her.

Then one day, she gives you an ultimatum. You can carry on living with her (with all that entails...) BUT if she can't move her fat, ugly, slag sister in, it's all over.

I don't get the obsession with the 'Premiership' and the perception that it is the only place to be? I support Sheffield United FC, as has every generation of my family since 1889. I always will support them irrespective of their financial status or league position and could never transfer that allegiance to any other team. I love watching them whatever, though admittedly some weeks are better than others, but I know one thing without doubt, if Sheffield United FC ceased to exist, so would my interest in Football.

The capacity criteria for Euro Championships isn't quite as strict. Bramall lane could host a round of group euro matches with very little modifications.

I'm not even sure how the joint Scot/Irish/Welsh bid would work anyway.

By 2016 the tournament will be a 24 team tournament. The current 16 team tournament has 8 stadia, all of which must be >30,000 capacity. As such one would expect at least 10 stadia to be required.

The following are the stadia that host Football in each of those countries that meet the capacity limitation:

Ireland
Lansdowne Rd - 51,000

Next Best RDS Arena - 16,500

Wales
Millenium - 74,500

Next best Cardiff 26,000, Swansea 20,000

Scotland
Celtic Park 60,000
Ibrox - 52,000
Hampden - 52,000

Next Best - Pittodrie -22,000, Easter rd 20,000

So thats 5 stadia that meet the criteria. 3 of which are in Glasgow.

At a push they could use Croke Park, although that is also in Dublin, and Murrayfield instead of one of the Glasgow Stadia. That would leave them with having to upgrade Cardiff, Swansea, Pittodrie and Easter Rd, and would leave us with only 6 host cities, ina tournament with 3 countries hosting it (Glasgow (2), Edinbugh (2), Aberdeen, Dublin (2), Swansea, Cardiff (2)) - 10 stadia, but only in 6 cities. It would be somewhat of a logistical nightmare...
