Waa talking to my Wendy mate today who is quite high up in SWFC and there have been talks between the two clubs for a while now over a possible merge. I told him it was bullshit. Then he said it would be the best thing to happen to the city in sporting terms. Most of the younger generations have never seen us even close to winning anything and only some will remember their league cup. My mate then said: there would be less violence at football matches, a bigger ground, more fans. I still disagreed, left him and said I hope we never see a merged team but I would go and watch them. Would you??

No

No way, there is always the presumption that more fans will watch a merged team.
What bollox I think the opposite is true and less will go through the turnstiles.

No to a merger, no to watching them and if you think there would be less violence.... we have blades fighting blades when things don't go well, what would it be like if we merged! Do you think that Blades would stop being blades and pigs would stop being pigs? No.

Rears its head every few years but i for one would be completely opposed to any merger. I'd follow Chesterfield or Sheffield FC

At a push i'd switch my allegiance to Sheffield FC, but most likely would just give up on supporting football altogether.

You are right Swiss. Neither club's supporters would be up for a merger. This has been rejected so many times. Any such plans should be consigned to the rubbish bin.

I think people's protests before it happened would be very diferent to actions aterwards. Once there was no more United or Pork to support, many football fans would support the next best thing on offer, and in time the next generations would know no different.

Having said all that, I don't want it to heppen and I don't think it ever will. The higher saleries are driven and the more plastic the overall experience, the more I enjoy wallowing at the depths of the Brentford's and Rochdale's.

Everyone's now cannon fodder for the plaything's of foreign billionaires. They can keep it.

No, No (998 times more).

If I lived in Sheffield I would follow Sheffield FC but as I live in Leeds I would probably follow Guiseley - great beer and great pies I am told...

It makes sense, think about it a merged team could play at the sty until a new larger ground was built somewhere fairly central in Sheffield, of course this would be some way away from Owlerton so the O**ls nickname would have to go. We have a perfectly good academy set up at Shirecliffe which would be ideal for a merged team, then we would have to think of a name ................... Sheffield City don't sound right, we can't have Steelers that is taken a merged team would have to be called UNITED, the new larger Stadium would be on Bramall Lane which is near on central and close to the train station, Parkway etc As for a new team strip well seeing as the merged club would be called SHEFFIELD UNITED and play at a new stadium on Bramall Lane with an Academy at Shirecliffe and nicknamed the Blades in recognition of Sheffields knife making past, the colours may as well stay red and white................................

:D makes perfect sense to me anyway:D

I've said this before, but I'm one of the many fans from either side of the city that have moved away from Sheffield and whilst my team may be in my heart, then the city certainly isn't, so if there was a merger, I for one (of very many) would NOT support the new mergered team, but look to a much more local team, such as Lincoln United FC (yes it does exist).

So in this case 1 + 1 does NOT equal 2, more like 1.01.

Daft idea unless you use metalblade's logic above.

Wouldnt want to see it and as i have said before i would rather be in League One than being a plastic Premiership club. However dont poo poo the idea quite so readily. It is pribably closer than any of us could ever imagine. Yes the short term actions from many existing fans would he a walk away but just look around the country. we are perfect for some billionaire to come in and take the reins of Sheffield cc (thats what it would become). The cradle of footballing civilisation emerging from the ashes with a supporter base of in excess of one million people. Give it three years and we are winning games weekly, flying up the leagues heading towards the premiership and a 50000 stadium, it would be filled weekly. It makes perfect sense.

That should read Sheffield FC. Bloody smart phone.

No from me, would not support a merged team, If I went anywhere it would be to Sheffield FC, and then you would have a hard job getting me out of the Coach and Horses, which has the best beer in the world..................

Its common sense to merge its the only way Sheffield could sustain a prem team as we dont have enough cash backing for 2 clubs, but common sense doesnt count here , this its too tribal.
RADICAL CHANGE IS THE ONLY WAY SHEFFIELD WHO BETWEEN US HAVE 1 POXY RUMBLELOWS CUP WIN SINCE 1935 TO CROW ABOUT WILL EVER ACHIEVE ANY REAL SUCCESS
Wed get 50k gates in 1 enlarged stadium , , could focus on the prize instead of just beating the locals
but too many closed minds for it to happen

As a commercial overview I think that half the fans of each club would support Sheffield FC in disgust and half would follow the new team so we would be back with 2 clubs split in the city with those like myself that no longer live in the city having no allegiance to either and therefore following another local team. To me that would be York City. The heart will have been ripped out of Sheffield football and stolen from the communities that built it. What would they call this abberation? Sheffield Dons or a silly corperate play on Blades and Owls. So its an exercise in futility even for the money men. How much more damage can the money people inflict on our game? For these reasons and the fact that the people of Sheffield unlike other cities stand up for themselves means that this will not happen. Ever.

There is only one thing that drives football these days: MONEY. And because of that one day a merger will happen. Either that or one club will fold.

So like it or hate it a merger is going to happen. Probly not in my lifetime but it will come.

Whether fans from either side will buy in remains to be seen.

We can be fairer than than, you take one part of stuff from us and one from them

The Sheffield from their name, the United from ours
The White Stripes from their kit, the red ones from ours

Half wouldn`t support Sheffield City. And half wouldn`t support Sheffield FC.

You would see a significant portion of fans start supporting FC United of Sheffield and FC Wednesday of Barnsley South.

Lets face it the 3rd tier has been pretty enjoyable this season, think what it would be like in the 7th or 8th or 9th or 10th tier...

Sheffield Bowels - shit idea i know...

SellyOak I'd not thought about those parts either. The whole thing would mean that the highest supoorted sports entity in Sheffield would be the Sheffield Steelers.

As an exile I would have no reason to support the new team, football support is not about money it is about experiences, memories, passion and kicking a ball as a kid, pretending to be Tony Currie, in your shirt bought from Suggs! All the things money cannot buy.

Football however those days is all about money so may be the unthinkable could happen, but they would lose a whole generation or two on both halves of the city because there would be no allegiance to Sheffield Bowels, City or whatever name the marketing team decide on.

Point already made but one I will reiterate is as an exile I would have no reason to support the new team and would be left with the exciting choice of Scunny, Dull City, North Ferriby United or York as the local teams to choose from. However I could become one of those new fangled life long Manchester City fans!

To anyone without any emotional ties, it would make perfect sense. Those of us who have connections with the club would never choose to see it happen. For that reason, I dont think McCable would be on board. I think Manderic would jump at the chance though.

I do think, however, a new shared ground would be right up McCabe's street.

Another reason I know there is not a merger on the cards or even discussed is the issue of the Academy. Shirecliffe is a stones throw from Swillsborough basically up the hill from it. If there was "talk" of a merger and moving closer to it over the next 10 years then why would the pigs be setting up a better one now? They would surely wait until the merger and the new club then utilise Shirecliffe rather than spending money when its not required. Money men don't like spending money when they don't need to.
