Arsenal played the Millers in the cup a few years ago and went right through the teams taking pens. Apparently the Arse went out of order as it came round the second time and the Millers could have complained but let the result stand. So a lad at work told me today.

The penalties were like a microcosmm of the last 2 months.

Ahead, chance to go even further ahead, slowly get reeled in, then spend the last few with the pressure on us after the other team did what they needed to. And then finally cracked under the pressure...

For som reason I remembered it as Taylor hitting the post before Lowton missed...

Three defenders in the first 5... Quinn, Doyle, ohallorhallorhallorhan, hang your heads...Simmo, you should not have been in that position after saving/missing the first 3...

Was it only me that, for a second, thought Simmo had saved their keepers kick???

The game was up as soon as the cowardly decision to play 4-5-1 was taken. I said a few weeks ago (and I wasn't the only one) that Monty's return to fitness combined with the striker crisis could see Wilson take the supposed "safe" option of 5 in the middle and 1 man on his own up front with no support, 2009 redux. And so it proved. How depressing. The defensive team never wins the playoff final.

Only once out of 4 of these games have United actually tried to take the game to the oppostion (in 2003). They have not mustered a decent chance in the other 3 games. Does nobody ever learn anything.

The irony is that Montgomery did absolutely nothing, and Porter could have played with no difference being made to midfield strength. That kid in goal was nervous and we should have tested him more.

Penalties are a lottery, but losing after the opposition miss the first 3 is criminal. Thanks for nothing, Andy Taylor. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Not one quality performance in 2 years, and cost us a promotion place with what I hope is his last kick for us. A fitting epitaph. As for Montgomery, they should just pay him up and get him out of the club so Wilson can't pick him.

Last season Huddersfield dusted themselves down, kept their key men, and had another go. That isn't the Blades way, of course. A losing playoff team must be completely dismantled! We have good young players under contract but they will be sold, and you'll hear a lot of bollocks from the club and on this board about us having no choice. Biggest club in the division? That's a laugh. Watch Coventry and Portsmouth both outspend and outplay us next year.

I am sick to the back teeth of this club and its players letting us down time and time again.
Entire post is spot on.
The nausea will be made worse by a lot of crap spoken on pork radio , in the star etc about how we need to sell. They thus dig Wilson`s grave for him for next season. Deep down he is a fairly limited manager, and oh how that may show from August onwards. With three or four quality players gone, the elderly dross left will be bottom half next season.
Deadbat..brilliant posts..you misprinted McD for monty though..otherwise..100 per cent plus some.

Soz deadbat i didnt know youd already acknowledged the monty/mcD mistake. Its a major drawback of this forum that you only get 10 minutes to edit your posts. Very poor.

TBF it's better than the "free at point of use" forum for discussion of the Blades that you set up...

;)

It also has it's reasoning that if people hadn't abused wouldn't have been in place in the first place.

I will be relaxing it soon though, I'm sure you'll be glad to know.

I know what you mean - he dived the right way, got something on it - sadly not enough.

I think the fact Smithies got his penalty past Simmo by sheer power might have influenced Simmo's decision not to go for placement.

Looking at the video, is it only me who thinks that the way Simmo takes the penalty is all wrong - having his back to goal and then turning quickly and hammering it; that looks to me like a man who desperately wants to get it over with.

I suppose you could say players take pens like that so the goalies don't have time to judge from the taker's stance where the pen will be placed. That might be a fine technique for an experienced taker, but for a player taking (I assume) his first pen ever?

I thought the look on his face just said "I am really not happy about taking this." To be fair when you have saved a few pens already you probably dont think its fair that you have to score one aswell.

He's quite right as well.

Having saved 2, and seen another go waaaaay past the post of the first three they had, he has every right to expect our penalty takers to score 3 of our 5.

He did his bit. Except, unfortunately, when his bit invoved scoring himself.
