Huddersfield Town's play-off hero Alex Smithies had notes on Sheffield United’s penalty takers on a sticker on his water bottle to help his side secure promotion from npower League One.

Smithies, who saved two spot-kicks, said: ‘Every time I put my bottle down I was putting my towel over it so they didn’t realise’.

A remarkable penalty shoot-out took place at Wembley on Saturday as the game ended 0-0 after extra-time.

All 22 players had to try their luck before Huddersfield booked their place in next year’s Championship.
After some early misses, 12 penalties in a row were scored, until only the ‘keepers were left.
Smithies scored, but Steve Simonsen hit Sheffield United’s 11th penalty high over the bar.

How the fuck he could have now who our penalty takers were going to be and which way they were going to go astounds me , he dived the wrong way for most of em anyway

So these notes that he had helped him to save 2 out of 11 penalties? They must have been good notes then......

Just made that shit up for the press clearly.

All he needed to know was that he wouldn't have to move if Simmo was taking a penalty.

What's worse is that the press have made a story of it even though he only saved 2 out of 11. Had he saved the penalty that won them the shoot out I could sort of understand it but he didn't!
