CONFIRMED Rhian Brewster

It was a good penalty, but it doesn’t half wind me up when players do that little run up. Anyone other than a World Class player always seem to miss it, when they try it, so I’d rather them just not bother.

And he’s looked it when he’s got on the pitch.
Jebbo and Osula as nowhere near ready for us and are clearly behind Brewster whenever they’ve had their chance. As you say nothing wrong with that they’ve a couple of years development to do.
I'd recall Osula in January and loan out Jebbo

I felt Osula looked better within his cameos last season than Jebbo did for us. We need to get Jebbo back out on loan asap because sitting on the bench will not do his confidence any good. He needed a full season in L1 last season.

Can't deny Jebbo hasn't kicked on this year. He's been a bit of a victim of circumstances really, hasn't he? He would have been best served staying a full season with Burton and then arguably building on that with a similar move to that of Osula, to a top League One team.

Hopefully he is well grounded. All talk of moves beyond his ability can't have helped.

Unlucky that he's lost half a years loan due to our injuries and then also had to stick around this first part of the season too. It's dog eat dog though. He's had a few small chances to stake a claim but hasn't really done much and would be best, injuries permitting going on loan in January.

My concern with Brewster is he is back to showing a real lack of anticipation in games and seldom looks a threat. He really lacks composure. He's had a few efforts where he's just lashed at the ball and who was convinced he'd score the penalty? Not me for sure. Looks well short of his 23m investment. Hopefully soon enough he can replicate there 5 to 6 game spell before injury.
I agree with everything there, which is why I thought we should have left him at Burton but everything is easier with hindsight.
I'm on the other bus with Brewster, I think he's a real talent, but rather like Jebbo now, he's was thrown in 2 years before he's ready, but with fan over expectation working against his natural progression.

Quite apart from what any of us think, and no-one is going to change anyone's mind, it is quite interesting that Hecky seems reluctant to start him, and I don't think that's because he thinks he'd better as an impact sub.

You sure ?

Not 100%, I'm pretty sure both him and McBurnie missed against Southampton and Burnley in the cups and I've got a feeling brewster has missed another ... although I might be thinking of one brewster missed for Liverpool to lose them the community shield

Brewster has only taken 2 penalties for us. Southampton and Blackpool.

McBurnie missed in both games you mention above.

Yes you're right, i think it may have been an England under 21 game brewster missed in ... 🤔

It was a good penalty
You can't say it was a good penalty if he misses the target. That's like saying that a Grand Prix driver who skids off the track on the last lap had a good race.

A penalty should primarily be hit hard and on target. If you can place it in a corner, that's a bonus. If it misses the goal, even by a couple of inches, it's a crap penalty.

You can score a bad penalty though, can you not? Scuff it and it still goes in, or the keeper just messes it up?

It was about 1cm from actually going in.

Its not really though is it ?

Yep. I'd say well over half of 'bad' penalties that are on target go in. This includes pens that are straight down the middle. The keeper dives, the ball hits the back of the net, the commentor says 'cool as a cucumber' or some such rubbish. A lot of Billy's penalties aren't 'good' pens, but they are hit hard and on target, so they tend to go in.

You've got to look at the odds. What are the chances of a penalty that's aimed at the top right hand corner hitting the woodwork or missing the target? What are the odds of a penalty being saved that's hit hard into an area that won't ever hit the woodwork or go wide?

Very talented player, who's improving, working hard. Glory days will come.

Unfortunate penalty miss, I hope he takes the next (but it goes in!).

Billy Sharp has said multiple times how great a finisher Brewster is.

According to Transfermarkt he's scored 6 and now missed 3.

This doesn't include shootouts. He missed for Liverpool in the Charity Shield the other year. He also missed for us against Southampton in the Cup.

So, unless he's scored in other shoot outs then that makes 6 scored and 5 missed.

Hardly a ringing endorsement.

Norwood, who is off them, scored 7 an missed 2 in open play and missed against Hull and Forest in a shoot out. Not including any other shootouts at other clubs.

Neither ideal. Who's next?

I don’t think he’ll come good for us, but I thought it was a good penalty (daft run up aside). Is this allowed?

You can think what you like, of course.

Just out of interest, do you think he should take the next penalty?

My tuppenth' is that Brewster hit the penalty too well: anything off the pace on the ball and it would have gone in off the post rather than bouncing back along the line. Fine margins and all that

Norwood's penalty technique seems to have been shot by the 2 minute wait at the City Ground. I wrote about that after the Millwall game.

For me, the United penalty taker preference list is:

Berge
Osborn
Ndiaye (based on a very small sample!)
Sharp
Norwood
Brewster
Fleck (although he hasn't taken one for 10 years)

Would probably be OK
Doyle
McAtee
Khadra (missed his only one against us last season)

Lucky dip
Basham
Egan
RND
Baldock

Probably should steer clear
McBurnie (scored 3 of 8 in professional football)

He should now be behind Jebbison in the pecking order for game time, so it shouldn’t be a question.

Brewster has been the biggest flop with McBurnie just behind.
McBurnie is looking better but I do think that if sold the pair for a million each we could get a better striker for 2 million and then use the youth.
