Long may this continue

What gets me is how he's suddenly found his touch again, not just fitness

I image it’s easier to control a ball when you’re not blowing out your arse after 15 minutes.

Being physically and mentally fit and prepared has to go along way in your technique and how your able to perform. Sounds like mcburnie has been trying to get back to basics and taking care of himself and hopefully he (and we) reap the rewards.

Credit to the Yorkshire Mourinho for believing in him, I certainly didn't. Nice little hug between them at the end as well. UTB

“Even though there’s a possibility he may be coming good I can’t bring myself to hope it’s true”

Copy and paste you United player haters!

He looked shagged when he came off. Still not fully fit?

He’s now starting to look like a £20m striker. Long May it continue.

I'd say for the first period since being with us, he is starting to look like a proper handful. He looks stronger and definitely more determined. Nobody hates McB - everyone just wanted him to fire up. He's been atrocious - last 3 games he's delivered- that's what we want - keep going and net 20 - again that's what we want.
The crowd proper got behind him last night - it was good for him it was good for us.

He’s doing well and I’m pleased for him but he has scored 2 goals in 44 league games. He cost £20 million. That is an appalling record by any standard.
Let’s hope he keeps it going.

Over his career, Billy has scored once every 2. and a half games. Even if Oli Mac matched that return, for the rest of the season, he'd only have stats of 17 in 83. Stats can be misleading....

Not really as he would have 17 league goals this season which would be brilliant.

Precisely. Context is key.

I’m happy to forget the past 2 seasons if he does well this season, but im simply stating how poor he has been for so long.
In short I want what all blades want, a goal scoring Oli Mac. Now don’t get me started on Brewster….

All I can say is 'he's getting there'!
His game intensity is much improved, albeit a few lapses against Luton, but last night he took his goal well, getting into the box quickly which is something I've been critical of him not doing and his overall play was much better.
Looking knackered at the end was a sign of him putting in a proper shift!
Keep it up McBurnie 👍

Great to see McBurnie hitting form, not his biggest fan but always think back to his goal at Brighton, strength, pace and clinical finish.20 goals for him this campaign is a reality and with Ndayie they look a real handful!

There’s always a post like this.

McBurnie turned in dross for years and was rightly criticised. He has since said so himself.

He is now playing well and is rightly reaping the plaudits.

It’s possible to have done both as a fan and not be unreasonable.

Wrong he was very good in the first season in the prem , he was joint top scorer when asked to play as John parkin a role he had never played in his life

Then for multiple reasons such as injuries / never getting full fitness / getting covid / only playing 10 minute subsitute appearances when we are defending he has looked poor which he has

Its crazy that a player looks completely different when been fully fit and getting a run in the team

I would say the exact same about Brewster aswell

Talk to me when he’s posting Billy type stats season on season

Well sharp got 11 in 39 apps last year

From open play of course as penalties dont count

So mcburnie is 2 from 2 so he is doing better than sharp by my statistical analysis

One swallow doesn't make a summer but all he can do is continue to improve and to his credit, he's come back and scored two goals when he looked like a lost cause.

He just needs to carry on as he's doing and if he can reach double figures come the end of the season, he might earn himself a new deal. If he reverts back to type, that could be it for him and he'll end up spending the rest of his career faffing about in League One wondering what might have been.

This!!!

Glad he’s finally started scoring but he has a long way to go before we start to see a decent return on the clubs financial outlay on him.

Hopefully we’ll see a similar thread at the end of the season when he’s banged in over 20 goals and we’ve been promoted… I’ll more than happily go back on my previous criticisms of him.

As pleased as I am that he is scoring. I still think he's just a crap footballer. I thought he was crap prior to coming to United and nothing I've seen since has really raised the bar for me.

He may well have/and may get 20 goals a season and help us as a team, but his technique looks amateurish a lot of the time to me.

He's good as a target man, like his goal tonight, cross in, big man in box to head in, simple in a way as it doesn't involve him actually playing much football.
What a load of absolute rubbish. If you’ve nothing sensible to say either shut up or join the shoutbox on match days.

You do realise that the criticism he gets is because of his lack of goals! I'm one of his critics but just because he's scored two in two doesn't give him godlike status yes i"ll admit he looks more lean & fitter this season and it looks like it's starting to pay off. While ever he's scoring goals the critics will go it's just part of football.

I ate humble pie on Sharp when he returned and I will be happy to eat it with regards to McBurnie if he fires us to promotion.

Cynical hat on, he is now in his final year of his contract and he could be playing for a move. I hope that isn't the case and it really has been bad off the field decisions, bad injuries and illness that is why he's been off the boil for a while.

14 in 39… as I do count penalties as they count as goals

His overall career statistics are much much better also.
Surprisingly their stats at Championship level are pretty even, with McBurnie just edging it (admittedly from a much smaller sample size):
  • Sharp averages a goal every 198 minutes (128 goals from 25,373 minutes)
  • McBurnie averages a goal every 185 minutes (33 goals from 6,109 minutes)

Unless I’m wrong …

Billy averages a goal every 2.4 games

Mcburnie averages a goal every 3.9 games

Across their careers…

However we could argue statistics all night …

For me Mcburnie has a lot to do consistently before he’s anywhere near the level of King Billy.

However, he has time on his side and I hope he does

We’ve already seen a decent return on the club’s financial outlay.

Not sure about that.....I'd say he's currently looking like a £10 mil to £15 million striker.
He's no where near the form he was showing when he was at Swansea but give him credit....he's heading the right direction.

Might seem simplistic but it looks like he's worked really hard in the gym so he's now 10% stronger and fitter compared to last season.
Combined with now showing 100% effort instead of usual 90% effort, it's raised his level and he's now looking a good striker at Championship level.

Jury is still out obviously, its only 2 games.....he needs to show the same improvement over a full season.
Good to see and helps relief the weakest area of our squad (the striker options).
We just need Sharp to get match fit and Brewster to score and find some confidence then we'll be firing on all cylinders.
