Just looking at the respective run ins for us and the dark side. Recent weeks on P or G there's been some grunts from over there to the tune that they will catch us because we have the harder run in. Looking at things today, I'm not sure that is actually the case. They have Colchester next who need a win to keep slim play off place chance alive followed by Carlisle and Brentford who will still be in with a shout of play offs when they play them. Then they round it off with Wycombe who may be needing 3 points to stay up still.

Meanwhile we have Orient next who have enough of a cushion that it's not vital for them to win, MK Dons which looked like a banana skin, but they also have a wee cushion, Stevenage will hopefully drop points before we play them which should make it meaningless for them,a nd then Exeter = party.

Ever the optmist. Barca

Carlisle will test Wednesday...more than Oldham/Preston/Bury/Orient, that's for sure. I had them to drop points at Colchester on Saturday but I'm not sure now.

On Owlstalk they were saying that Orient would be a difficult game for us as they will put 10 men behind the ball and play for a point. I think that is right. However, as none of the teams coming to the Lane this season have managed to succeed with that strategy, I am confident we will win comfortably.

As for the other 3 fixtures, if MKD win at Scunthorpe on Saturday, they will have pretty much secured their play off place; Stevanage are currently 6 points of the play offs and before they play us have Yeovil, Carlisle and Brentford - I fully expect them to be out of it with 2 games left; and barring a miracle of biblical proportions Exeter will be down by the time we play them.

As for Wednesday, Colchester look to be pretty much out of the play off contention, but, as you say, Brentford and Carlisle will be desperately scrapping for points when SWFC play them.

I would rather have our fixtures than theirs.

For me, Brentford away is their banana skin. Later that day, we play Stevenage - our own sternest test - on the telly. It could be promotion at the end of that match, should we take the points. That prospect has be bricking it.

at this stage of the season you need to play teams with nothing to play for.. you don't want to be playing Brentford and Carlisle right now.. it's funny the pigs are all full of they think our run in is more difficult but i guarantee you that when we beat them the 'same' pigs will be on going on about 'they'd have caught up but our run in was 'easier' .. you watch

It can work the other way though if a team has nothing to play for as there is no pressure and they can go out and play freely. They may also play at a higher tempo to ensure contracts for next season or put themselves in the "shop window". One thing is for sure, there's a lot of pressure on both us and the Wendy and either side is likely to make a stupid mistake.

It might not matter who the pigs have to play, after last night I can't see us slipping up against Orient, MK, Stevenage or Exeter albeit we continue playing as we are. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how many games the pigs win, if we win 3 and draw 1 we go up - even if the pigs win all their games.

On that basis it's best to be playing a team heading for the play offs. They can't relax, they won't want injuries and one or two players will be rested.

MKD may be the easiest game we have :-)

In the final game of the 1993-4 season I seem to remember that we played a team that had nothing to play for. We lost and got relegated.

I suspect that both sides will have a "bad" result somewhere along the way in he next 3 games. The question is will our bad result be better or worse than theirs, and whose will come first.

I still think he who blinks first loses...

The blink is imminent. It will be accompanied by grunts and squeals.

Threat Over Wednesday, In Essex.

But that team had several players playing to get in their side for the FA Cup Final the following week

Professional footballers play to win. They enjoy upsetting the applecarts of other clubs, even if they themselves have nothing to play for. I think it's a false premise to assess fixtures solely by reference to what the respective teams have to play for.

I would be far from confident of a win if we were going to Colchester on Saturday. I predict The Pigs will draw at best.

Colchester aren't on the greatest form but have drawn a lot recently. As we found out it's not the easiest place to go. Crossing my fingers for this one

Maybe with one or two, but it's also just as likely that most of their players were likely to start in the cup final and so might be anxious to avoid injury.

If you offered me a pigs draw down at Colchester this weekend I would rip your arm off!

Pinchy, you have that spot on, not only pro footballers either. At any level, pro, semi pro, local leagues, 5 a side, kickabout in the park, everybody wants to win, no matter what!
I hated losing with a passion during my long playing career, spoilt many a weekend much to the chagrin of my beloved:) (mind you, I have to say, losing didn't happen too often;))

Seen a different side to you this past few days Mr P! Now you've not got the spectre of Sir Nick on your radar, you're giving rein to the full repotoire of your talents!;)

Hope you are right about Colchester BTW, I think it will happen at Brentford more likely....

I bet, for once, you're all delighted to hear me say "I told you so"! :)
