He just doesn't say whether he's willing to accept a pay cut to do so. Cheerio Steve!

:)

Sheffield United goalkeeper Steve Simonsen would like to stay at Bramall Lane beyond the end of his current deal, which expires in the summer.
The 33-year-old joined the Blades in July 2010 and has made 92 appearances.
He told BBC Radio Sheffield: "Even though last year was a disappointment I've really enjoyed my time here.
"I'd like to stay because I've enjoyed working alongside the manager and the staff that he's brought in and I'd like to continue those relationships."
The former Everton and Stoke custodian turned 33 on Tuesday and acknowledges that he is having to adapt his game as time goes by.
Simonsen has been a near ever-present for the Blades this season, having made 45 appearances.
"There's always things you need to look at changing as you get older, like maybe doing a bit less training or choosing your days off," he added.
"You know yourself what you need to do to keep going, at the moment I've got that balance spot on and I'm feeling good."

He still continues to make bad errors at this level, especially earlier on in the season. I doubt he'd be good enough in the Championship, providing we go up.

Oh come on, the guy works as part of one of the best back 4's in the division and you still won't give him credit. He did have a crisis of confidence earlier in the season but he has been vastly improved of late.

As for last season, it was shooting practice so I would not expect his confidence to be high. Better manager, better back 4 and more confidence tells me I wouldn't mind him sticking around.

He's half decent but in all honesty nothing more. We don't now for sure, but it's highy likely (based on the period we signed him) that he's extremely highly paid. He's possibly worth keeping on, but an enormous pay cut will be in order - I doubt he'll accept it.

Yes he does work as part of one of the best back 4's and he does make some good saves, which I credit him for. However, there are times when he fails to command his 6 yard area and won't come out and collect crosses - which cost us points e.g. Tranmere at home the other week. These are basic mistakes which he continues to make and as a professional goalkeeper it isn't good enough.

he has cost us points this season, thats without doubt.
and i feel there are better keepers out there that would play for us IF we get promoted.

A decent keeper at best, trouble is over the years we have been spoilt having some terrific keepers. Kelly and Tracey spring to mind and to a certain extent Kenny if he hadn't been such a dumb arse. All in all I think we could do as well if not better for less wages.

If we go up I think Ikeme the guy we had on loan from Wolves for a few games and is on loan at Donny looked a good keeper if wages/transfer/loan could be agreed. If we dont go up Howard may be given a chance in the 1st team

If you are reading this Simmo, everyone loves you really and wishes for you to continue in your current form, so keep your chin up ;)

Oh, oh, ohhh he's magic, you know....

I think we should offer him another year if we go up and give him a chance.

If you were being paid "£750,000 per year", woud you be reading this?

Hes done well this season.

However i think Marshall will be our number 1 next season unless Simmo accepts a huge paycut.

We signed him in the summer of 2010, when we were certainly not throwing money around like we were in 2007 and 2008. The parachute payments had ended in 2009 and we were now shopping in Lidl rather than Waitrose (our other summer signings in 2010 were Bogdanovic, Ertl, Kozluk and Britton).

He will be on no more than averagish championship wages.

He's had an absolute mare, the nadir being at Orient. He's worked hard since then and improved both concentration and communication with his defence. Whilst looking for better players should always be at the forefront of our plans, it's diificult to see who we could get better than Simmo for the reduced monies we will be offering. Unless we can, then we keep and look to develop the other kid.

I think Britton was on a lot of money. Bear in mind we exceeded his offer from Swansea at a time they were buying Scott Sinclair.

Also, our financial plight has worsened since those heady Championship days...

I'd sooner play a younger, greener keeper who could improve than watch Simmo in the Championship again. He's been good since being dropped, but he's at an age where his market value can only really fall.

I don't think anyone in summer 2010, even post parachute payments, would have been remotely surprised that we could offer more in wages than Swansea - I suspect they were paying a bit less than the second tier average and us a bit (but not hugely) more.

How things change in a year....

I think the signing of Mark Howard effectively sent a message to Simmo saying, if you want to stay, it'll be on a vastly reduced contract. If not, we've got a competent keeper for next season whichever division we play in. I'm sure the club have done their homework on Howard and are happy he fits the bill.... and he knows the score too.
However, who knows what may transpire should we go up?

Simonsen is only 33 - look at Van der Sar, Friedel, James or Schwarzer to see how long keepers can play on for.

For what it's worth, I think he'll stay if terms can be agreed. I don't agree with Darren; I think he will be on higher than average wages for the Championship as we were theoretically aiming for promotion that season. Don't forget that while we didn't make any major signings we agreed new deals with Montgomery, Quinn and Cresswell which are rumoured to be costing the club somewhere around £40,000 per week between them.

I'm sure I've read rumours on here that Simonsen is on £16,000 per week which might not be accurate but even if it's out by 50% he's still going to be on 5 figures per week which is unsustainable.

The football league is going to undergo a bit of a transformation in terms of wages over the next couple of years as a critical mass of clubs is going to have to reduce their wage bills.

While I don't actually think Simmo has done too badly really, but I don't think he should be the solution we are looking to going forward.
He is expensive, plus we have 2 young a promising keepers coming through.

The skill is for Wilson to identify how far away is Long, and how many seasons does he need on loan before he is of a standard to hold his own at Championship level. If this time period is to be 2 or more seasons, then he needs to look at alternatives, or if Long is only a season away then maybe its worth keeping Simmo if he can agree to seriously reduced terms.

Decisions like is where managers earn their corn for a club looking to develop through the academy and its an easy one to get wrong. Its also potentially incredibly expensive to get it wrong

Well it's all based on rumour isn't it, but given our financial plight in the summer of 2100, I would be very surprised if the players you mentioned were on anything like the sums you mention.

The average championship wage in 2009-10 was £4059 per week. Even if we were paying double that that's a long way off £16,000 a week

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ier-League-wages-FIVE-times-Championship.html

Looking at the tables there what is interesting is how much money there is at the top of the game and how little at the bottom. I earn more than the average 4th division player!

Couple of things - I think the club see Mark Howard as the longer term replacement for Simmo next season and they've never been comfy with Simmo choosing not to uproot from Merseyside to be nearer Bramall Lane, which will have a bearing on a new contract (or not).

That table only describes the averages: I'd guess they used the whole squads to calculate that. I don't know who the best paid 'keeper in the Premier League was in 09/10 but I'd not be surprised if they were on £80k plus per week.

We had one of the biggest wage bills in the Championship in 2009/10 and 2010/11 and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that we are paying out the numbers I've mentioned above.

Indeed, the wage bill last season was around £14m (I think) which would work out at £7k per week on average for a 40 player squad. Throw in the spectrum within the squad and that would seem to back up my argument that Simonsen et al are paid far more than the average player in the Championship.

If I remember correctly the wage bill includes everyone down from the Chief Exceutive to the players to the tea lady, which would bring the players' average down

Bear in mind as well that the parachute payment receiving teams will skew the average upwards as they will be receiving far more than the average.

In any event, this is all supposition with few facts to go on. My hunch though is that fans routinely over estimate United players' wages.

Bloody Hell! Are we still going to be in such a mess in 88 years time?
How depressing is that?

Judging by the most recent accounts (still a huge wagebill) I'd be suprised if we weren't still paying well over championship money in 2010. Especially for premiership (albeit reserve) players.

True, but it also does at all the other championship clubs that we had far higher wagebills than.
