So 1 game in. Is Fleck this seasons McBurnie? Who will the biggest waste of space when McBurnie is fit? Will Stevens/Norwood be a challengers? Tune in Saturday evening for the next instalment

It was only a few seasons ago when Fleck was one of the best British midfielders in the Premier League.

I wouldn’t write him off just yet.

Was that the time before we had corona pandemic?

Thing is though with Fleck, it's 1 good game in 10 whereas before he'd be at least a 7/10 every single game.

Ever since the post Covid return he's not looked the same, Enda too.
I don't think it's just post covid, I think its post that 'scary incident' at Reading too. I was there and was just relieved he hadnt died at the time. That must have taken a lot out of him physically but also mentally.

They’re different players but Fleck and Berge to me are quite similar in that they can often appear totally lackadaisical in possession but then sometimes flick a switch, effectively realise what good players they are, and suddenly turn it on and skip past a few challenges and set something up. In the Premier League and on our way up Fleck seemed to be able to regularly hit the switch but he’s become less and less able to. Berge has been able to bring it more of late. But both are so inconsistent with it and it’s often either brilliant or shit. And because we know what they’re capable of they can be such frustrating players. Wilder was right with the John and Jimmy Fleck. With Berge it’s Sander and Simon.

In my eyes he's just a a quality player that is past his best. Hero always though.
Agree - but good teams know when to (and how to) move on players who are past their best. The first thing is not playing them every game. We are still struggling to ship players out - maybe that’s the other (down)side of the double edge sword when Wilder was dishing out contract extensions (and which fan didn’t want us to do that at the time?)
The issue clearly comes down to a lack of money to effectively refresh the squad - I just hope that there is a plan to move a lot of these players on and we will see it in next few weeks - otherwise it’s going to be a long tough season if last nights performance is typical of slow football lacking any creativity whatsoever

We’re just slow starters , takes Flecky 3-5 matches to get going be reight .
I was as pissed off as everyone but if we win sat everyone will on board !

Stevens, Fleck and Norwood all frees next summer.

Fleck arrives tubby & slow every August which is unprofessional - to pick him in his current state is daft.

It's taking Flecky about a season to get going. Something isn't right with him or he is done at this level.

The whole midfield needs a reshuffle. As stated above Fleck has been 1 good game every 10 games for two and a half seasons. Norwood is good one game, invisible the next where he coincidentally cheaply loses possession when he gets it in these games. Sadly Berge doesn't do enough to get himself into matches and relies too much on service from Norwood unless Baldock passes backwards when he should have crossed the ball, so he tends to play well when Norwood plays well.

The sad reality is that even if we do sign McAtee then Hecky is likely to still keep playing Norwood and Berge with Doyle, Khadra and McAtee all fighting for the other shirt. Can anyone seriously see Hecky dropping Norwood, because I can't? He has his favourite players who get picked every game no matter how crap they've performed in matches.

He's too nice as a manager when he needs to having a go at players and having the balls to be a nasty bastard when it's needed. As much as I hate comparing him to Wilder, Wilder wasn't afraid of bollocking the team or players publicly or privately and it saw an upturn in performances. Hecky's post match interview are always positive. He tried to claim that our game plan was working last night, which is worrying as we didn't seem to have one. Moaning about lack of shots falls on him. He picked the players and he told them how to play and didn't change it when it wasn't working. He just made subs and stuck with the same approach.

Unless he grows a pair of balls and is prepared to drop players then his limitations as a manager are going to be found out. Development wise and coaching players he's good, but he's tactically naive and one dimensional on match days. It might only be one match but we saw way too many of these wretched performances under him last season, even when we won.
I’m a big fan of Hecky, but I have to agree with most of what you have said about him having favourites like Norwood and Fleck.
Bringing quality loan players puts the inevitable off for a year, but also holds back the few talented players with potential, like Orblaster and Coulibally.
It’s a pity, because McAtee plays with the exuberance and enjoyment of youth. I know Norwood has his fans but when senior players loose form, it’s time to move on.
A more ruthless manager could get automatic promotion with this team.

Your basing that on watching them once a week or in some players cases never ( just what you read on here )
You don’t see them and work with them everyday thats the difference you pick your team based on what you see hear over the week
So for all we know JF may be ripping it up in training
Mind I’m no Hecky fan

One problem with that buddy it means fuck all how well they do in training it's what they do on match day that really matters. If they continually fail to produce in games forget what they do in training don't pick them and give somebody else a go, simple.

Interesting response. No one knows how players perform regularly in training. My name is not McAll or Lester. Training performance is one thing, but live games are different and they are all I’ve got to go on.
I pick teams based on performances in a match, over a longer period of time. :)

You don’t though. You pick nothing. You don’t select the team, nor do I and neither of us gets the sack when it goes tits up. All we see is the pit head, not the pit but we think we know about mining.

I was answering a post that accused me of minimal knowledge, based on me not seeing how players did in training. That post was limited but correct. So is yours. :)

Mentally it can. I've had seizures and mine have always been random. He is peak fitness and always pushing himself. When he's doing that and has a seizure, personally speaking, the brakes go on a bit. A trigger for me seemed to be tiredness. So I was always maximising sleep for example. He can't exactly maximise slacking off can he? So if this is a mental thing, he needs dropping until it is sorted. He's no good to us like that. And I have every single sympathy with the man.
