Issue with modern football is that the top sides hoovering up anyone with a little bit of potential on the off chance they make it, is a compelling strategy

They know they can spend the equivalent of pocket change buying up anyone that looks remotely decent and probably make that back on loan fees down the road. While everyone from the championship down can’t really turn down a chunk of change

And yet when you look at the England side many of those players didn’t take that route and instead made their way up in the game incrementally normally coming through lower down before moving to a mid table prem side and finally to the top of the game in their prime.

Ramsdale, Maguire, Stones, Walker, Shaw, Bellingham, Chillwell, Phillips, Ward-Prowse, Grealish none of those came through the quote unquote elite academies.

I think this is a real issue.

One solution to this would be for the FA to create a rule where any player 21+ can move on a free (or modest compensation) if they haven't yet seen substantial first team football with their club. Transfer fees are compensation, if you are not playing a player I don't see any reason why you should be due compensation. We need to move away from considering players as 'assets', its gross.

There’s nothing to see here. PL clubs will have dossiers on all young players. We’ve had loads who’ve had scouts but nothings come to fruition.

Yeah, if he’s good enough then maybe.

Maguire could’ve gone to Man U at 19 but didn’t.

Liverpool still kept tabs on Flynn

Nicky Law had Spurs scouts.

Would he count because of him coming through an academy in England? Not sure of the rules but thought he would still count as “homegrown “.

He will count towards homegrown quotas where they apply, but that's not related to international eligibility.

Homegrown: been registered with any FA affiliated club for at least 3 years before 21st birthday.

International: he becomes eligible for UK citizenship roughly this time next year, via naturalisation (5 years). If he wants to, he can then apply and if successful he could, in theory, declare for England or any of the Home Nations. There used to be an informal agreement to ignore these players but it isn't always followed.

I understand both his parents are Nigerian, so he has that option already. I'm sure one of Daniel Jebbison's parents is English, as he's already playing for the England youth teams.

And following Brexit, this is even more important. Previously the cat one academies would be looking abroad to bring in 16-18 year olds and that cant happen in Europe anymore. As a result there is an even bigger premium on young British talent.

Southampton paid £1m for two Spurs 16 year olds the other day

I think Jebbo’s mum is English and his dad Jamaican and he was born in Canada so got lots of options

If a business pays several million for a player then the latter must be an asset

Aye - but I think @EastBayBlade’s point is that if the big clubs realise they won’t get a good return on that asset (unless they actually use the player themselves) then they won’t pay millions for these youngsters in the first place… unless they legitimately think they are going to play for them. It’s a good idea imo.

Agree with your general point though - players are assets/investments. Would just be nice to stamp out the asset hoarding of the big clubs that fucks up many a youngsters career/life.

An asset created through regulation (player registration). A normal business wouldn't attribute an financial asset to an employee, even if they may be due compensation if contracts are broken and they moved to a rival business.

Its controversial, but if I was in charge of football in England I would do away with transfer fees all together, have a maximum contract term of 2 years for all players , have limits on playing squad size (25 including youth players), have a 1m salary limit (for the PL) on players who play less than 500 minutes in a season. The best players end up at the best clubs anyway, it would be a lot better if we just removed all the friction in the system and created incentives for players to seek out playing time.

Scrap the loan system, players would develop their skills at their parent club and move up or down the pyramid according to their skill, clubs would only buy them if they were going to use them.

It would also stop clubs being promoted or relegated due to influencing loans that they could never afford.

The loan system is important. Plenty of players make careers in the game thanks to it.

Surely you weren’t complaining when we loaned the likes of Henderson and Gibbs-White?

That would see smaller sides essentially become feeder clubs to individual bigger clubs

I enjoyed both players, but we could never afford them and like everyone else we use and loan players. I'd just like to stop the likes of Chelsea hoovering up all the young talent when you know they are just going to loan them out. You can understand any player agreeing to move when they are offered the money top clubs can offer, likewise you can understand why players move for the money, it's a short career that can end in any game.
It's just frustrating seeing these players go without them getting time at the parent club, it'll never change, too much money involved.
