Not really. At the time, Bristol signing Massengo was a major coup. Was regarded as one of the best young talents around the French leagues & thought to be a bit of a shoe in for the French national team in the future. £8 mill was a bit of a steal!

His current contract apparently expires at the end of this season & Bristol are skint. Could well be available at a bargain price!

Thought I'd bring this one back to the surface. As our squad has no real "defensive midfielders" he'd be a great addition to the squad, relatively cheaply in the summer. Aged 18/19 everyone thought he'd be a Premier League player for sure, but it's not worked out at Bristol City and now they're refusing to play him since October as he won't sign a new contract.

He's still only 21. "Very good player on his day" a Bristol City fan tells me.

Never understood the problem with a player running there contract down. Why should a player sign something if they don't want to? It seems to crop up more publicly now players basically being blackmailed that if they don't sign they won't get game time, potentially damaging their career. All I think a player should be obliged to do is try their best whilst contracted.

Suspect he may want to return to France, but at 21 years old and on a free (subject to a tribunal fee) could be a decent value signing in an area where we need numbers.

It seems he's only made 9 appearances since joining Auxerre on loan in January.

He's also been able to speak to overseas (ie French) clubs since January so it does say something that he's not already signed up. Maybe it says the compensation is putting clubs off?

He seems to be on the radar of Palace and Leicester fans.

It feels like a risk. I'd rather us go and do what Bristol City did and potentially unearth someone for 8m than roll the dice for, say, 4m on someone who's already been unearthed once.

If he's £4 million (compensation) as Panini has guessed, that's cheap for a desperately needed midfield body that might well make the grade in the Prem with Hecky's guidance.

Still very young, but clearly had the ability for them to fork out what they did….crazy as it was and a huge gamble that has clearly backfired for them.

But get him in here, bit of compo later down the line and a lad trying to forge a career as a premier league player might just be a coup that sees him flourish.

Really hope that it is these types of scenario and player we are all over!!

Not sold on young players who have had questionable attitude issues / fallouts with managers early on in their careeer. See James Wilson and in extreme cases Ravel Morrison, Jose Baxter etc.
