Uefa Women's Euro 2022 at Bramall Lane

Just picked up on the pitch being made bigger. I thought it looked better on TV. My only gripe about Bramall Lane (apart from the poles on the Kop) is that it looks like there's too much space between the goals and stands. Love it when the stands are as close as possible

I wonder why the club see a benefit of going back to it being smaller once the tournament is over? Appreciate each club has a set of dimensions to stick between.

Not sure if you have noticed but to get the extra 4m in length they have lost a fair few seats at the bottom of the kop hence its going back to 101m in length. width is the standard 68m.

I think the smaller pitch argument, for me anyway, is that it would bring the players closer together, there'd be the increased physicality which I think is currently lacking.
Making the pitches smaller doesn't make the women faster so I don't get that argument. However the goalkeepers are the most obvious weak point of it all and they could probably do with some help. Then again it's not like games are regularly 5 3 or daft scores like that all the time

It would be positive if the big clubs in men’s football didn’t dominate the women’s game. If the finances could be made more equal in the women’s game, I can imagine situations where teams outside the big 6 could win leagues, cups, etc., and attract big crowds. I have more or less given up on United (men) winning the Cup or PL, but I think the potential support for United (women) challenging for national or international honours would be considerable. Do Man City fans really want another event where they have to drag themselves down to Wembley yet again? And just imagine how many Wednesday would take🤣
But the domination is 'organic' isn't it? Men's football dominates because it's more popular, more people want to pay to watch it. The finances aren't equal because the men's game attracts more sponsorship, more coverage etc. If the demand for the women’s game was as high there wouldn't be a discrepancy, but there isn't at the moment. My posts on this are just some ideas to try to make it more popular and to close the gap. Personally I don't think just saying 'everything should stay the same and we should just hope the women’s game becomes more popular or redistribute more money from the men's game' is the solution. It wouldn't be sustainable. The women’s game has been around for some time now, in the professional format, and I'm not sure how far it's progressed in closing the gap.

I was not suggesting that money should be re-distributed from the men’s to the women’s game. I merely wonder aloud whether the women’s game would benefit from a more even distribution of money across the women’s game. In the men’s game the distribution of money favours the big clubs, making it almost impossible now for clubs to grow organically. You are either one of the big 6, find a billionaire owner (like Newcastle), or the highest aspiration is to get into the top half of the PL, at all costs avoid relegation, and that is it. Never win a trophy, never get to a Cup Final, never qualify for Europe. The predictability becomes tedious. Perhaps the women’s game would build up a wider fan-base by having a more even distribution of money. Idle thoughts, nothing more.

I guess in an ideal world, but ultimately money talks and if the more 'popular' clubs are attracting more investment are they likely to be up for distributing it across the rest of the less popular clubs? I'd suggest that idea might struggle to get off the ground.

Watching the first 10 minutes of Sweden Belgium (for instance), it seems crackers to look at this and think: Hmm, how can we turn this into the same WWE shitshow 💩 that the men's game often is.

Well we don’t have Ollie Burke anymore, who would have appreciated the extra space to try and bring the ball under control.

WSL last season. It looks a little one-sided and high-scoring but, for instance the Spurs scores all seem pretty normal, home and away. Seems to make sense to let the game develop.

For a (not entirely random) comparison this is the 58-59 Division 1 Season. (Not random because I was looking for the Spurs 10 Everton 4 game.) Lots of 5s and 6s in amongst that lot.

I think it's a very good comparison. The women's game seems to be where men's football used to be. Slower, more skillful. Lots of time on the ball. The lack of physicality benefits attackers greatly.

It's a different game to watch. Probably better on the eye, in general. More likely to be entertaining but more likely one-sided.

Been looking every day since the start of the week to get a ticket for this match tonight and the UEFA portal has been saying there was none available. There's loads of empty seats

I reckon it should be ten female outfield players and a male goalkeeper. If teams are chasing the game, they could encourage their goalie to come forward and play in an attacking role. It would be reight exciting.

Showers would be ppv afterwards wouldn't they

Less than 10,000 there.
I was at the match last night.

I think the stadium holds about 12500. It looked like it was reduced capacity because there were lots of TV platforms, VIP areas etc. They said the attendance was about 9500. I wonder if that was the seats sold, rather than the people there.

So, something like 12500 capacity
9500 tickets sold ie "sold out" - this is then given as the "attendance".
7000 or 8000 actually bodies there?

Similarly for the "record attendance" Netherlands Switzerland match at the Lane there were patches of empty seats all over the ground.

If it's the same for Tuesday ie "sold out" with 2 000 (or 3 000?) empty seats and extremely high demand, then someone somewhere might kick up a fuss.

They gave the attendance as 10k on the BBC, that is definitely seats sold rather than people that turned up, there was absolutely loads of empty seats. Pissed off as I wanted to go but couldn't get a ticket. I'm expecting the same for the game on Tuesday.

I used to be in the make the nets smaller, pitches smaller etc camp but I've changed my mind.

One comparison is that women play tennis on the same court as the men. It's the same but different.

I'm not sure the women should be forced to play the same game as the men by compensating for physical differences. Just let the game with its extra time and space develop in its own way.

Same, but different.
The nets in volleyball are at a different height, though. Which I think is a better comparison.

Only Germany v France showing as available so I'm guessing all the ones for England v Sweden have gone already.

Funny how it keeps selling out yet they find more tickets over and over. It'll end up being about 25k

No tickets available on the portal, only the Germany game. Will be a little annoyed if there's empty seats on tv tomorrow
However, attendance quoted is for actual tickets sold rather than number passing through the turnstiles/UEFA pre scanning to validate admission.
But, will be interesting to see when the cameras pan round the stadium.
Hopefully someone on here may suddenly offer ticket (s) but then luck of the draw if you are online and able to obtain.
