ooh if we'd have.. and we should have.. in fact if we'd have won every game we'd have 108 points by now and be promoted.. if my mother hadn't fancied it that day i wouldn't have been born 9 months later
all these games in hand mean nothing until they are points in the bag..
did you really think we would win every game in hand?? that's not because we are sheffield united.. that is because teams never do.. in the 70's leeds needed four points to win the league .. they were full of it 'cos they had 'two games in hand'. they lost against wolves. this is football. this is why it is so interesting.. these result are not a given
get over the mad oldham result everyone.. and that includes you DC :D

move on now everybody.. if we want to get promoted we have to lose this 'always us' attitude.. UTB

March has been far from a good month so far.

I said to a Boro fan mate before the derby that by the end of March we'd either be out of sight or dragged back into the play off battle. Its proving to be the latter.

We've blown our lead, but we're still in the driving seat. Charlton have no pressure on them now and I suppose the only side showing consistent form has been the pigs. But then again they had to, just like we did when we slipped out of 2nd, we had to chase again.

We start getting a bit of breathing space between games again from next Tuesday onwards, but Notts County will be a tough one though as they're hitting form and Chesterfield and Tranmere games won't be easy.

Had a bit of bad luck in the last few weeks, luck that in the case of Oldham couldn't be avoided really (losing the back four in 24 hrs)

Thankfully Collins will be back for Sat and perhaps Macca can start to get fit again. Doubt he'll start on Sat.

It'll go to the wire, but its (2nd Place) still ours to lose...

Hang on. We went 1-0 down to Real Scunthorpe (before a red card for them and even then, we kinda struggled), lost to a frankly pisspoor team of cunts from S6, shat a 2-0 lead away to snatch defeat away from the jaws of victory against Barceloldham and lost poorly away at the shittest team in Birmingham.

I want us to win every fucking game. If we lose, I want us to be outplayed ... I want Deadbat's reports to read that we playedour very fucking best and the other team were just too good. Can you HONESTLY say that has been the case? Even looking back, Carlisle away, Exeter at home ... all games we should have come away with more than we fucking well got.

We have the ability to go up with Charlton here and prove to the world that our last two or three seasons have been uncharateristically wrong for Sheffield United, not long ago THE top team in Yorkshire.

Now fucking Doncaster Rovers make us look like Rotherham, FFS.

pommpey

Like it. Best way to do it, get behind the team. like the away fans did tonight but at home also. (no I dont mean amass orgy)

Did any of these catastrophizing whingers predict we would be in a better position than second place with 10 games to go? No. These are the people who thought we would be relegated/glad to survive/mid-table if lucky/scrambling for points to get in the play-offs/take years to get out of this league. Bunch of mardy kids. Oh, but it's the Blades way. No it's not. Oh, but if we are looking forward to the rest of the season United will bottle it. No, your gnashing of teeth affects nothing but your enamel. United always let you down. No they don't. We are a glorious team with a vital place at the heart of football history. You are just whining. Dull, tiresome and predictable. Oh, but if we applaud our team they'll lose, the manager will lose the plot and the chairman will pull the plug. If you can't enjoy a promotion fight with three-quaters of the season played your team on target then you don't enjoy football and should take up a new hobby. Try sitting in a corner gently rocking and wringing your hands. Oh, wait a minute, that's what you are doing already. Tiresome.

Great post.

We fucked up massively against Oldham and the blowback from that led to the defeat at Walsall. Since then we have taken four points from two away games at two of the division's better than average teams (see the league table), which is a good return in anyone's book.

I see no reason why, with a run in somewhat easier than Wednesday's or Huddersfield's, we should not now get second.

Was thinking about this a lot last night after that result all sorts going round in my head, what if........ some will say this 2 point gap should be 8 points with victories again oldham and scunny. The simple fact is were not and back in august when we were all debating where we might finish i am pretty sure that most if not all blades would have taken 2nd with 10 games left. This league was never going to be easy it is probably the best top 6/8 tops for years and others improving further. We have to keep getting behind the lads and DW, we have as tougher run in as the rest do pigs won't be looking forward to the notts county game or udders BOTH away we aren't looking forward to the notts county game or MK both away, udders have to go to colchester, chesterfield, carlisle, they have charlton and pigs at home,(glad thats not our next 4 games). MK dons if anyone have the easier games but any side near the bottom won't be easy. It will probably go to the Exeter game but if we are 2nd come May 5th and thousands of blades make the trip down to exeter i know where my money wil be.

Set up by a good opener from super pig this has to be the post of the year so far.

Unless we fail to go up, in which case it can be ridiculed at length by mardy whiny kids!

No it cannot, the clue is in the last two sentences.

Do we have to wait until the end of the season to consider the "glorious team" bit?

I don't see why we need to wait:

We are a glorious team with a vital place at the heart of football history

Indeed. Only team to lose 3 playoff finals for a PL place.

No it cannot

We'll see about that.

JJ is talking about enjoying the moments now and the fight we are in. Those who look forward to saying 'I told you so' in a negative way are not enjoying it. If they class that as a win win situation because they believe in preparing for the worst while hoping for the best, that does not allow them to enjoy now.
One thing is quite clear, we all want success and there will be no greater feeling than beating the pigs to promotion and enjoying keeping ahead of them to the end.

That sums things up for me , there was so much anti warnock stuff even during the promotion season and in the prem , I can't believe it isn't counter productive and as for the

People are saying 'we would have been 8 points clear if we hadn't thrown away points at home to Oldham' etc but wendy lost 3 on the bounce against bottom half teams, Udders have apparently thrown away 26 points from winning positions this season including 3-0 up away at Bury last week. The only real FACT is where we are here and now which, as others have said, is a very good position, one which exceeds most peoples expectations on here at the start of the season.

Interesting - we have only lost 13 points from winning positions this season - the draws v Tranmere, Wednesday, Orient, Exeter and Colchester and the loss v Oldham. On the other hand, we have gained points from losing positions - the wins v Walsall, Preston, Notts County and Scunthorpe and the draws v Scunthorpe and Exeter ( we were both winning and losing v them) - again of 14 points.

Fleety, neither of them have had it in their control to move away from the pack a la Charlton, and not taken that opportunity. That's the reason the more fatalistic amongst us are looking at it with trepidation.

On paper and in my head, all we have to do is match the points tally of our nearest rivals over 10 games. Ask my heart if we'll succeed however....

It's also looking fashionable to reference our promotion season of 2005/06 at this point, but we were also 2nd (I think) at Xmas in both preceding ones too.

As I said though, heads up and crack on.

Since 1970 we have never been in the automatic promotion positions in the middle of March and not gone up. For once history (insofar as it takes side) is on our side.

Until a few years ago we'd never been promoted to the top tier for just one season....

Its too tight to call right now, but being chased is more stressful than chasing especially you when you are not at full strength..

Which sets up something I've thought for a while, how good is Williamson when we're losing? A goal, an assist and winning a penalty against Walsall, a brace against Preston and the equaliser against Scunthorpe! If he'd had that freekick against Wednesday after they'd gone ahead, maybe it would have bounced the other side of the line...

This is the key point for me. Regardless of how it ends, the entertainment value of this season has far surpassed any other in recent years.
We're joint top scorers in the league, averaging over 2 goals a game at home.
We go out to try and win every game whether home or away, as evidenced by us only drawing 6 matches out of 36 (the joint lowest)
We're in a promotion dogfight with Wednesday and all the added banter and rivalry that entails.

The "worst case scenario" that people are now dreading is a two-leg semi against Wednesday or a play-off final at Wembley.
These are the type of games that we should be relishing as a reward for the drab games we've attended in seasons past.
The away game where we played for a draw and ended up getting done in the last minute.
The end of season matches where there was nothing at stake for either team.
Whatever happens next, this season will go down in Blades legend along with 81-82, 88-89, 02-03.
We'll be back to mid-table Championship or maybe mid-table League One soon enough. Enjoy the fun while it lasts..

The fact we were in a position to 'stretch away' and didn't is irelevant unless you're saying we lost against Walsall because it was a game in hand and we got nervous because it would have taken us further away in the league. If anyone thinks that's the case then fair enough.

As Dazzler has pointed out, the stats are in our favour in most cases for finishing in the top two so if anyone is saying 'it always happens' they're wrong.

Now if we don't make top two, I'm with you ;)
