Some positives though are:

Management - 3 astute coaches who know the division and how to get the best out of the players we have. I've no doubt if allowed to recruit (whether that's with cash, frees or loans) they are best placed to remedy the issues in the squad. We aren't sat here waiting on another appointment and they can get on with the job of preparing the squad for pre season. This isn't like last time we were in this situation with Blackwell where we were dragged through initially by the quality of the squad which diminished over time along with our league position.

Talented young players - We have Brewster and Bogle to come back in who were starting to hit some real form prior to their injuries. Add Ndiaye to that who I don't believe will be going anywhere before January (assuming we sell Berge or Egan). Looking forward to seeing how Osula gets on as well.

GK position - we go into pre season with that position sorted which has rarely been the case over the past 10 years or so. We are also looking at hanging onto Davies so we have decent cover as well.

Released/Retained list - we seem to have released the right players and don't seem to be interested in retaining Hourihane. If we were talking about hanging on to any of them Id be worried as it would suggest recruitment is to be minimal and we simply needed the bodies.

Recruitment - whatever this will be at least everybody seems to be singing from the same hymnsheet. We haven't got Manager and Board pulling in different directions which led to the poor and costly recruitment in the PL which has to count for something PH has spoken of the need to recruit early rather than wait til the last minute which I don't think he would if it was unlikely to happen (but then this is SUFC so who knows).

Plenty of reasons to be fearful as well. I expect Berge and Egan to leave, its going to be very difficult find another MGW in the loan market, we are relying on a number of players comfortably into their 30s and there is no guarantee the training pitch is going to be sorted.

This sums up my feelings on the matter.

Can we really expect to keep both Berge and Egan?
 



Sky bet seem to know something about our chances next season as we do not Feature in their odds for next season.

That may change if we move quickly on the higher quality free transfers available

But the 3 coming down, especially if Burnley stay up, are 3 who will always bounce back up so that screws us
 
I've withholding judgement until I see the recruitment. I don't expect us to spend much, but let's see who comes in. Some very good free agents floating around.
 
Always optimistic.

Not hopeful, not expectant. Just see the positives. Go into every season with excitement at the possibility of success and go into every game with excitement at the possibility of a good game and/or a win. I come away feeling good 10x as often as I come away feeling down.

Everything else is just a sidestory imo.
 
If I remember rightly, we were all ecstatic about our chances in August because we had signed arguably the best manager possible, 🙄

Lot of deadwood out of door will free up money for wages, lot of good free agents around.

Who is your deadwood and how on earth are you going to persuade another club to pay their wages ?

The rules are clear - you can lose up to £39m over 3 consecutive seasons. Last season we registered a profit of £10m. This year we will have received £45m in parachute payments plus the sale of Ramsdale (£26m). A bunch of free transfer players to cover Centre-back injuries and try to get Scott Twine for a couple of million from MK Dons. Lewis-Potter would be great but I fear he will be too much for us now.

Up front we should stick with what we have.

If they'd been ready , they'd have played in the PlayOffs.
Have we got anyone on a par with Keenan Davies or Mitrovic coz that's how you get promoted ?

There are genuine factors that I can understand will cause pessimism.
Ei The loss of our 2 highest quality players (Gibbs-White and no doubt Berge).
Also our midfield is slow, old and getting older....we need fresh legs in there.

However there are genuine reasons to be optimistic and I start a season by focussing on that.
We had close to 50% of the squad out injured for many matches but we still reached the play-offs .....imagine having our injured players back next season? We have some genuine high quality young players.....N'Dieye, Bogle, Brewster....even Jebbison (not seen much yet but he's highly rated at the club as being special). We now have a team spirit and a closeness between management, players and fans.

Due to having Heckingbotham, McCall, Lester and even Sharp at the club....we now have a "United" club.....that fact takes any club a long way.

I think the inuries could have weirdly worked in our favour long term… After Slav’s reign, it was very unlikely we would have got autos, however good our run (ie Forest).

So then we look towards Play offs, well theyre a complete gamble as we all know, if you stood 4x blind folded people in a line and shot 3, it’s probably and accurate representation of a play off winner.

So then let’s say we got 3rd, lost the play offs narrowly playing out of our skins with Bogle and Brewster in a rich vein of form

We then lose Berge, MGW, Bogle, Brewster, Egan the following season, plus Didzy, Lowe, Freeman, Mousset. The team is decimated and every position needs signings… we leave it down to a upper management who have a pretty poor track record, and are trying to balance spending not too much, while making us competitive as a mid table champ team.

Glad we got where we did this season, might be for the best in long run so we keep some of our talented players for a push next season.
 



If for the love of God mcburnie finds his footballing gift then we have a front line to punish anybody in this league add that with a group that's together plus 6 more that hecky wants there's no reason we shouldn't be in the mix next season

Is McBurnie in the last year of his contract ?
If so I'm clinging to the hope that some players seem to suddenly find their form.

I'm glad someone else noticed this. I thought it was a bit strange. Luton odds went on day after Huddersfield beat them.

McBurnie will not come good. I think we've seen enough evidence that he's just a complete waste of time and money.
 
Always optimistic, regardless of who's managing or playing, signed or released. And regardless of the opposition, on the day, we have a chance of beating them.
And never disappointed. Regardless of the result.

They aren't mutually exclusive.
That said, this outlook has been years in the making. I don't think I could have written this on the train back from Cardiff following that Wolves game, or Palace at Wembley, or...

Time for a Sunday croissant.

Egan was the only player who was consistently playing all season in a much changed back five. One that has been one of the best that we have known at keeping clean sheets. Why do so many people think he’s so easy to replace?

He’s also got leadership qualities, seems attached to the club and seems a decent lad.
