How will that affect the team?

As I left the lane with my tail between my legs, I was concerned about how such a heavy defeat will affect the teams confidence for the promotion push. Although I felt the scoreline flattered them, they looked comfortable winners. If some of the players thought we were going up and able to deal with the stronger championship teams, perhaps that was a wake up call.

I hope they put it behind them and crack on with a win at Colchester. Incidentally LJF got torn a new one today.

Could go either way.

The optimistic side of me thinks that as long as we have come through today injury free then it'll have been a decent work out.

Strikers got chances from what I heard
Midfielders like Macca got decent mentions
So really it sounds like the back 5 really got worked over.

Sure it'll knock their confidence, but if they deal with it in the right way, then it should've been a good test for them.

They'll certainly have their feet firmly back on the ground

Our dodgy spell this season was founded on missing chances and gifting goals away. Recent performances have been good, even in defeat, but conceding four again is cause for concern. A big game at Colchester looms.

All that said, we should remember that our defence cannot be expected to survive without surgery if we do go up. Collins has never cut it in the Championship, McGuire is a kid, LJF a Swindon reserve and Lowton still needs to improve defensively. So lets only worry about that when we get there.

Edit - And of course, Simmo was an utter disaster for us in the Championship.

It was only just one game though JD, against a team who are promotion contenders. Not sure you can write the entire back 5 off just yet, but its a big wake up call for Wilson.

Sounded like all 4 goals were decent (not that it matters).

Four really good finishes - defence just seemed really slow against a decent championship side.

The scoreline seemed to flatter them because we played our part in a decent game, they were just far more clinical !!

An extremely cruel result. Their first 2 were practically undefendable and just the kind of goal that goes in when it's your day.

The 5 minutes after half time was crucial. We deserved to score and then, who knows?

Then a couple more completely flattered Brum.

Not worried at all. 4-0 is better than 2-2 and we know the chasm between the 3rd and the Championship. If we go up, major re-building is needed, but we all know that.

Actually, I'd be more concerned if I were Houghton. The better teams in the Championship will batter them.

I couldn't disagree more. We were totally outplayed today and if they aren't a top end chamionship side then we are, as it stands, in big trouble.

Brum deserved to win but definitely not 4-0. They had four shots on target which unfortunately all went in. Shows the difference between The Championship and League One. Championship sides take their chances where as a League One side usually take 1 in 3.

I think we'll bounce back ok. League One is very poor.

grafikhaus. Are you for real ? I mean really ? Brum won today in third gear. Too easy. The thing we lacked by comparison was physical presence, we were gaffered all over the pitch without being bullied. Williamson looked ponderous and slow, Quinn takes 20 touches when 2 would suffice. Simmondson's kicking was woeful the only time he got good leverage he hoofed it straight to their keeper. We were spanked today and I'm only consoled by the fact that it wasn't a league game

"they had 4 shots which unfortunately all went in " (rubs eyes in disbelief):cry2:

different day , different opposition
Birmingham are a strong slowly rebuilding team thats lets not forget won the league cup last season , and just left the prem after a a few years in the sun
Colchester , are no Birmingham

There's no pace or athleticism in our side. We can overcome most in the third division with experience and passing. To really progress, we need to be able to mix or game up a bit. As we saw today, we have nothing like a plan B. When they kept coming onto us very fast, we still insisted on trying to pass it around defence in front of them. In some ways it's nice tht they try and keeep it up, but in reality we've got a lot to learn and improve on.

Simmo never made a save. Pace is the real killer for us. LJF was piss poor today.

Question..
Flynn had started to come good before injury/illness so why now stick with Quinn? Shop window perhaps? If it is then he will be staying

I'm certainly not writing them off in this division - they've done really well. But if we somehow get promoted, I'd want three new faces in amongst that back five without question.

Let's just see if we get there before such surgery though, eh. :)

They were better than us and have a couple of good players who would never drop to our league because they would never have to, Burke is one I've always liked and Davies cost 8 mill not too long ago. They have a much better squad than us. More a sign of changes to compete in the championship than an issue now.

We had some good spells but despite them we didn't look particularly incisive. We need some pace to unsettle a team like that to add to our nice football. KMac played well in possession. They were just very clinical. I thought the first could have been defended better. Missed the second. Third and fourth were just good goals. Maybe the Elliott one we backed off and invited a shot but most league one players would have just fired wide.

They are a cup winning team with a lot of prem experience that costs more than our first 11 do. Trying to get back to the prem despite their problems. They are on a different level to us currently and we shouldn't forget it. It probably showed that we have a misguided wage bill towards some of our team but we can't address it until we run the contracts down.

I think it's a sign that we struggle against a good organised professional outfit which doesn't bode well in some respects. Taking chances at key moments in such games is so key and if we don't we will lose. We do create a couple of gilt edged ones each game but if they don't go in then it puts pressure on us.

I'm not too down. We did well in spells and if anything it shows that more work needs to be done, but along these same lines.

We are where we are and where we were this morning. Were a third division side who get excited about the prospect of beating a second division side. Even if we go up this season this is the sort of pumping we can expect on a weekly basis.

It's not pace for me but lack of movement which was evident last week as well. We wait for someone to create before moving instead thinking ahead. But maybe this is why we are 3rd tier.

Yes we do need something different to change games and this is why I hope we sign Billy Clarke or someone similar. I also think we need an experience centre half.

My concern is now about belief. I think we'll bounce back against a poor Colchester next week, but will the players believe that they can win away at Huddersfield on the 14th? I am questioning our big game mentality and they must be. Diplomat hit the nail on the head: it's about being clinical. Against Bury, Yeovil etc we miss chances, but get more and take those. I remember us having good chances in all the big games, but we did not take them. Away at Charlton Ched missed a sitter, yesterday at 2-0 down Lowton missed a good chance, Porter missed a sitter at 1-0 against Huddersfield. We simply have to start taking our chances in the bigger games. The truth is we've been wasteful in front of goal all season and even when we've comfortably beaten teams (like Yeovil, Bury, Colchester) the scoreline could and should!) have been 7 or 8, rather than 3 or 4.

Perhaps we've been getting ahead of oursleves recently. We are now entering a really tough month and yesterday might only have been the start of a wake up call. But honestly, do we really give a fuck if we scrape 2nd with this team? I certainly don't. With Simmo, Ertl, Morgs, Ched etc on their bike then we can use the wages on other players. I would sooner we strengthen/rebuild in the Championship, than League One. Plus momentum is important. Look at Norwich and Southampton!

Back to winning ways next week and this will quickly be forgetten. Can't say that I am too fussed about being out of the cup. Beaten by a team that won the League cup last year. No need to get too upset. It wasd the quarter of Burke, Davies, Wade, Elliot and Rooney that tore us apart. They are four very good players that are significantly better than pretty much anyone we have.

That's a quartet of five Olle.:D

That'll be why it looked like they had an extra man for most of the match. If Hughton told the ref that Burke, Davies, Wade, Elliot and Rooney were just four players that would go some way towards explaining why they often looked like they'd got a man over. I blame these squad numbers. Pesky number 22. And 17. No wonder the ref struggled to work out how many they had on the pitch - after all, he struggled to find his yellow card until near the end of the game.
