The melee yesterday got me thinking about the role refs play when something like that happens. In my opinion he has to shoulder some of the blame because of the way he rushes in to send Russell off. What he should have done was take him aside and show him the card rather than rushing in like one of the players would. I think this would prevent the flare up that you see all to often resulting in more bad blood between the players.

I think more often than not showing the red card immediately reduces the chance of a flare up.

There is a tendency these days for players on the side of the player fouled to react furiously in order to encourage the referee to give a red card. Once the red card is achieved, things tend to calm down (in the same way as the player who was fouled, having been mortally wounded, writhing on the ground in agony, only seconds before, suddenly achieves a remarkable recovery once the card is shown).

I think the referee did the right thing in showing the red card quickly, and the fact that this did not quell the United players fury tends to suggest it was genuine anger at the tackle. None the less, the point is we lost our discipline and as a result lost the opportunity to player the remainder of the game with an extra player. We only have ourselves to blame.

Pity Howard Webb did'nt show the red card quickly for Bottotelli this afternoon against Spurs. F.A. should give him a ten game ban or deport him back to Italy for what he did to Parker. No place for that kind of thing in football.

Yet what Lescott did to Kabul was ok too? They may get stick every game for a 50/50 call but at the end of the day you'd rather be sat in the stand watching then trying to do their job! Personally Howard Webb who has done Champo League and World cup obviously knows his stuff and IMO he would of sent Balotelli off he didn't see it as he was following a game which was played at 100 mph. Respect them.

Have to agree with you having seen it again. Webb was looking away when Bottotelli stamped on Parker. FA should act on it when they see it but I wouldn't gamble that they will.

i dont see how the f.a can do anything ,i mean how can you prove that stamp was deliberate ? by asking graeme souness ?

Fully agree. If referees were fitted with bionic eye-pieces which allowed them the benefit of super-slo-mo replays, maybe they'd make fewer mistakes but as it is, they're not perfect. Howard Webb is a good referee - he is at least consistent.
