What are the chances of Ben Doane reading this thread? Fairly high I would think.

If so he will see that he was" one of the ugliest footballers ever seen".

Also that his mother got pregnant with him at 15 and had to leave school. His dad was 16.

Nice.

When people post such stuff, do they have no consideration for a person's feelings or privacy?

Ah, but you have to understand that once you become a professional footballer you cease to have any feelings - so anything goes.

Maybe "my generation" had more respect for other people, the things around us, and authority in general.

Sadly those days are long gone.

People try to put you down
(talkin' bout your generation)
Just because you get around.....

:-)

If I am right about your age, your generation gave us Hitler, Stalin and the Holocaust. Still at least people were polite to footballers :-)

It rhymes with phone. At least that's the way Doane himself says it.

The goal at Crewe was a good strike from 30 odd yards to the right of the goal, but my memory of it was that Clayton Ince in the Crewe goal should have done a bit better with it...

The Queen Mother died the same day, Gawd bless 'er.

As I recall, that goal helped Wednesday stay up, as Crewe were down there with them. I think they might just have escaped anyway. Glorious strike it was, though.

Bloody hell! I'm not that old.

I was born after the war started, so you can't blame Hitler or Stalin on me.

I am a bit ambivalent about gas chambers. I'd use them on chavs and habitual scroungers. (That's a joke, by the way!)

This starts an entirely new "lame to fame" thread based around one's tenuous connections with SUFC's players' love interests.

My contribution is this: my ex had a friend who was once chatted up by Monty in a Leeds hotel.

Next.....

Thats strange i have an ex who was chatted up by monty in leeds not sure if it was a hotel but he was boasting about how many houses he had.

Went to school with his Uncie and am still in touch if anyone reply wants to know about him , he looked like being a quality player and suffered an ankle injury that finished his career ,his family were all pigs off Fox Hill but his uncle has never said owt about him not being happy with the way the club dealt with him

I'd stay away from the humour if I were you Darren, I don't know about "lame for fame", that's more "lame for a laugh" and it doesn't even work on any other level, assuming broomers is younger than 90.

It's interesting that I would consider jokes about gas chambers to be in very poor taste and far more offensive than calling a footballer ugly (a generational thing again?).

Anyway, in the age of civility and politeness that was the era you grew up in, it was perfectly legal to refuse to serve people in shops because they were black and engaging in gay male sex routinely landed you in prison.

Them were t'days....

Regarding the part I have put in bold (above), you surprise me.

Please quote the relevant law.

Just remembered a better one. Karen Finney was in my A Level English Lit classes at Newfield. She was Jeff Eckhardt's girlfriend and she later worked at the Lane.

I can definitely beat this one... Jeff is my cousin.

Certainly. Under common law any shop owner can sell to whomsoever they choose for any reason whatsoever. Hence it was perfectly lawful for a shop owner to refuse to serve someone because they were black. The law changed in 1965 when the Race Relations Act of that year made it unlawful to discriminate against anyone in the provision of goods and services on the grounds of their race.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_Relations_Act_1965

The Act didn't cover employment or housing , so it was still lawful to refuse to employ someone or rent property to someone because they were black. That was made unlawful by the Race Relations Act 1968.

The penny's just dropped. Broomers made a reference to a specific thing being better in the old days than it is today and you've come up with a list of things that were worse in the past to prove that he's wrong!

I'll be in touch if I need a good brief.

My point is that intolerance and cruelty towards ethnic and sexual minorities hardly shows "respect for other people".

Better luck next time...

Forgive my ignorance,, but does 'common law' mean that it wasn't written down? I was aware that innkeepers had the right to refuse entry to anyone without giving a reason - maybe it's the same common law.

how do you do it ? turn a thread about ben doane into an argument about fucking innkeepers ,incredible !!!

What, pray tell, inspired a thread about a full back who barely played for us?

I once saw a naked Santos but must admit averting my eyes rather than look at his todger. It was at Gym Plus not one of Darren's parties. He was telling me how he didn't like Blackie's man management style at the time. I was pleased with my ITK insight but was mostly wishing he'd put some kit on.

Doh .... maybe he could do the maths for himself regarding his parents ages ? I'm sure he realises his parents are just 16 years older than him and not 30 years older as maybe you would like him to think.

So you saw Santos' Johnson?

But could a shopkeeper refuse to sell today if he thought someone was abusive towards him?

The Queen Mother died the same day, Gawd bless 'er.

At least she lived long enough to see Ben Doane score against Crewe.

My aunt Val went out with Gordon Banks.

A girl I was at school with, Lucy Blackmore, dated Espen Baardsen.

Er...

...thats it.

Doh to you too! Of course he could work out how old he was when he was conceived. My point was that he may not have wanted having that information splashed all over a public website.

Santos now goes to the Gym near the Archer Road Sainsbury. I know this because yesterday he was using the Cross-trainer next to my Dad! Rob Page goes there too.

I saw Vinnie Jones's cock. There were a couple of other players as well but I was pissed I don't remember. I'd like to say Bryson and maybe Downes. It was after we got promoted from the old 2nd to the 1st division under Bassett.

There were quite a few players in the Sheaf on Bramall Lane getting rat arsed after the final game. Vinnie and a couple of others stood up on the bar and did a strip tease. The pub was packed United fans chanting. I'd had about 12 whiskeys so my memory of the incident is very hazy. Does anyone else have any recollection of this?

That could be another one. Ex players who aren't from Sheffield who settled in the area, and still locally

I can think of Tony Agana, Paul Beesley, Simon Tracey, Charlie Hartfield, TC and there has got to be loads more

I do like it when players who have led nomadic careers end up staying in our area. Aren't we nice people.

I think Gayle still lives in Sheff. Cowan does. Gage is is Dronfield. There will be more.

Santos not only lives in Sheffield he also goes to The Lane.

He was speaking to Bert in the car park just before a night game this season.
