Morgan Gibbs White is the best player I’ve ever seen wearing a United shirt.

If i could have seen Currie play on a finely manicured Desso pitch instead of the mud heaps and frost bound grounds of the 60’s and 70’s i am sure he would have been unplayable. However, players from his era were nothing like the athletes of today,a fag and a cup of tea at half time was the order of the day !! It is impossible to compare the two as the game is completely different.

Sure I get that mate. I suppose when I posed the question I was also thinking also about their impact on the team, the supporters and that wow factor.
Basically, as a player who gets you off your arse (not that we were sat on them in the old days) how does he compare?

I'd add Browny and Macca to your list, hopefully he's our player past the summer...
I know what you mean, but if you were to put a thread up here tonight saying ‘Stuart McCall is the greatest player to ever put a sheff Utd shirt on in the last 25 years, you’re probably going to take a battering aren’t you, I think Stuart would probably create an account to have a go himself.
Big statement and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But in reality he’s not the best in the last 30 years by a long way.

He is quality tho and we are lucky to have him. But the best ever? I don’t think so. Maybe a bit ‘result pissed’ ?
You’re entitled to your opinion too, name me 2 or 3 better then. It’s not as easy as it sounds.
You would have to be a young person to say that imo. Not taking anything anyway from him though, unplayable tonight, a top top talent.
Mate I’m 33 I can barely get away with going to nightclubs these days. I wouldn’t describe myself as young. I’ve seen a league cup semi final, 3 FA cup semi finals, 3 losing play off finals and 2 premier league promotions aside from that, not to mention 3 seasons in the prem, plus around 125 million quids worth of signings. I can’t think of anyone better in a United shirt. Put your money where you mouth is and tell me a better one or two in that time.

And also, controversially, I get Currie etc were class at the time at the level, but MGW would lap them 3 times in a 1500 metre race and smash them on a bleep test and can do things they can’t dream of. And for all the ‘the pitches were shit’ arguement coming my way: so were the diets. So was the first touch. Can’t compare to that level. It’s a different fucking sport. They used to eat Sunday dinners before games.

People comparing MGW to tonge have completely selective memories btw too. He was so hit and miss. When MGW is having a mare he’s still creating chances and still such an aggressive player (not necessarily angry but aggressively involved ALL THE TIME) tonge made a habit of going missing in a way that MGW never has, ever.

I'm 35 and been to all the games you mentioned.

I'd maybe say 02/03 Michael Brown. Running games for fun, banging in 20+ from midfield. He's one of my favourites.

Maybe Beattie the first time round?

I agree, as someone in my mid 30's, who's been going for almost 30 years, I can't think of many that were better than he is when he's on song. That goal tonight is one of the most ridiculous I've ever seen scored live.

Since the 90’s….
Glyn Hodges
Dane Whitehouse
Michael Brown

That’s just three off the top of my head. I’m not saying that he’s not a superb player, he is. It’s all about opinions tho mate and if that’s your’s then fair enough.

Also depends on criteria for - ‘best player’ in terms of skill Peter Ndlovu was one of the best on his day.

Get you mate, don’t disagree. I also posted this at half time tonight before THAT goal.

I think my point is that people need to stop seein MGW as ‘a decent loan signing’ and judging him as this and start realising it’s basically like putting prime Messi into the Turkish league ten years ago and judging his performances like that. As in, sometimes, some of the shit he’s doing that doesn’t come off isn’t necessarily his fault. People need to start realising how much better than this level he is at, including the management team, and need to start working out how to get the best out of him in this way. We don’t have a young potential player here, we have one of the greats on our hands. He’s a cheat code.

When MGW plays like has tonight I've not seen a United player dominate a game like that since Michael Brown in the 02/03 season.

I've been watching United since the mid 70s and seen a lot of excellent players, but James Beattie is definitely not one of them.

Do a thread saying that Peter Ndluvu is the best player to wear a sheff Utd shirt in the last 30 years and see how much shit you get then.

I love that reference though, because he was probs my fave player of that era too.

But remember we had players that cost about 35k in that team at the time so he stood out.

MGW would and maybe will go for 30-40 million pounds in the summer to a top, top club. Or stay at top 6 Wolves.

There’s a difference between likeable and quality. Even with 20 years of nostalgia behind it.

Except I don’t think he is the best player in the past 30 years…
My point being what is the criteria? Most skilful? Most creative ? All round ?
MGW is a very, very good player, however at times he has been so frustrating and at times petulant. To proclaim him the best ever is quite a bold statement. But like I said - everyone is welcome to their opinion. I’m not like many on here who shit their pants when someone disagrees with them!

Not even going way back to the era of Currie, Woodward etc he is not better than Brian Deane, yes he may be a lot more skilful and technically better than Deano so some would argue he is better, that’s fair enough it’s an opinion. But as an all round forward in a United shirt he is not better than Deano. Could actual name a fair few but I’ll leave it with Deano.

Deane, before he got glandular fever, was bloody ridiculous. Fast, strong, awkward to tackle, great in the air, intelligent and great crosser too... genuinely unplayable.

I don't go back as far as Woodward and Currie, but Hodges would have to be up there for me. And more recently (not that bloody recently) Borbokis. I'd agree in terms of sheer quality but only for a handful of games, Paul McGrath and Gordon Cowans. Jags too.

MGW though, is class. Great ability although aye, the flicks can drive you up the wall....but he's using it all more effectively and the partnership with Billy is something else. Hell of a showreel so far with some unbelievable goals too.

I don't think he's near the best to pull on a Blades shirt yet. But when you think of some of the goals we've seen in recent weeks, and moments like MGW's goal today, and Berge's flick round the corner first half to set Osborn free, and his crossfield ping straight to feet against Blackburn, we're watching some bloody class moments far too good for the Championship. We'd get about 4 points all season if we went up but let's just enjoy it !

In the days before every game had a bank of TV cameras, if you didn't go to a match, you missed anything and everything that happened. There were no highlights on a 24 hour sports news channel to show you the goal action that you missed. Currie and Woodward got you out of bed on a Saturday morning and made sure that you went to the game. I didn't go to many away games as a kid but I wanted to go to all the home games, just to see those two in action.

All I can say is “ Enjoy watching him whilst we’ve got him” he is definitely going places. Wolves must be delighted with his progress since the start of the season. When we played them in the FA cup I couldn’t see a place for him in their starting 11, but now I think he would walk straight into the team.
All the best to him, great player , great attitude and definitely great to watch. By far our best loan player, ever.

The Beard is one I remember as being a reyt loan signing who changed the feeling around the club.
MGW is total class, Wolverhampton must be very good to let him out on loan.
When we go up we must sign him

Any player that gets you off your seat as much as he does is some player !
He is electric when he’s on his game, which for a young kid is unique!
I remember Warnock saying that a young kid has 1 good game in 4,he should know, but Morgan surpasses that.
Enjoy the guy,he’s special but credit Hecky and co also.
How you can compare him to other players we have been lucky to have is unfair,he’s nothing like them in his role and contribution.

Sharp and MGW are becoming unplayable as a pairing. Pity they are not closer in age and going to be playing together for several seasons.
I think MGW is learning a lot from Billy, if he goes back to wolves next season it'll be reminiscent of Empire strikes back when Luke fucks off to cloud city and doesn't complete his training

class never changes
stan Bowles Currie Rodney Marsh and several others would have adapted to todays training regimes and been head and shoulders above the crowd

fans at other clubs flocked to see Currie generally getting one of their bigger gates of the season
such a pity theres so little videos of that era . even still photos are at a premium

OK, that gets the left foot, what about the rest of him?
We just need to tell wolves how shit he has been and he is carrying a potential career threatening injury, job done

Big if but IF we did go up the prince has to have a good go at buying him
They’d not let him go for less than £30m, no chance. They don’t have the biggest squad to start with, they won’t let a homegrown talent go on the cheap.
