Step up McBurnie

To be fair Basham was terrible when we first got him, like a tall Paul Thirlwell stood on the halfway line pointing while the game passed him by, he was one of the worst players in a midfield 2 we've ever had.

If he'd kept putting in that level of effort and performance he wouldn't have still been here, but if McBurnie can apply himself to his job the way Bash has then he too can overcome the many people who think he's bloody rubbish.

Let’s compare the fortunes of one of the hardest working and fittest lads in the group to the single most languid / lazy / slowest 👏👏.

Terrific 👍.

James Shield made what I thought was a reasonable comment on the Star's latest podcast.

He said that McBurnie had taken one for the team a bit in playing a target man type role.

Then the other chap spoiled it a bit saying yeah perhaps he should be more a number 9 like where Sharp plays.

You watch some of his decent actions and he is coming from a deeper position dribbling with the ball e.g. one vs the Pigs.

I don't see him as a target man at all. It's almost unfortunate that he's tall because that allowed Chris to Jon Parkin him. Not how he got his goals at all.

I also don't really see him as a fox in the box type either.

Billy wears 10, probably because his hero was Deano but Billy is a number 9.

I see McBurnie as a 10. Maybe not quite in the mold of McGoldrick but operating a little deeper to have space to move into.

I haven't seen Billy and him work as a pair that well but part of this is because he was deployed as a target man so both were relatively static at the top of the pitch. If he was deeper with more space in front of him, they might work better as a pair. There must be a fair chance we get to see that tomorrow.

I can imagine Gibbs-White gives N'Diaye a rest and McBurnie potentially plays off Sharp. Then again I'm pretty fine with whatever Hecky decides. He's made big calls and got results. Dare I say it - In Hecky we trust!

When they’re offside yeah 😂
Interesting viewpoint - as a professional striker , inded as any player , if I'm firing at goal from 8 yards , in any situation , training , practice-match , offside in a real match , or indeed onside in a real match , I'd like to think it's better to hit the target than Row Z

I couldn’t give a fuck if he scored a goal which wouldn’t have counted, that’s for certain 🤣🤣

I don't think he's a goon. Just my opinion. I think he was pretty decent for us in his first season, and obviously very good for Barnsley and Swansea in the season and a half before that. He then had a nightmarish 18 months. Part of that downturn is his doing, in my view. I think he had/has some growing up to do, as evidenced by his dopey behavior off the pitch. But perhaps part of it was just a spell of poor form, which can happen to even very good players, and perhaps part of it was down to poor management, loss of confidence, or just being in a team that couldn't win a game of football for love nor money. A few players who looked awful last season and the first part of this are starting to look like maybe they're not lost causes after all. Maybe McBurnie could be another.

Personally, I'm always going to be slow to write a player off. That's just a matter of personality. Others are quicker to jump on a player's back after a few (or a lot of) bad performances, and that's a matter of personality, too. Luckily we're all just punters on a football forum and it doesn't matter what we do or don't acknowledge.
Very measured perspective- I hope you’re right and I’m wrong, I really do

He's supposed to be a striker , so I find it strange that you "couldn't give a fuck" about his level of shooting skill.
Anyway , it's not up to you & me , it's up to him to determine his future.
I hope for our sake that he improves.
Whether his goals get us promoted or his value improves so we cash in.
It is in no one's interest for him to fail , whether you think he's the second coming of Christ or a stupid lowlife thug

The shot wouldn’t have counted anyway, as it was offside, can you not get this through your skull?

The shot could have been on target and saved by the goalie or hit a defender's arse , but the fact of it being on target us a sign of better execution than landing in row Z.
Why do you think "shots on target" is seen by everyone interested in football as something worth measuring ?
Is there anything in your skull ?

We are at cross-purposes , you are clinging to technicalities whilst I am talking about the shooting ability of a player who divides opinion.
I truly hope he gets some on target today + that some of them go in + that the ones that go in are not judged offside.
But even if he doesn't technically score , I will credit him with all his shots on target , whether offside or not.
I will also credit him with the standard of his general play + the avoidance of committing stupid fouls or unnecessarily winding up the ref , to our disadvantage

Ball just seems to bounce off him, thought he did ok coming on in the last game but he's not getting into the game today

Used to have a lad in the office. He'd turn up every day, mope about half arsed, put in half the work to the point everyone around him had to put in extra effort to balance it out.

Reminded me of McBurnie

Couldn’t trap a bag of sand, when he comes deep and under no pressure he receives a 5 yard pass and gives it back, pretty easy, could stick Foderingham up front to do that. Anywhere up top in and around their area where we actually need him to perform he can’t, just not good enough. Get Jebbo on because starting this lamp is going to cost us promotion.

I don't rate him, but I'm looking for positives. Decent header, but other than that he's done very little. His interplay is atrocious, passing too hard or too soft.
Which header mate? The one 4 yards out straight into the keepers hands or the free header he put wide and couldn’t even get on target?

Yes he's caught MGW out twice, once with a short ball, once he practically shot at him.

He's poor isn't he. Doesn't look like Theres a goal in him. Everything he does is scruffy. He can't shoot for toffee

Be better as CB 😂 would rather have Jebbison play any day.

No excuses for that today. Any chances we did create he fluffed them.

Strange because I thought he was decent today. Not the best player on the pitch but not the worst. Got in some good positions and showed great skill to get the shot away that was cleared on the goal line. If that had gone in and we'd won 1-0 people would be jizzing themselved over his performance. Him, Berge and Robinson are all picked on merit by the manager, and none of them was terrible today. Berge and McB are similar in that they have a loping stride that can look a bit casual
