Indulge me. I’ve been on here for years without a self indulgent post. 40 Years before we play WBA on 9/2/22 I went to my first game. The mighty Stockport County at home. I was eight and I remember .....

Asking if United would play in stripes (rather than the Ajax style strip of the year before)

Why are there two goals? (At school the useless one played in goal whilst everyone else tried to score in one goal)

Stockport had a bloke from my street in Dronfield playing for them (Dave Sunley, former Weds) and they played in green & yellow stripes. We won 4-0 I think.

I was befriended by an elderly man who made monkey noises whenever a certain Stockport player had the ball. Funny to see an old man jumping around like an ape when you’re eight. Obviously not funny once the penny drops some years later.

Does anyone else remember the game?

Were you talking about David Mossman from Dronfield that played for Stockport in the late 1980s? He was a Wendy youth/reserve player in 1982

I used to stand near him. He was an old eccentric guy, but he always made monkey chants at black players which was disgusting. I think looking back he may.have not been well, he was a little odd. I also remember an old lady who used to have a radio listening to the results who was nearby.

Dave Sunley lodged with one of my great aunts while he was with the grunters. She lived in one of those terraced streets surrounding The Sty and took footballers in. I remember being at her house and briefly meeting a long-haired tall youth that was him.

I had to mark Dave Sunley during training when trialling at Hillsboro as a 15/16 year old CB. Remember thinking he had fabulous hair. Had to play defence against attack, and it was him, Mick Prendergast or Brian Joicey testing us schoolboys out. To be honest it wasn't that difficult as all 3 of 'em couldn't be arsed.

I stood close to there when I was a kid in the 1980s.

I remember the guy. He stood really close to the front, sort of where only small kids were standing. I don't specifically remember him monkey chanting but others around me did (this stopped when we signed Richard Cadette).

He was indeed a little odd, shouting at the top of his voice about the game to no one in particular. I remember he wore a flat cap, had glasses, and sometimes carried a big shopping bag like my Nan had, and once or twice he was accompanied by an old lady who I assumed was his missus.

I also remember the lady with the radio. She hung her bag on a bolt sticking out of the pillar she stood next to.

The other memorable guy in that area was the one who used to shout "bleeding hell fire!" when anything went wrong on the pitch.

If my memory serves me well, this is the game one of our players had a shot from the edge of the area which was possibly going wide before king Keith stuck out his arse and deflected it in!

Yes, I'd forgotten some of those details , he did have a large shopping bag. We were probably stood close by! I don't remember.the guy who said 'bleeding hell fire!'

That programme detailed almost the immaculate line up.. well as a kid who knew no better.. but how come Morris had his debut when Charles was 12? Or was Neville having his perm that day?? Someone can’t have played or been on bench?

Do you really think the line up on every programme are always correct?

Team was Waugh, MacPhail, Garner, Matthews, Houston, Kenworthy, Morris, Trusson, Edwards, Hatton, King. Sub Neville came on for Hatton

Getting in early before I forget...... 40 years ago tomorrow 21.4.82 promotion chasing Peterborough 0 The Blades 4. Wow, 40 bloody years !! So many memories of that evening. Dad, as per, getting home late and driving the 90 ish miles to Peterborough like a man possessed. Me and my elder brother sat in the back doing school homework, veterans of dad's leaden right foot. His cousin, not so much a veteran, a bit older than, us strapped in the front seat getting paler by the mile. Turning up at the ground and walking in behind the goal with thousands of Blades just as we kicked off. Three up at half time, Boro's manager Peter Morris's words pre match in the local rag coming back to bite him on the arse,words to the effect...."Sheffield United will have so much defending to do they'll barely get out their own half"....cheers Peter.
The long drive home, happy, not bothered that we'd got school the next day even though where I went no one bothered much about how SUFC were doing in Division 4..... I didn't care. I bloody loved that team. I still bloody love that team and will always bloody love that team. I'd been watching us since 1972 and known nothing other than relegation until that glorious year we became champions.

One of the great nights. Despite the season we'd had, I'm sure it was still any 4 from 5 (of which Posh were one) to go up so could have gone horribly wrong. We'd not played them yet so could have been anything. Turned out we were just way better than them!
Never in doubt after that night (for either of us).
