If Chris Wilder was Warnock and Jokanovic was Bryan Robson does this mean Heckingbottom is Kevin Blackwell?

Is history repeating itself? We had a True Blade as manager (Warnock/Wilder) who took us to the Premier League, but unfortunately we ended up relegated. A respected 'big name' (Robson/Jokanovic) replaced them, but failed to win over the fans who were dubious that they were what we looked for in a United manager. Then came along a replacement (Blackwell/Heckingbottom) who had worked behind the scenes with the True Blade manager and there was an immediate improvement in results which got the fans on board again.
I don't know if this means we will lose to Burnley in the playoffs next season?

No.

I actually enjoy watching us play under Hecky but even when we won under Blackwell, I often came out of the ground feeling like I had been ripped off.
When he took over from Robson we genuinely played some good football for the rest of that season. Cotterill was a good signing on the right, we played some decent attacking football. It went downhill from there.

Different times really.

Warnock was great but built a side that played a much more direct approach.
Robson wanted to play more a passing game and was backed, much more than Warnock was as well. (If we'd let Warnock spend a further 6m we might have stayed up!)
Robson however wasn't actually a good manager though.
Blackwell came in and got us back to basics, got us on a run and we nearly made the playoffs. Following season did pretty well results wise but not always performances. But it was effective football. He shouldn't have been sacked 4 games into the season either.

Wilder built a side that played fairly unique attractive footy but also had a hardworking side to it.
Last season it did not work as well for multitude of reasons, and Wilder did spend some money.
Slav wanted to play differently but hadn't been backed enough.
Hecky has come in and got us playing more like Wilder had us previously and it suits the side more too.

There is a certain symmetry that we'd have been better with that squad, in going for more of the same rather than having Robbo try to convince us Monty was his long lost son than being the superb defensive spoiler he actually was.

Much like Slav spent time convincing Brewster he should consider a career as a winger before Hecky came in and played him to his strengths.

Here's hoping for a different outcome!

So does that mean Nigel Adkins was Adrian Heath? 😳

I know where you are coming from, there are similarities in the last 12 months to that period.

Hopefully we go one step further this year and then write some new history

No, our players sometimes attempt to control the ball before swinging a wild boot at it.

I distinctly remember Jayden Bogle getting the ball under control even though it was behind him, and he was off balance, before slotting it home.

He'd have been dropped for showboating and providing entertainment if Blackwell was manager

Fair enough. In my defence I barely saw much of his early tenure as I was working away a lot on the weekends back then.

Some analogies in that they are all the sideshow bobs…..but Blackwell was quickly out of his depth with a very good squad, but Hecky is quietly going about his business after being handed a poisoned chalice

Ditto. I stopped going to matches as I had to give up half a day for travel etc to get to Bramall Lane and I left the ground bored and frustrated no matter the result.

He confused me as I remember playing against Hull at home after Robson was sacked when Blackwell took over, and we went down to ten men. Instead of taking off a striker and playing for the draw, Blackwell took off a defender and we outplayed them and walked away convincing winners, despite Hull having the extra man advantage. At that point I thought Blackwell was going to be an exciting manager. Turns out this was just for that season as we had nothing to play for. The following season was a total borefest watching talented flair and attacking players being suffocated due to his unimaginative battling hoofball. I hated that season regardless of getting to the playoffs.

Hecky likes his flair players to express themselves, so I can't see him doing the same. We also don't have our Terry Robinson selling off our assets for 50p and a used Ford Cortina.

When Blackwell took over from robson we were a good watch. I suppose the pressure was off. I remember watching us beat Bristol city at home and we looked great with Gary speed having a particularly good game. I walked out thinking this was exactly what I wanted.

Unfortunately I think he was brought in with an eye on selling our assets but keeping us competitive, which to be fair he did and we were unlucky to come third that year, but god it was a difficult watch at times. I remember Blackpool coming and they were on a right run and we thumped them 3-0 which was a fantastic result but even that was a hard watch. It went to full on proper percentages stuff that was an insult to some of our players. I remember one game, Ipswich I think, where it clearly wasn’t working and the crowd were getting on their back to just pass it rather than lump it into a corner, press and hope somehow a mistake led to a chance. Morgan heeded this and passed it on the floor. Everyone cheered. Blackie went apeshit. But we actually did a move and had a really good chance off the back of it.

Clever players like Quinn were reduced to hooking things over his shoulder in to no man’s land. Fans derided him and questioned why he kept getting picked. But it was because he was following instructions. I hope we never embrace a style like that again.

I got the impression that despite standing right next to Warnock for so long that Blackwell hadn’t absorbed a single thing about man management. It seemed to be run by wanting people to fear him and treating people like shit. I suppose his own character didn’t allow him to develop in a way.

I forget the player but I was told by his mate how he had a choice of Leeds under Blackwell or Wendy. He was told to go to Leeds at a certain time. He thought this was to watch training and be shown around. He was ignored for hours then had ten minutes with a rude Blackwell who offered him something like two grand a week and expected him to sign it and be grateful. Blackwell knew he’d got better offers and spent zero time trying to explain where he might fit in or even say that he wanted him. He fucked him off and signed for Wendy for five grand a week and went on to have a very unproductive spell there instead whilst fleecing them of money they didn’t have. I liked him.

No, Hecky is the man. Wilder couldn't get this squad playing, Jokanovic couldn't get this squad playing. Along comes Hecky and slowly confidence and belief comes back to the players give him time and Brewster and McBurnie will be scoring goals like they did at Swansea. Throw a few youngsters like Jebbo into the mix and we will look like a team again. Say what you want about his time at Leeds and Hibs Hecky is no mug he will get us firing again if not this season then the next.

The best performance was the Preston playoff semi home game

We were immense
