have we been blessed with some great keepers in recent years? Kelly, Tracey, Paddy, Rees......

We now have Simmo....average at best. Have we been spoiled?

You forgot Richardson. He was awful too.

Beno (Benstead) was ok, Budgie (more clubs than a golf pro) not bad. Maybe that young lad Willis is the one. After all Mervyn Day started young for Wet Sham back in the mid late 70's at 19 and he was good then.

Oh I remember them well......but I was talking about recent keepers. Derek Richardson, Ramsbottom etc....oh dear

He's very poor and costing us points regularly.

Can't believe we didn't get someone in over the summer.

We should of tried to land Carl Ikeme instead of Simmo with the value of hindsight.

As a general shot-stopper, he isn't too bad. A typical example of that was yesterday from the Madine effort first half. But in terms of controlling the penalty area, or dealing with anything under pressure, he is pretty bad. For someone as experienced as he is, these aren't the sort of mistakes they should be making.

Most keepers can shot stop well. It's command of the area that makes the good ones.

He's shit.

He's worse than crap!! Had my heart in my mouth every time a ball went into the box yesterday. He just doesn't look the part at all, I mean, he looks like a bag of shit when he comes on the pitch. He's cost us again, not just turning over the grunters, but an important 2 points as well. I just don't see how DW can justify playing him. Something has to be done, but what, I don't know. With Simmo playing it's going to make it a long hard struggle in a division that we should be pissing!

true true
hpow can we ever be confident of winning games if we have this clown in goal ?

Simmo gives you that lovely feeling, the same kind of feeling you get when you drive towards a gap that's way too small. The feeling when your arse doesn't know if it wants to be like a balloon knot or a manhole. You know, terror mixed with dread and a sense of the awful inevitable that's just bound to happen.

He's one of two serious weak links in the side (the other being Porter). I feel United cannot get promotion with this man in the side, I think that whatever they might say in publlic, privately the back 4 must have no confidence in him. Porter is just as bad too in the forward position.
His inability to hold the ball up or finish simple chances (Huddersfield at home for example) will cost us as dearly as Simonsen at the other end. Its just that the goalkeeping position is such a specialist one it becomes more highlighted when they cock up.

so its confirmed ,not one single blade wants him in goal
except the manager

unfortunatley he is our only option at the moment. Long is nowhere near ready to be first choice. I would try and get someone like Mike Pollitt in on loan lots of experience.

Never mind the back four, find me one Blade who has any confidence in him! The bloke is a liability, plain and simple. We've seen it time after time after time, he's just not good enough, even at this level!

Given our wage budget and lack of cash, who would you replace him with in January? (or before on loan if its still possible?)

I disagree ,if Porter had played instead of Cresswell we would have scored more than 2 yesterday. His movement is much better and he gaves Evans more room and more for Quinn and Macdonald to aim for. His one big failing is pace ,all strikers miss chances ,I am really surprised he didn't play him against the pigs after he and Evans had both scored in the previous game.

I think we were blessed that we had someone with an eye for a keeper at a time when they could be picked up cheaply. Since the transfer market went out of control there's been players from all positions changing hands for silly money and as a prime game saver/winner the keeper carries a high premium. It becomes a gamble based on several factors and I do feel that since signing Kenny we've lacked any kind of quality cover. We have signed players that should be good enough rather than ones that are. Simmo is just an example of that transfer policy and the position clubs and managers find themselves in. Nobody has been willing to groom a young keeper because the waiting game is too long to have someone ready for the first team and no player wants to sit in reserves or be loaned out to feel like they are not wanted. I also would question just how good some actual goalkeeping coaches are. The "I'm an ex-pro with a reasonable reputation" brigade doesn't impress me that much. Just cos they were made doesn't mean they know or understand or even explain to others how it was done.

To be fair judgey owd spadge, I think Wilson probably has his hands tied. Long is very young and probably not ready and SS is one of the highest earners in the sqaud. Can you imagine him going to McCabe for extra cash? 'We need some money for a new keeper' ...... 'hang on a minute, I'm shelling out over 500k a year on one you already have. Use him'. Bit of a dilemma.

Yes we've been spoiled, but this has no effect on Simmonsen's ability. He is rubbish. As others have stated, his shot stopping is not bad but his command of the box is terrible. He makes everyone nervous and just looks like an accident waiting to happen. He had a let off in the first half when he dropped a routine save and it hit the post and he looked uncomfortable afternoon. Even when he came and punched/caught he did not look confident. I still have not seen the replay of the goal on Sunday (andin real time my view was slightly obscured my the fella in front) but it looked like a powder puff attempt to get at the ball.

Very poetic SV :)

Was in the Lion after the game on Sun-di. Meant to ask for you, but forgot.

Maybe we should get Blackwell back as a goal keeping coach??!!
