He did great till he spent big money on shit.
Then he fucked up + fucked off.
The stress of seeing his own failures so quickly wipe out his previous 4 seasons of success , especially at his beloved club , made him mentally ill.
You could tell from the bollocks he began to talk that if he didn't get out , the emotional strain would probably hospitalise him.
He knew there was no solution coz he'd spent all money.
And though he needed to leave by the back door for his own good , he managed to get a payoff.
And he left the club & squad in a shit state , with nothing to show for 2 years in the PL.
I don’t think it wiped out what came before. He will have learnt from mistakes he made.
It was a steep learning curve but once again I’d like to hear about the players that you would have tried to sign who wanted to come and play for the club.

Have you ever had to work under sustained pressure? Let’s not forget the circumstances that we all found ourselves in at that time. I don’t think it’s necessary to suggest he would have been hospitalised by the weight of it all. Seems like you have a real venomous dislike for a fellow Blade who despite that last season more than made up for it before.

I feel more embarrassed listening to people like yourself slate him than about the season we had. It’s laughable to say the squad he left was In shit state. Have a look at those clowns the other side of the city and you will see what shit state actually looks like.

I hope if we do sing owt daft, the Boro fans respond back with:

"You're all ungrateful wankers"
or
"He's one of ours now"

Or sumat of that ilk.

Big shame really. Got us up to the promise land in spectacular fashion then while riding high bloody Covid came along and ruined the season.

The 2nd season was just a complete disaster and I think it was the Palace match where you saw Chris realise everything had gone tits up.

On his player signings yeah if I’m honest Brewster, McBurnie, Berge and Ramsdale proved expensive flops. Only Ramsdale improved as the season went on.

One big thing to remember is JackO. His injury was a disaster for Chris. Finding his replacement was pretty awful in that we signed Jack Robinson who wasn’t very good then trying Bryan who I think is really only a known footballer because of his girlfriend.

When I hoped Utd would consolidate then become a stable prem team it ended up same old Utd. What a demise though?

Stand up if you hate Wilder
Stand up if you love Wilder
Join hands
And sing kumbaya
Modify the last bit and it’s a winner.

Stand up if you love Wilder
Stand up if you hate Wilder
Sit down if hate wilder
Sit down if you love Wilder

Repeat for the entire first half.

Would be class to watch that on Sky and no one would be cold during the match.

Agree with a lot of that mate. But I don’t think Sander is a flop. He’s had some bad luck with injuries. Can’t say he’s set us on fire but I’ll stand by this and say he is absolutely quality and will show that over time.

rolling stones classic

we used to sing his name
all game long he took us up
he could do no wrong
Well, he used to run around , no matter which team came
he spent all our money, playing his high class game

but now we used to love him

but its all over now

Well I will give him a resounding clap for giving me some of my proudest and exciting times as a Blade since I walked into the stadium for the first time in 1970

We can ,and do , all grieve to some extent or other what happened in the second season and no doubt he made some massive mistakes but we would have taken the roof off in gratitude had the first season played out with no Covid .

We missed that opportunity and whilst it will never be the same he will get thanks from me

Then move on and get in with life under the next potential hero (whoever and whenever he , or she,may be)

No dislike , just not seduced by his previous glories & love of the club into pretending he didn't fuck up.
Why do you say it's laughable to say the squad he left was in a shit state ? It certainly was.
For a club that's done 2 years in the PL to be playing 2 old men as strikers ?
To have virtually no midfield ?
To have no physically dominant athletic CB.
To be so brassic that it had to sell its goalie + even then couldn't make a single purchase ?
To struggle in the Championship compared to other recently relgated clubs ?
Open your eyes.
I don't hate Wilder but I do hate the deliberate ignoring of the evidence that he left us in tatters after bad signings , stupid signings of untried Brewster when a LCB & MF was crucial , stupid Lunny situation , stupid awards of unnecessary contracts to cronies who subsequently sat on their arses , stupid clinging to a failing system of play.
He clearly "lost his grip" from the moment he played an unfit JoC in the restart in Spring 2020.
But equally the Board are to blame for failing to properly supervise & ratify his decisions.
Between him & the Board , the club PISSED AWAY the best chance in my 55 years of supporting dem Blades for them to spend a decent period in the top division.
Chris Wilder can't escape his fair share of my anger & sadness about that.
He said he'd never compromise the club's finances - he did.
He said he'd not leave "by the back door" - he did (though that is to some extent excused by his mental suffering at the time).
What is truly laughable is the last line of your post , inviting me to compare our squad to the pigs ! What relevance are they ? Had they had 2 years of PL income ?
Our comparators are Fulham , WBA , Bournemouth & other yoyo clubs.
Anyway , if you like Wilder so much , give him a nice present on Saturday ... Give him McKnob , Moussefat , Brewster's Millions & Burkey Boy ... But make sure he takes over their wages.

Morning Gav (or Whit or Mrs Wilder or whatever your name really is)....feeling a bit better this morning, booze wearing off a bit now?

The embarrassing thing is listening to the likes of you and Cheeseboard making up excuses for a guy that admittedly had great success but also held the board to ransom on more than one occasion for a new deal by threatening to leave then monumentally failed in many areas, wasted millions, oversaw one of the worst sides in premier League history, blamed everyone but himself calling his squad League 1 quality as the whole thing fell down around his ears. He said he wanted to leave after the Palace game but wouldn't without his suitcase stuffed full of money....but yeah, "once a Blade" and all that eh.......

You say he has "learned from his mistakes".....whoop-de-fucking-doo....great news for Middlesbrough that.

"worked under sustained pressure".........I think the vast majority of the fucking population has been working and living under sustained pressure for the same period....what makes Chris fucking Wilder so special in that regard? He's a very highly paid football manager for fucks sake, for the vast majority of the time he was "working uner sustained pressure" he was doing so in empty fucking stadiums...

It usually takes us 13 years to get back up to the top division for a brief visit.

I propose once we’ve finished Wilder’s song, whatever it may be, we launch into a heartfelt and emotional version of “Heckeh Forever” to the tune of the timeless Spice Girls hit, Viva Forever.

Not a dry eye in the house surely and I imagine Chrissy might even join in for parts where Mel C is harmonising, albeit it under his breath, as a tear gently rolls down his cheek.

A few points here that made me want to respond. Whilst respecting your views, Gav, I am of the view that CW’s departure was a shitshow and that he carries a deal of responsibility for it (but not exclusively). I don’t wish the guy ill but I don’t particularly wish him well either. When the going got tough I’m afraid the ‘tough’ Chris got packing

For me it wasn’t about the signings (although they were symptomatic of a perfect storm of mismanagement and chaotic dealings). It was the lack of willingness/ability to even recognise there was a problem let alone fix it. We had clearly been ‘sussed’ and CW did not have a clue what to do about it. The signings did not fit any new thinking or strategy because there simply wasn’t one so we ended up with very expensive round pegs in square holes. The existing square pegs such as Lundstram had apparently rusted solid into place and no amount of managerial WD40 were going to shift them with CW in charge. Shocking management.

Yes I have had to work under sustained pressure and public scrutiny in my line of work so not sure how that figures in your comments. It’s about risk and reward and CW, in line with all Prem managers, was rewarded significantly as a top flight manager . That’s the deal and there’s levels of accountability that come with it. I don’t think the subsequent criticism that has come his way is therefore indicative of ‘venomous dislike of a fellow Blade’. I think it’s fair game when you earn millions of pounds a year.

I don’t think it’s laughable to say we were left in a shit state. We were in complete free fall from the top down and comparisons with the garbage on the other side of town are irrelevant. Whether it was hubris, incompetence, lack of ability or, more likely, combination of all of these I’m afraid he ended four glorious years with a taste that remains very sour.

I’m not going to boo him at the Lane. I’m certainly going to stand and applaud him either. I think he could and should have managed his own exit better but, similar to the rest of his final 12 months in charge, I think ego had overtaken any rational thinking or professionalism

I can't disagree with any of that. I still don't get how he got a pay off though if it was more him walking than a sacking - it seems, but no one definitely knows. If it was mutual maybe it was a much reduced pay off. This will no doubt eventually come to light one day. Interested in the short term as to what Chris Wilder days in his pre match interview!

I honestly go along with all of the above pal. The only thing I can throw into the mix is that when asked “ what are you looking forward to the most” when taking the Boro position his response was “Not being lied to”
Was that what he actually said?! Not heard that. I can fully believe that to be honest. Whatever people think of McCabe it seems If you take the McCabe view that the Prince was underhand in how he was able to obtain sole ownership.

I think with Berge it is kind of a flop but yes it’s been about bad luck rather than player quality. Hopefully see him reach his potential here but we’d need to get promoted to keep him.

I would say in this post though keen that on the extending of contracts for his cronies, you have to remember that at the time those players were paying really well and were crucial to the success of 5-7th in the Prem at the time, it seemed only right to reward those players but also good sense because they were set to be out of contact the season after or possibly the one after that. I don't see how even the most critical of blades fans could label it as bad management at the time. Of course in hindsight it went horribly wrong but again could anyone, anyone, predict the downfall of the majority of the team as it happened, with exceptions of Bash, Egan, Sharp and McGoldrick.

Yet those same players along with other he signed for millions he labelled as "League 1 quality" not long after.

Sorry pal it’s just Gav, my actual name. But it’s Ian to you and not Wit, but nice to see you showing respect in terms of Mrs Wilder, there’s a good lad.

Not sure about the booze wearing off, seems like you are in it early today sausage.
I know all about working under pressure mate, do you? Maybe you do so you should show a little more compassion, money doesn’t make any difference when it comes to mental health.

I’ll be giving Chris Wilder a clap where as it sounds like you would prefer to give him the clap. Then I hope we turn them over 3-0, nothing too embarrassing but enough to show our playoff rivals who the boys are.

If we don’t talk any further I hope you enjoy the match on New Year’s Day (if it goes ahead).

All the best for 2022 pal. UTB 👊🏻

It’s staggering how many people prefer Wilder to Sheff Utd, it’s evident in this thread and many others. Wilder isn’t here anymore, the Blades will be here forever, I can’t wait until this fixture is done with then most of us can get on with what really matters, Sheffield United football club. I couldn’t give two shits about what smoggy Wilder does now, in fact you could move this thread to other sport, or music if that suits better. 😁

Some well made points, and I respect your point of view too pal.

I stand by the laughable comment though, part of the reason I’m making a comparison with the Pigs is that look at the situation we were in when Chris took over and they were convinced of an imminent return to the Prem. The way they have been mismanaged on and off the pitch is by far worse than where we are at.

We were drowning a very slow death in that division for years and the rise to the Prem was nothing short of miraculous. Again I’m not sure who he should have signed that wanted to come to us? I’m still waiting for who these Galaticos were that he failed to sign.

Again repeating myself I’m not his Cheer leader and I support Hecky and the lads on that pitch, the same lads that I went down on the train to Fulham with to support, who put in a fantastic performance despite many in here saying how shit they all are.

He probably did buckle under the pressure that came with a shocking run of results but we lost out two most important components, JOC and us at the lane.

I don’t give a shit about playing behind closed door being the same for everyone, it wasn’t the same for us and made a huge difference not being able to roar us along and lift the playing ability up a notch.

But I take on board a lot of what you say mate in what is always going to be an incredibly polarising subject. I wish Chris all the best at Boro but I hope we can turn them over at the lane and then again if the playoff situation arises.

I’m fully behind the club and Hecky. Let’s hope it’s a new chapter and good times lay ahead for all of us all in 2022.

Regardless of some handbags on here between me and others I wish everyone a very happy 2022 for you and your families.

I’ve said by bit on it all now.

Onwards and hopefully upwards Bladesmen.

Happy New Year.

UTB 👊🏻❤️

Like to think you are a smart one don't you? Throw out a few insults and finish it off with well wishes....seen your type loads of times, proper snide kidney puncher....

For what it's worth I know all about Mental Health issues thanks very much. You say that "money doesn’t make any difference when it comes to mental health" which I completely agree with having turned down several work opportunities over the years for exactly that reason. So whatever you think you know, if Wilder was suffering as badly as you claim then he would have left after the Palace game, pay-off or not....

No I won't be clapping Wilder, but I won't boo him either out of respect for the good times. I won't clap someone who left my club the way he did, who held us to ransom, who shouldered none of the blame. Any manager or player that conducts themselves professionally whilst at the Club, leaves and continues to hold the Club in high regard is welcome back at any time. The rest can fuck off.

I wouldn’t kidney punch you pal. I’d just lay one on your jaw my mate.
