Player Suggestion Eberechi Eze

To be honest, I’m disappointed less with the fact we’ve missed out than with the fact it’s Palace to get him. I’d put them as likely below us next season – Eze is potentially the sort of player that could have a significantly positive impact on their fortunes.

QPR finished bottom half of a worse league with Eze playing. I wouldn't have thought he'd have too big an impact.

Perhaps someone can correct or at least throw light on this question.....

I thought our current state of penury was down to having to repay TV money back to the Television companies. It seems we're the only club that's been affected by this and other club's seem to be flush or at least willing to consider spending. I guess if you have a benevolent owner then you'll find the money from somewhere, whereas we have an owner who has his fingers in several sporting pies while not having a great deal of cash to hand.
Liverpool are having to sell to fund the signing of Thiago. Liverpool...

Fair point, but even with their huge success last season, they still are a hop and a skip behind Man City, Man Ud and even possibly Chelsea when it comes to the budgets that Klopp has at his disposal. Don't misunderstand me, Liverpool are still minted, but as with all club's, they still have to navigate between squad numbers, wages, and the budgetary demands that happens as a result of their type of success.

With hindsight, my original question answered itself, we're entirely dependent on Prem money for squad improvement and other infrastructure needs.

We may have a Prince at our helm, but he's surely the most financially lean Prince around.

That’s a fair response. Though Eze is improving with each season, and now playing alongside better players, so it’s not a big stretch to see him making an impact that alters where Palace finish.

Nothing wrong with spending what you earn. We've still spend £70+m on players in the last 12 months.

Don't really see much cause for complaint. I imagine not bowing to demands from agents and players is more to blame for us not being quicker in the window, and that'll be down to Wilder.

Which, as I wrote, is almost entirely dependent on TV money, so being in control of the purse strings isn't the same as dipping into your own wallet.....so hardly the 'tight twat' you mentioned before removing this from your reply. It's not his money Tom, you do get that, don't you?

Well it is his money, because he's our owner. But he's not contributing much external income at the moment (it seems), but it is what it is. What's the alternative? Where do we want to be?

If we're looking to challenge for the Champions League spots this season then he needs to get his hand in his pocket, but as long as he's giving it out when asked, which he seems to be doing, then we can keep improving but we have reached the top division, progress will be slower so I don't think massive changes are required so long as he's not being McCabe tight.

Sure, he could make Wilder's life easier and give him the full £130m but I'm not going to complain about our owner being sensible with the club. Wilder is all about gradual improvement and not hurting our long term prospects so I'm sure he gets it.

Champions league? Are you joking ? In this league you have to spend £40-£50 mil minimum just for a fighting chance to stop in the league. If we don’t we go backwards (as Wilder said) ... presently we are stood still.

Yes, I was exaggerating. Obviously we're a long way off setting out to qualify for the CL. Just saying, for where we are and where we want to be, it's not panic stations because we're not spaffing left right and centre.

Disappointing to miss out on targets all the same.

We’ve taken Ramsdale for £18 mil Palace got Eze for £20mil (appreciate it’s not full payment) seems like the going rate for a top championship player is £15-£20mil (defenders and midfielders probably £12-17mil)

I’m all for maximising budget but equally we want to avoid missing out on too targets.

If we don’t improve the starting 11 it will be bottom 7 next season.

And if they max up the subs it’s even more important to bring in quality.

Tom, if you seriously believe that the money in question belongs to our owner, which you clearly do, then I'd suggest you reconsider the roles of owner, guardian, and whose name is on the cheque. Wilder has already said he views the training facilities as a priority, and there are clamours for the ground to be improved, so bearing in mind that wages will, by necessity, have to rise, then the figures don't begin to look so humongous after all. The team has always to be a priority, so my thoughts are that the amounts given to Wilder will be based on discussion, need, and how vital any target is.

Unfortunately, the fact that we came close to European football last season seems to have given some supporters the idea that this will be something we pursue on a regular basis. The sooner that idea is put on hold the sooner we gain a foothold in this division. European football will happen when it happens and not before, and all the while Wilder will be ensuring that the Blades strengthen and gain momentum in preparation for whatever lies ahead.

Back from injury, but cant force his way into palace team.

Good backup option if we lose MGW?

I'd be surprised if he was available. Hasn't he only been back for a couple of weeks?

Good player but I'm not sure I'd fancy him to come to us with the same level of commitment as MGW has.

Scroll up a few posts for an insight into the polar opposites of fan thoughts in August 2020 ...
If we are challenging for Champions League places ...
If we don't strengthen we'll be bottom 7 ...
Who knew we'd be relegated with a feckin whimper ?!

We should have gone for this lad when we got promoted and I don't mean in place of Freeman probably as well as at the time.
As much as L.Freeman's time here being not a success he was a sound signing at the time.

Players we "go for" have got to want to come here though. I get the impression Eze wasn't keen to leave London.

Yeah really bad injury. I guess maybe if he needs pure, regular, game time a 6mth loan wouldn't be 100% out of the question...

But it seems very unlikely, also what would we do for the other 6mths.

If we signed Eze it would be pants off in the car park 🤣

Live in Croydon, speak regularly to palace fans and apparently he’s fell down the pecking order a bit compared to the likes of Olise.

This is a player I’d love us to sign, especially if we lose Berge
Not a chance, maybe 3/4 years ago. Some prats still would still be saying that he’s not in the ‘Wilder mould’ and too lazy even if we had a chance.

More chance of us signing the ghost of Easy-E to replace Gary Sinclair.

Surely with your connections with the spirit world, you're the right person to arrange that Derek! It would certainly liven up the half-time entertainment. Not sure his widely expressed views on law enforcement would go down particularly well with SYP though.

He would be a decent signing but it depends how well he is post injury. Is he still the same player he was at QPR.

Do we want a lad on loan who may not be fit and is only with us to get fit.

What a mistake it was to go for Freeman over this guy from QPR. I believe he was within our reach back then and would be a superb like for like replacement for MGW now if available
