On Saturday December 3rd 1977 I was a 13 year old at the reserves match at the Lane.
The scoreboard guys were busy lifting score from Cardiff and kept replacing United first team score from Ninian Park.
Cardiff City 1 Sheffield United 6.
Calvert
Campbell 2
Kenworthy
Hamilton
Woodward.
League division 2 on a rainy Saturday.
44th anniversary in effect this Saturday.

I was at the game and I am considerably older than you young man
As a 10 year old it was my first ever away match. I missed Luton away in the 90s so in those 44 years and 80+ grounds since then I don’t think I’ve ever seen us score 6 away from home again.

My dad wrote to me saying "I hadnt realised that the match was an early kick off. I was putting the wallpaper up in the lounge, switched the radio on. The first thing I heard was the commentary saying "Kenworthy had scored to put the Blades 4 up", I nearly dropped the wallpaper!"

I was also 13 and watching a game at Hillsborough (it’s a long story). They used to have a guy who updated the scores from the other matches at half time and throughout the game in United’s case. It was a long board with the alphabet representing the respective games (no electronic scoreboards back then!). For some reason United were always the last letter on the board and the crowd used to eagerly track the blokes’s progression along the old stand, hoping that he was carrying news of a home goal. The boards had a number on each side, meaning that you couldn’t always tell who had scored if there was only 1 goal in it. Anyway, can you imagine how difficult it was for me to sit still in my seat as he made the long walk for the 7th time that afternoon!

What time was kick off?
Were you at boarding school or somewhere?

I was overjoyed at the reserves at the Lane too.

Alan Woodward scored his 150th league goal in this match.
I remember being disappointed when Cardiff scored in the last minutes of the game, John Buchanan I think?
I think we were kept in the ground at the end because the Cardiff fans were obviously not happy.
A repeat of the score would be nice this weekend 😉

My dad was also a mad wednesdayite

I would go with him to Hillsboro back in the day when his mate was working and he would often come to the Lane with me

good days

we used to get free tickets from school not that it was dear to get in anyway. But often went from the manor top on the number 2 circular with mates to the 5 arches, saw them beat man utd 5-4 and Burnley 7-0 but both left me cold. Nothing compared to seeing the sun glint off Kettlesboroughs bald head as he smashed a daisy cutter into the kop end net.
remember getting off the bus at 5 arches and walking to the ground alongside Megsons dad walking to the ground carrying his boots ,,,,simpler times
