Top Attendances

Good to see us top, and by some distance.

Partly surprised at Derby with less than 20,000 but I suppose the points deduction makes the season almost a write off, so well done the 20,000 for turning up at all.

Birmingham's attendance is misleading as I recently found out they only have 2 sides of the ground open due to a lack of safety certificates, so this limits the attendances.

Overall though, Championship clubs are very well supported, so nice to see us top of the pile.

were top of the pile because of 21k season ticket holders being counted in the attendance figures whether their there or not the way were playing we would be lucky to get 20k if it was all pay on the day

Every other team has season ticket holders included too so all will be “benefitting” from this. The fact is our attendances have been excellent despite piss poor performances for much of the last 18 months.

Sunderland at home average 40k which is 12k more than ours.

The question is, how?

When we played them it looked half empty and when they were in the PL it was never full. Don't get it.

42k was the official attendance against us. Yeah ok 🤣🤣
42k including season ticket holders who didn't turn up. Same as every other ground, it's the amount of allocated tickets rather than bums on seats

Yeah thought so. Still amazing they have that many ST holders. Must be cheap up there lol.

TBF the club try to keep tickets as cost effective as possible. We aren't a rich area. I'm not sure why a football fan would criticise a club for this - for example - "ha, ha, look at Sheffield United - making football matches affordable for their fans in a working class area of England". That wouldn't sit right with me.

Saw something the other day at Man United - might get this slightly wrong but for a father to take say his son and daughter to a premier league game at OT would now cost him nearly £200 for the 3 of them. Disgraceful. At SAFC it would probably be around £70/£80 for the 3 of you - which is expensive enough.

No dig at your club or fans mate just seeing 40k average in the Championship is barmy as I remember watching MOTD and your ground wasn't full most games in the PL.

The ground holds nearly 50000 - I haven't looked back myself but I'd like to know ow how many teams have say topped our average in the second tier over the last 50 years. there wont be many. In a 50000 seater stadium and even with 40000 in there are loads of spaces. It's a big stadium built for PL football.

Even if we get promoted to the PL our crowds, given segregation etc wont be all that much higher - maybe 45k/46k at most - that was roughly what we got in our PL days, top average for the season. There were seasons that were lower.

And just for context - outside of Europes top divisions - there are only 3 clubs that can beat SAFC's average attendance - all in Germany.
Fantastic support and sensible pricing in Sunderland. Sorry to be lazy, but who are the three teams in Germany?

Cant remember them all but one of them is Schalke 04. I think Hamburg might be another.

Edit - sorry there are 4 - https://footystats.org/germany/2-bundesliga/attendance

Schalke - 61000 average in the second division. they aren't even top. Mid table IIRC.

There’s a fantastic website called worldfootball.net showing all the current and historical stats for all clubs around the world.

In the German 2nd division, Schalke currently average 61K, Hamburg 55K and Cologne 49K
Hertha Berlin (our new signing Jonjo Kenny’s team) currently averaging 48K

The divisional average is 30,030, however it’s bit of an anomaly because a few huge clubs have recently been relegated to their 2nd division
Being replaced by some small clubs who now play in the German top flight.

Thank you! They are impressive numbers.

My daughter is working near Dusseldorf, and she's been to a few different grounds this season. She says it's an incredible match day experience before, during, after, and incredibly good value. Not just the match ticket but the high quality food & drink available. It's an all day event, more like cricket or horse racing.

Compared to the UK, it's a different sport almost, and she says every game has a better atmosphere as anything she's seen in Sheffield or indeed Sunderland (she went to the 2-1 win the season before last!).

I've been to Germany twice for football - 1988 Euros and 2006 WC - beautiful country and the grounds are superb. Was at the Olympic Stadium in Munich with some West Ham fans for the Euro 88 final where Van Basten scored that volley.

Went to Nuremberg and they still have the concrete stand up where Hitler gave his speech. It's right next to the ground.

Yes it’s quite rare we see an attendance below 25K at the lane these days.

Also when you think anything over 30K has been a novelty at Hillsboro for decades
Which is poor when you realise they have a massive away end (think these days it’s down to 4,200) propping up the attendance
Where as our away end only holds 2,700, loads of restricted view seats, hassle buying tickets yet we still break 30K.
