Zero substance? I think Monty being a pathetic burden on the team as we slump to 3rd tier is enough substance, but I forget, it aint his job. His style is suited to the dark ages. Maybe you don't notrice but every single side, and Bfrebntofrd will be the same, will have better midfielders than we do, players who can do a bit fo everything, include tackle and help the defence out.

He aint a good ball winner, that's the argument Sitters, he fouls, barges inti people like an Aussie rules player and gives penalties and possession away.
And yet our last 7 managers can't spot it.

Maybe, just maybe, they can spot something in his game that helps and yet are well aware of his obvious weaknesses at the same time. A bit like me.

Not advocating Monty but people using the excuse that Doyle played over 40 appearances for Leeds in their promotion season (from League One) may remember that Monty made 40 appearances in United's promotion season (from a division higher).

Personally I wouldn't choose either. I don't enjoy watching Monty play, and can't say I remember seeing Doyle ever play (yet) but if you were going to base it on stats you'd choose Monty every time. Unless you were looking at the goals scored stat of course ;-).

Having seen both in the Blackpool and Oldham games, Doyle has looked the most comfortable and effective of the two in the system DW is playing which is the most important factor (apart from wages) IMO.

Barcelona are the greatest team in the world. Man Ure and Chelsea are relatively close behind. Who are their ball-winners? The whole team!!

When not in possession they move into high tempo pressure mode; pressing high up the field, squeezing the lesser opposition of any breathing space such that the opposition are forced to surrender the ball pretty soon. Then normal service is resumed with the proper footballers running rings around the committed but limited triers.

All this without any last ditch, muck or nettles tackling that doesn't actually win the ball at all but merely interrupts the football team's rightful possession pending a corner, free-kick or penalty.

This is replicated at all levels of football, albeit on a different scale.

"Every team needs a Monty" is a meaningless mantra. It ain't true, unless of course the team in question is committed to scruffy, scrappy non-football and enjoys chasing shadows and giving away the ball, free-kicks and penalties.

Good old Neanderthal Blades. Unashamedly:

We  Hoofing!

But we are light years away from Barca Man Utd and Chelsea. Of all their starting elevens 1 player is worth more that our whole squad. You play with what we have, That said Mcdonald will walk into the side when he signs

Such a frustrated soul. Tell me were you born a Blade in the Blood family etc?
Or did you decided to become one for yourself?
