Our wage bill...

Wilder killed our finances in two ways.
The most obvious is the flops who cost big fees.
Brewster's Millions , Berge , McKnob , Mousset 60 minutes etc etc.
The less obvious is the utterly crazy Wilder idea of giving long lucrative contracts as a reward for PAST service by players who were never going to get poached + were obviously just going to sit back + relax .... Fleck , Norwood etc etc ...the average players who'd done the impossible + got us into the PL from nothing.
Just give them their huge bonus but PLEASE don't saddle the Club with their wages for years to come.
If you wanted to completely FUCK UP A CLUB & ITS FINANCES , you would do what Wilder did.
No club with any sense or proper due diligence should ever employ him.
Wilder always made a point of saying that he’d never put the club in financial trouble and would treat the clubs money as though it were his own.

Well I’d be prepared to bet good money it takes him a lot longer to spend his £4m payoff, than it did to dispose of the clubs £100m Premier League money. Lets face it if he treat his own money like he did the clubs, wouldn’t be long before he‘d be sat outside the station with a guitar and a dog 🙄

I used to dread those contract extension social media posts.

It was a guessing game to which one of the 30+ year olds was getting a 5 year contract on Premier League money.

Goldrick this timeeh? Oh great, he'll be useful when he's 38 years old on £40k a week.

CW last seen touting for business on MOTD2

After suggesting it, how much did he actually have to do with it? It was Ron Reid’s baby.
Yeah fair enough Ron Reid was responsible for identifying, developing and nurturing the talent and was exceptionally good at it, probably the best we ever had.

But without Warnocks foresight, we would have just have had another couple of strikers.

Not paying players what they wanted ie Cash, Robinson, Maupay and ending up with Bogle, Lowe and McBurnie - isn’t that the reason we didn’t make a better fist of stopping up?

Exactly - the parachute payments are spoken for already to cover costs already spent.

The fact we cannot make permanent signings when we are just out of the Prem should be a major alarm bell.

Berge will be sold at a hugely reduced price as we need funds to claw back and he is the only saleable asset left - maybe Ndiaye.

It worries me that out situation is very Sunderland like when they came down with an ageing squad on big wages and were stuck with them.

As you say end of this season we will be massively trying to recoup what we can and many of our high earners will be moved on even for nominal fees to get them off our books - problem is someone taking likes of Brewster, McBurnie, Fleck, Norwood, Stevens, Baldock, Egan - not sure anyone would be that interested in any of them at the moment.

We will lose Mousset, McGoldrick, Sharp, Freeman and Basham which will free up wages but stuck with many of the above sadly. The loan lads will be long gone before next season too.

It is worrying that if you started a team for next season now who would you say you'd want to start and after Ndiaye I am struggling. Building a whole new team of 9-10 players is going to be nigh on impossible with no funds and you can only have 5 loan players playing. So we will have to play 4 or 5 of the above players sadly. Players who have no shown no sign of improving and are regressing month by month.

Going to be a bumpy ride folks and my concern is us being in League One before any return to the Prem. That may seem negative but the recruitment has been so poor recently that I have no confidence we can change half the side and get this thing moving in the right direction and having so many high earners that cost so much stuck here will be a major lead weight on arresting the slide as we simply will not be able to bring more in of a decent quality due to paying the flops we already have - mostly to sit in the stands.

I very much doubt our wage bill is anywhere close to what Sunderland had (although our lot are definitely overpaid).

Not going to happen this season, doom-monger!
Did you say that in 1975 ? 1980 ? 1988 ? 2012 ?
This is off the top of my head , there could be even more unexpected relegations.
But I've seen dem Blades fall from this kind of position in the past where most fans never expected it.
There is a VERY bad smell around this squad and a manager operating in his 3rd language with VERY little room for manoeuvre in the transfer market.

People have said this is like the Robson era but to be fair to the chief Alky at least some of the players he signed were good.

We have somehow managed to piss all our money away on shit and will be playing in the 3rd tier within the next few years.

A premier league club with the business sense of Del boy.

We didn’t appear to have one, but we don’t know how recruitment works now, nor how much pressure Wilder imposed to get what he wanted.
No,nobody knows,you’re all just guessing !
My god what a depressing lot you are!

The reason we didn't make a better fist of stopping up was the failure to recognise O'Connell wasn't broken and thinking that we could play the same system, opting to pull names out of a hat to play LCB rather than getting a direct replacement

And that.

How far are you going back with “recent recruitment”?

Coutts, Duffy, Stearman, Leon Clarke, Dean Henderson, JOC, Egan.

What did any of those players ever do for us ?

I suspect 3 years is a lifetime for some and only 12 months is recent.

When we talk about parachute payments being a cash windfall we couldn’t be further from the truth they were designed for allowances against wages at PL level so clubs wouldn’t find hardship.

Adding to the conversation do you think that the money we may get from saleable players like Berge, McBernie, Brewster will just pay off what we owe on them? I bet we haven’t made much on Ramsdale by the time we’ve paid up what we owed to Bournemouth there’s just a saving on his wages.

Exactly. As such, I don't know why the OP is making such a fuss, I've certainly got some trust in the board that they've not sorted any contracts that are going to cause significant issues against our long term projected income. You make think Brewster/McBurnie/scapegoat of the week sucks, but don't think their contract hasn't been budgeted for. That's what they do up in S6.

Doom-mongers like you think that.
Only coz we've seen it before over half a century of failure to capitalise on any degree of success.
Think of the last couple of years depicted on a simple graph.
What line of trajectory do you see from this :
9th in PL ,
Relegated with a whimper ,
17th in the Championship ?
You say doom-monger , I say heartbroken realist (who cares + who'll be there singing & supporting until his wheelchair won't go up the Kop steps).
But our latest self-inflicted fall from grace is hard to take.
Let's see what my own eyes tell me at Forest tonight about our prospects for halting the slide.
