Here's an interesting report on how many fans teams took to away games last season. Leeds, Forest and Pigs quite impressive actually ...

I'd like to think we'd be in the top couple for League 1 this term.

UTB!

Surprised to see Millwall and Doncaster so high. Impressive from the Pigs but I think part of that is that it is nice to be the big boy in a smaller league. The Oldham game reminds me of when I started watching United in div 4. Big club and the majority of games it felt like we had more fans than the home teams. Atmosphere was always good and we won a lot of games!

It would not surprise me if that were the first time in decades that United have had an average away support of less than 1,000. Of course, it reflects the poor results last year and the disconnect between club and fans.

I know for me personally, I couldn't justify the expense last season to visit grounds I've had ample opportunity of seeing over the past few years.

This season though, they're mostly new grounds for me which adds to the sense of having a day out.

I got the impression after chatting to many Blades fans at Oldham that they feel the same. The vast majority seem to echo my thoughts in that they were fed up playing at Coventry, Leicester, Derby etc in plastic grounds with no soul and steep prices, coupled with the bland football we were serving up. It really was a step back in time on Saturday but I get the impression that if you can forget the kudos that comes with playing in the top two divisions then League 1 and 2 are what we want football to be like and will turn up in our numbers.

It would be interesting to see what the comparable figures were for the two preceeding seasons, ours must have dropped dramaticlly in that time.

If the away attendance on Saturday really was 3750, spread over 23 matches, that would give us an average of 163, which is already more than the aggregate for the whole of last season for Macc, Morecambe and Accrington. That's not to mock those clubs and their support, it takes a special breed to travel the length and breadth of the country to follow football at that level.

Shocking figures. Knew our support had collapsed in last few years but I'm amazed at some of the teams we have fallen behind on away support.

Away followings will be much better this season with the novelty value though I must admit that good as our following was at Oldham, I thought we'd sell out.

And there's more bad news to come on home attendances - if we have roughly comparable seasons I'd guess our neighbours will average 2,000 to 4,000 more than us on home attaendances if it's right we only sold 11,000 STs and aren't doing any offers.

The club announcing it won't do any offers was a big mistake. I'm a ST & don't mind if non-ST holders are let in more cheaply - I just want as many fans there as possible.

I understood we had sold more ST than the Pigs again so the only way they will average more than us is if they have a better season and/or provide lots of freebies (as they have in the past).

As for away suppport, I'd expect us to be right up there again this season. Last season was a bit of a one off - with many fans demoralised after the Prem relegation & play off final defeat. The support at Oldham was excellent.

A quick google and dug up this article. It's actually a L**ds article about when they were in LG1, but "Only two Championship clubs, Sheffield United and Wolves, cracked 2,000. " This is only from 2 seasons ago, so shows how we dropped off last year.

Trips to Hillsborough always helped to boost our average up. A good 3-4,000 above a normal ticket allocation.

Too many years in the championship coupled with a club mving backwards fast.

I think, if nothing else, this season will get a few old heads back into the habit. Everyone I know is far keener to travel away this year than last.

It must make a difference when there is a good chance that you'll come away with three points.

There's nothing like a few goals to restore the happiness factor.
