Just wondered how people were feeling about the season ahead. We seem to have made quite a few signings, Flynn, Porter, lecs, and maybe McDonald and Kruk to follow. However looking at last night are we ready for the new season? With only 3 players leaving Ward, Hendo and Yeates and in hendo and wards case they didn't play most of the season it isn't as though we have lost key players. I was disappointed that we at least didn't get a goal last night but also expected a more positive result against a team that is likely to be in a relegation battle next season. I realise it is only a friendly but these games do need taking seriously and we need to get into a winning mentality.

So the question is are you a worried blade or quite optimistic about next season??

Never worry too much about pre-season results but no doubt, albeit from afar, we still look like a team in transition without knowing who's transitioning ! Surprised to see him start with Monty / Doyle last night unless it was just another experimental combination. I get the feeling it'll be a month into the season before the team / squad settles down, it's just a case of can we ride the storm until then.

The problem is that if we start off with a couple of poor results you can guarantee that some tool will get on the pitch and try and chin Wilson.

You can discount Brownie at least, as he aint going anymore.

I cannot decide whether the signing of Doyle when we already had Monty by the previous boss, or the playing of them both together by the new boss, is the dumber decision. Probably the latter if Wilson persists with this idiocy.

As for the main question in the thread, I would be extremely worried if I cared more about this rotten club and its rotten players, but the rotten board and rotten management have seen to it that I enter the season less interested in Sheffield United than ever before.

Were you? Really? Is surprised the right word or were you searching for "mortified"? Anyway no points lost so no worries.

Be happier if Monty Don started than that particuar combo.

If he's going to start with Monty and Doyle, maybe we could bring back The Professionals theme :D

I said at the time that Doyle was Adams' 'Monty', someone who's done that kind of job for him in the past. The thought of building our new passing revolution (sorry :)) around those two would definitely worry me.

Ave another go lad ,the first two inflammatory bitchslaps got no response
You can dredge up my fuck you Sheffield united post if you want
I'd hate to think of you missing out on the self gratification you crave

We all worry a bit at times
we all say well fuck them off at times
but deep down its a fact well be there , full of hope and expectation when it matters , at Boundary Park

It might not be perfect just now, but once we resolve a few things and tweek the odd position I still expect us to be better than most of this division, without breaking sweat

Remember that towards the end of last season a lot of people were not only looking forwards to moving on overpaid dead wood, but also fantasising about getting rid of Collins and Doyle!

Back on planet earth, it looks like the spine of the team is going to be Simmo-Collins-Monty/(&?)Doyle-Cresswell.

So yes, worried.

Note to DW: Robson started the opening game of the championship campaign with two defensive midfielders at cm - Monty and Leigertwood. Look where it got him.

Also, Williamson is not a winger and no amount of wishing is going to make it so.

"Without breaking sweat" seemed to be the default mode of last season. If it is again this season then it'll be "same 'owd, same 'owd" I'm afraid.
Hopefully everyone at the club (or at least someone!) has a more realistic approach.

Worried? Expecting the worst for the season, so I'm not exactly moved either way by the result.

0-1 v Donny in a friendly, not exactly a tonking, so i'm less worried on that side. A tippy tappy scraping of a result is becoming their trademark.

If we'd had a side that was well assembled and not assembled in fits and starts which depend on players leaving first, then I'd expect us to make a real go of these types of games.

As for Doyle and Monty, its one or the other, but not both. It'd be good to know what chances we created.

I get the feeling that it'll be at least the end of August before we get a settled side who know each other, but as we haven't had that many changes in or out then it is giving them the benefit of the doubt to sort things out.

Friendlies are just glorified training exercises , to help sort out strategies
they hit 1 good shot that won it , but the exercise was to build a team for August 6th , , and it was a reasonable display, which with the 10%-20% extra true competitive games will add was promising

Pre season results are utterly meaningless as newcastle 6-1 demolition at orient proved just before they walked the championship

There were signs of more cohesion at the back and some nice "forward" passing
Come the bread and butter stuff I still expect us to best most of this division , picking up on breaking sweat or not as a poor analogy, we still have players who when fit are better than league 1 level, and a few back from injury who will shine in this division .

Thats encouraging at least!

I have the feeling that Blackppol will trounce us.
Yes, very worried for this season - been there before so I remember the complacency last time.
Nothing has changed of any significance on the playing side of things so why expect this lot do perform any better than last season?

so if we beat Blackpool will that mean everythings great, not really
theyre training sessions

lots has changed
theres 14 inadequate loan players no longer here

theres no Gary Speed doing a half arsed attempt at being a manager, changing everything then pissing off

Last season we lost our identity and focus more than anything

Hopefully well get our mojo back

Blackpool are also in the midst of squad changes and only won their 1st pre-season game last night against Hibs. Raul can confirm how good the oppositon was ;)

If we beat Blackpool? Cannot see that happening.
Confidence is very low with the squad that still remains, despite the change in manager.
They have got into a habit of losing and cannot seem to drag themselves into the mentality of winning a game or to perform at any level of consistency. One mistake and we are a goal down - then it's a mountain to climb. Sure there are a few loans missing but in Collins, Doyle, Cresswell, Simmo, Boggy and Evans we still have a backbone that appears to be mentally spineless compared to whoever we play. Being Nosless is a massive bonus on the gifting goals front but there are few players in this squad with any pace or guile to hurt the opposition, even at Div 3 level - look at Hartlepool in the league cup last year as an example. Teams will see us as a cup tie for every league game and if we don't match them for effort and heart we will never get to a level where we can make any differential in skill pay (I am not sure we have any of that anyway).
If we don't hit the deck running then it will be a slog and will be very difficult to turn around.
I see us coasting again - especially without any significant changes to positions of leadership on the pitch.
To me there are no leaders in this squad. No one who can command any real level of respect from players and supporters alike - and that will be the crux of the season to come.

I appreciate they have lost Vaughan and Adam, probably DJC too, but they still have a lot of pace about them and some decent players.
Olle also has them attacking in numbers and switching play to stretch the opposition. This is something we fail to cope with so we are in for at least 3 conceded I reckon.

Did you actually watch the team last year? We are not better than most of this division because we were clearly one of the worst teams in the championship. Where are our 'better then league one' footballers? Simmo, Doyle, Collins and Cresswell were atrocious last year yet they are all still there. The thought of starting Monty and Doyle in the centre of mid, regardless of what division we're in terrifies me.

We CERTAINLY won't be better than most of the teams if league one if we take your attitude and think we won't have to break sweat.

I'm looking forward to the season because I always do, and simply put I love going to United matches. But I am reasonably worried that the deficincies of the team have not been addressed, we had a leaky defence and an inability to score last year a combination which got us relegated, and I can't see any difference as yet. We are pinning a lot of hope to players such as McAllister, Flynn, Maguire, Slew and Lowton. They may pan out well, but it's far from guaranteed.

It's going to be hard for the blades to get promoted this season. Many teams have been regulated and hasn't been able to bounce back on first attempt. Especially a team like united, all the s**tty teams will want a win because 'Sheffield United' will be a big game for them. Also it takes a good team to get out of this league look at Millwall, Leeds and Norwich last season, after getting promoted they did really well, this shows you need a really good side to get out of these league. In all fairness united will need a better team then last season to get out of this league.

Back to the question am I worried ... Not as worried if Wilson doesn't get results.
