If you do manage to think of a player who had 2 years off and come back, were they even close to the standard they were before being injured for that long... Sometimes you've just gotta face the facts sad as it is for JOC
I don't think it's impossible, and as Finlay suggested JOC does seem to keep himself in incredible shape, so it shouldn't be considered impossible.
But at this point there's not much more than hope, and there's always a fools hope and that's what I'm holding out for.

Who are you thinking of? I can't think of anyone who took 2 years out the modern game and came back.
I hope he's the exception but I'm not aware of anyone else making it back from that kind of lay off.

The only one that comes close recently is Luke Shaw.

Not the 1st player to be out for a couple of years and come back OK.
Disrespectful to write him off.

I’m not totally writing him off but praying he can make it back after all this time.

Luke Shaw? Not sure if it was 2 years but he was out for quite a while and seems to have made a full recovery now.

Chris Armstrong was out for a long time - I think around 20 months - and was offered an insurance payout to retire which he turned down.

He eventually got to a higher standard than he had been pre-injury, so there is hope. But the examples are few and far between.

Steve Kabba is close.

Played in the playoff final in May 2003.
Came back against Wigan after injury in December 2003. His leg basically gave way under him in that game. So sad to see.
Next played February 2005, finished the season, played really well early in the 2005-6 promotion season but in and out of the side after November, but that was more due to falling out with Warnock than injury I think.

That Evans, Welsh lad, he was out of the game for a while.

Yep that was a blow !
But 40 years ago things have changed a lot.
ACL injuries were career ending injuries, but not today!
Is it his ACL that’s gone? Have the club ever mentioned what his issue is other than it was a result of a contact injury in training.

Sure it's something regards the cartilage on his knee? I'm certain he recently had some experimental operation using stem cells.

Yeah I’ve seen some stuff doing the round about it being cartilage but not sure anythings ever been definitively labelled as being the problem either from the club or the player. Right now not knowing what the injury is and as such unable to draw comparisons to other players based solely on the time spent out of the game during what should be the prime of his career I don’t think JOC returns to the game the same player he left it if at all. Should he return I’d imagine he’ll have to significantly adapt how he plays.

Sounds a similar situation to JOC. Hopefully they both make it back to playing regularly again.

Phil Jones will return to the Manchester United squad after a 20-month absence for Wednesday's Carabao Cup third-round tie with West Ham.

The centre-back has not played for the first team since an FA Cup fourth-round tie at Tranmere in January 2020, when he was one of the scorers in a 6-0 win.
Since then, Jones, 29 has been battling to overcome a major knee injury.

He eventually had surgery 13 months ago but his rehabilitation was complicated by travel restrictions during lockdown.

It says on FotMob that he’s due to return at the end of this month.

What's FotMob? Link to article?

When (if...) he does return, we need to not put the weight of the world on his shoulders and trim our expectations of him. Every chance that he won't be the player he once was and we should be mindful that he's had an awfully long time out of the game. He'll take a while to get back up to speed.

I'd stick him with the U23's as soon as he's 100% ready to do so. See how he goes. But I'm aware even that might not happen if the worst is to be believed.

Even if all is well with the injury, and that sounds like a big if considering how long he has been in treatment, it will take him months to get back to match fitness, as they will need to break him in very gently.

I really really hope I am wrong, but it's hard to see him playing competitively again in the near future.

I hope he still got insured after, he's really poorly now isn't he? Really liked him as a player and how he came across as a person

Unfortunately, JOC's size, frame and weight won't help his recovery - they will only result in additional stresses to his knee.

Very sad for the lad who was edging close to selection by England at the time of his injury. Sad also for the club who have missed him immeasurably and have only just recruited a player anywhere near his ability in Davies.

If he makes it back then fantastic but the severity of the injury and amount of time missed will make it a huge challenge.
