"The government acknowledged that many of the breaches were not intentional"

Anyone who has ever been involved in Payroll knows that minimum pay and Living Wage are a nightmare. There are all sorts of rules that make this far more complex to administer than simply making sure that staff are paid at least £x (age, uniforms, deductions, tips) and it's those that trip most firms up. The extract above confirms that, so let's not get all judgemental.

My employer got pinged for that. Problem isn't the headline rate of pay, it's the impact of bonuses and breaks and inadvertently unpaid overtime.

If I was to guess it would be the casual staff at the Lane on low hours or low pay - ticket office, cleaners, hospitality.

That sounds like it was the club, not a subby.
I felt sure there had been a story about it, and they said it was catering firm, and United had a word, and made a statement. Fuzz of time!

I think what those firms do is 'pay' minimum wage, but fuck staff over on hours. Ie pay a start and finish time, but in practice the finish times can't be met ie cleaning up etc etc

Ah, the old “we need you in at 8am but pay you from 9am”.

Almost as Dispicable as the spelling....

Despicable is……..not paying your staff at all, ripping off your creditors (Co-op, suppliers, etc), points deductions for FFP breaches, getting the begging buckets out for Save Our Owls campaign, sacking employees on Xmas eve, having a ground with poor safety standards & no safety certificate resulting in multiple deaths of innocent people, trying to tap up the Football League for money to cover lost revenue for the disaster that you were complicit in.
Feel free to add to their role of dishonour cos I’m sure there must be more.
The sooner they go completely bust the better. They’re nowt but a shit stain on the underpants of the football world. Get to fuck you grubby, cheating, hypocritical, deluded, DESPICABLE cunts.

The stench of desperation is strong

While ever greed is in the human DNA things will never be perfect.
Wouldnt swop it for communism any time soon.
Unfortunately we humans are flawed will that be ever extinguished cant see it.

True, I don't see communism as the answer.....but am seeing green shoots of hope.....heard an example of a cleaning company paying their staff a higher wage, and treating them well. The staff were happy, doing a high standard of cleaning, the company were getting a good reputation, and more business of a higher standard.

The more companies that trail blaze this way, and it works for them. It forces bad companies that want to survive, to improve.....simples 😅 but will see, much to be done!

Edit: not always bad companies, sometimes just how this broken society has shaped things.

It’s £20k over quite a long time. A fraction of what wasn’t paid at all to the squad at S6 in a week.
Still bad PR though.

You and I both know that there's more to SUFC than signing just players but continue.
Continue what ? My question was to the guy who.started the thread who seems to think that us not signing players is because we don't pay minimum wage

I remember talking to a girl who worked for one of the catering contractors at the Lane and she said they paid minimum wage but they had to work longer hours than their ‘official’ hours to complete their tasks.

Hilarious holier than thou comments from the club who didn't pay staff and players in full for months and haven't refunded fans for tickets from 18 months ago.

There will be 3000 smelly piggies phoning into the Jeremy Vine show in a bit, because he's talking about it.

I have put a post on LinkedIn about this earlier today (not mentioning the Blades at all, just the very principle of naming and shaming.) In many years of assisting clients to be compliant with the NMW I have never known even one to wilfully try to avoid paying NMW.

I stand by what I said on LinkedIn (including the gratuitous plug at the end!). This is not something to beat the club up over.

"Today the BEIS publish their latest list of 191 employers who have failed to pay the National Minimum Wage. Each of these will suffer reputational damage as a result.

The BEIS press release accompanying the list says:

"Whilst not all minimum wage underpayments are intentional, it has always been the responsibility of all employers to abide by the law. Clear guidance is available on gov.uk, which all employers should check."

Two points here:

1. Despite a clear acknowledgement that "not all minimum wage underpayments are intentional" (and I can't recall any case I have dealt with over many years where a failure has been anything other than a genuine error) they still go ahead and name and shame. Which is draconian & unfair in my view.

2. The guidance is NOT clear. It is so easy to fall foul and make an entirely innocent error.

Anybody needing any help & advice on NMW Compliance knows where I am."

I think it was Compass Catering that were underpaying staff, I am sure it was mentioned on here at the time. Enough of us were complaining about their staff and level of service for a while. I think it took the club a while to get rid of them as the catering supplier.
They still are the catering supplier as far as I'm aware.

We're named as one of tbe football clubs fined for not paying the minimum wage. No wonder we've not signed anyone!

Good spot that I saw yesterday but didn't post the link. It starts from within, then the culture evolves to keep going until such time you are named in public. It was in the news back in the day it emerged(no link) We have well paid players who would not play for us otherwise As for all our other staff who were involved it has now been righted. Mainstream media somewhat irks me at times on pieces like this....😎

I've not seen a job advertised by the club recently but they used to pay pretty terrible wages compared to comparative jobs elsewhere. My dad worked there in the '70s and it was the same then.

Ah, the old “we need you in at 8am but pay you from 9am”.
I used to work for the Co-op while at 6th form. Two shifts officially 5pm-10pm. Rarely got out before 10.30pm - an hour's unpaid work (on £4.40 per hour) per week.

To work for this football club should be an honour and a privilege. Its not a job, its a way of life, a calling and that those who are chosen, should be glorified and worshipped as the chosen ones. To live and to serve, 1 pint, 1pie at a time and to never strain oneselves by multitasking or hurrying the fuck up. Useles cunts them compass lot, didn’t deserve the job, let alone get paid properly for it.

Sounds a bit like brewster and mcburnie should be working for them. Brewster would walk about nodding his head with a weird grin on his face then go and hide behind a bin when he went to get your pie and mcburnie would start a fight with the fridge getting the beer and end up injuring himself

Same as morrisons and I bet its the same now.

Finish at 8....

But then have to clean all the ovens and tidy up to the satisfaction of the shift manager before ya let out.

Curry's was same, close at 8, but whilst there are people in the shop (and plenty of sad twats turn up at 10 to) they can't close.
