Bit embarrassing - failure to pay NMW

Happened between 2014 - 2018 to my knowledge.Old news. Wendy fans are jumping in, they can’t say anything because rather than underpaid staff they have rarely paid ones, this should also be a warning sign that during our time in league one mistakes like this happened and that we were on a better financial footing than they currently find themselves on.

It is a shame on the club that has now been rectified but it still should never have happened and it does deserve to be highlighted but I would’ve liked to know about it at the time when something could’ve been done about it.

Yeah, this was almost 10yrs ago, and it's taken that long for someone with nothing else to do, to think,"il open this folder today, it's a bit dusty, been on this desk a while, why not.....".
 
It is embarrassing that we did this. Glad it’s sorted, but shame on whoever was behind it at the time.

I mean, I'm not sure the poor fuckers slinging Carlsberg and shit pies deserved to be short changed by the club because the first team were a shambles 😂

I'm presuming it's those sorts of workers who were affected? Does it have the specifics of who lost out anywhere?
 



From memory, it was to do with the contract firms who were running the food concessions.
They were doing it, not sufc themselves.
Obviously needs an eye keeping on it, and organisations can't just wash their hands by subbing stuff out.
Memory could be wrong though...

Shocking that any company wouldn't pay minimum wage but places like Pret i'm annoyed with. They charge nearly £4 a sandwich - a whole meal costs you about £8. Charge a fucking fortune for their food and then don't even pay their staff minimum wage
 
Would like United (and all affected companies) to make a statement explaining what happened, when it happened, why it happened, how many people were underpaid and by how much. It's particularly embarrassing for a football club when we're paying players millions of pounds while screwing over those who can least afford it.

Football club sounds better as a headline though, dunnit?

Nobody will give a shit about McColl's despite them being far worse offenders on this, but a football club? Paying millions for players but can't fork out minimum wage for staff? SHAMEFUL.

Therefore, if it was indeed just boring old Compass (think that's who we used at the time), it doesn't sound as good or controversial as naming Sheffield United.

I think it was Compass Catering that were underpaying staff, I am sure it was mentioned on here at the time. Enough of us were complaining about their staff and level of service for a while. I think it took the club a while to get rid of them as the catering supplier.

Did wonder if it was the food firms and catering etc.

I highly doubt they were paying staff that were housed within the clubs operations (Ground, training, academy etc.) anything less than minimum wage. For a start you'd kick up a fuss as an employee that your not being paid the legal minimum.
 
A spokesman for the club said the underpayments were highlighted by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and rectified in 2018 as soon as bosses at Sheffield United were made aware.

He said: "Those involved were fully reimbursed. Sheffield United is committed to ensuring that all our staff are paid fairly for work undertaken on behalf of the club.


"Processes have been put in place to ensure that we remain fully compliant going forward.”
 
It will be some wally in payroll not doing their job properly. To my knowledge it's not the Prince processing the payroll.

That sounds like it was the club, not a subby.
I felt sure there had been a story about it, and they said it was catering firm, and United had a word, and made a statement. Fuzz of time!

I think what those firms do is 'pay' minimum wage, but fuck staff over on hours. Ie pay a start and finish time, but in practice the finish times can't be met ie cleaning up etc etc
