It's a funny old game, as someone once said, but can our beloved sport be improved or should we tinker no further?

Changes to handball rules, VAR, etc have kept forums like this busy and divided opinion. Do we need an upgrade?

Personally, I would like to see money coming into the game shared differently to help support smaller historic clubs (with one notable exception of curse!) survive in the modern age.

I also muse on what we can borrow from other sports. Always admired the sin bin in ice hockey which gives instant advantage to the wronged team. I also admire to a lesser degree draft picks of young players in US football.

Over to you. Anything you could live without or think would improve things either on the pitch or behind the scenes?

Any player who is treated on the pitch must leave it for a period of not less than five minutes, just to ensure the poor dear is fully recovered from their traumatic injury and they are fully compus mentus to continue playing.

2 var referrals per team from the manager, absolutely zero ref baiting. Ref baiting, appealing incorrectly or otherwise, create points after the match. Dodgy missed tackles, shithousing, falling over under a challenge and handballing all get looked at afterwards with points applied to players and bans following.

Offside was introduced to stop goal hanging. Obvious (daylight) offsides only, and inside the penalty area only. Would be worth a trial.

Can only Loan out 5 players per year to stop Chelsea etc.

Instead of 5 players taking penalties in a shoot out, all remaining players on the pitch should take one and if either team has had players sent off, they are immediately at a disadvantage.

This. Look at any potential "dives" after matches. If it's shown to be a dive beyond all doubt, then retrospective red card and 5 match ban. It needs dealing with.

That's an interesting thought! Should apply especially for potential head injuries.

Yep, works brilliantly in Rugby. Hockey also has it. I’m a qualified umpire and cuts out any niggly tackles, back chat or other nonsense.

Clock should be on the scoreboard. Ref calls for it to be stopped whenever necessary. We all know where we stand then, no more sudden “reveals” at the end

A few comments about no ref baiting/abuse of a referee. When was the last time someone had action taken against them for verbally abusing a match official. I remember a Crewe player got sent off when we beat them at their place in 2014. But you saw it at the Euros players like Pogba squaring up to the lino and screaming because he was offside (replay proved it too) you had Chiellini constantly arguing with the referee too. Either FIFA/UEFA/FA have to hold players to account and have a law that retrospective abusing of a match official will result in x game ban or referees need to start using their cards more. The problem goes down the pyramid and Sunday morning footballers, kids and parents think it is fine to abuse a match official as long as they have a "fair play" banner up somewhere. It needs to come from the top and players acting their age and responsibilities as role models. In either code of Rugby the captain communicates to the referee, the referee will tell him who did what and fine to question but should be the captain and in the correct manner. It doesn't need to be yes sir, no sir, 3 bags full sir but a simple what was that for and listen.

I think it was about 2017 they were considering playing 60 minutes but stopping the clock every time the ball was not playable so we would see 60 minutes of action but went quiet after that. Not sure if still thinking about it
