As much as I'd hate to see any of these kids leave any time soon, it's interesting that you chose to ignore the part where he pretty much agreed with McCabe insofar as it's almost impossible to stand in their way if a Premiership team comes in for them and they want to move.

Thats the point that i've been trying to make all week.

i dont get all this contract bullshit. Why not just put youre stuck at bramall lane for 3 years unless a team comes in and offers over say 5 mil in there contract

Because they wont sign contracts like that. Just like Jags wouldn't sign one with more than £4M get out written into it.

Thats always an option, but the risk is that you have a potentially disruptive influence on team morale, or if the player shine they see out their contract and walk away for nothing.

Talented kids would also soon become wary of signing a lengthy contract with Sheffield United

Theres got to be a way to keep the lads at bramall lane surely or whats the point in spending all that money on building up a decent academy

There is . . . it's called success!

Absolutely the only way to guarantee keeping the kids is to get in the Premiership ASAP.

Obviously, the club always has the option to make any player see out there contract and forego any transfer fee, but realistically this has to be weighed against the potential for a players performance to dip and the scope for discontentment in the camp.

It would also be detrimental to SUFCs interests to be seen as a club who stand in a young players way. If Barnsley bid for one of our players by all means tell them to get stuffed.

If Man Utd say, "we like the look of that George Long" and offer to up his wage from £500 per week to £20,000 with a transfer fee of £5m that reflects his value are we really going thanks but no thanks?

If we were too deny George Long this move, what youngster in their right mind would then consider signing a lengthy contract with ourselves

The key is to have an Ajax type model whereby as one young talent moves on another one takes their place.

I'd say limited successsss at best................... and before yer say it ......... yes most clubs have to sell.....its just that were rubbish at it and the sale proceeds seem to vanish !
So for me the solution is have the yung uns sign contracts that are 'decent' .............. when/if yer sell get the VERY best deal yer can then re-invest. The money from sales shud be ringed fenced.
