KEVIN McCabe, Sheffield United’s plc chairman, will spend the weekend continuing to assess the managerial credentials of those vying to replace Micky Adams at Bramall Lane.

As the Star revealed last week, United’s board of directors have received over 50 applications for the vacant post after opting to part company with the 49-year-old following the club’s relegation from the Championship.

Former Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley chief Danny Wilson and Roberto Di Matteo, previously of West Bromwich Albion, are among those known to have expressed an interest in taking charge while Oxford’s Chris Wilder, Leyton Orient’s Russell Slade and Chris Short are also believed to be keen.

“We’ve had some unexpected interest,” McCabe said after announcing Adams’ departure. “If you look at the CVs then there are some very impressive people. Some very impressive candidates.

“But we are also putting out feelers ourselves.”

Although Di Matteo is a popular choice among supporters, his wage demands could prove prohibitive given the financial pressures associated with life in League One.

Appointing Wilson would be controversial given his previous associations with Hillsborough and Oakwell.

But, having seen Adams and his predecessor Gary Speed fail to arrest United’s slide down the table, McCabe and his colleagues know from bitter experience that sentiment must play no part in the selection process.

Both men boasted strong professional and emotional ties with Bramall Lane but had little impact on results.

Wilson’s achievements at Swindon Town and Hartlepool could prove particularly compelling for a board keen to recruit someone with knowledge of the lower leagues.

Having employed four managers, including caretaker John Carver, since August, McCabe said: “It wasn’t an ideal situation at all, I accept that, but there’s a recognition here that we don’t fire managers willy nilly and that is still the case.”

Quick apology to those who may be getting fed up with me giving links out on blades news from random sites and tabloids over the last few days its just i find them important so assume most blades fans will too

Ex-Blade and current Leicester City fitness coach Chris Short? Rather than ex-Blade and unemployed boss Craig Short? Quality journalism as always from James Shield.

You could certainly understand Chris Short being keen then, it would be quite a promotion.

As soon as things get remotely close to being a done deal the bookies will simply close the book.

It's quite clear that he meant Craig Short, though it would be hilarious if people read that and started piling money on him to narrow the odds.

Nicky Marker once played for us, and he's currently the coach at Ivybridge Town - I'm sure he'd be interested in the job. There's tomorrow's Shield article sorted (you're welcome!)

Paul Ince has gone from 50/1 to 2/1 in a day.

They don't really take much money on these markets. It never takes a lot of cash to force a major drop in prices. People shouldn't really pay any attention to market moves like that.

As someone else points out, when a deal is basically done, they close the book.

No shit. Considering the both cold and luke warm reactions to the appointments of both, it's hardly fair to say that we should consider Wilson given the appointments that have gone before.

Let's be honest, when was the last time we had an appointment that we were all generally happy with from the start? Has this ever happened?

It would be lovely to get someone like RDM and for 99% of us to be happy and excited by the new guy in charge.

Unless MM and HR are involved , it was over 16 million on betfair , when the Pompey managers job scandel arose .

Last time that happened was Howard Kendall for me

I think Spackman invoked a bit of excitement too.

THAT match against Sunderland too :(

Wonder what he's up to these days...

(Useless info time :) )
At Glenn Hoddles Academy, his last managerial appointment was 2006 at Millwall, he pulled a Steve Coppell and left after a few months.

spackman it is then.. i have no problem with that. : D as for shields.. i can't help thinking his constant pushing of anyone with wednesday credentials is a pathetic attempt at mischief making.. i mean danny wilson?.. nice enough guy but he wouldn't stand a chance

I think with everything that has gone on this season, McCabe would know better than to employ someone that would create unrest with fans, such as an ex-pig like Danny Wilson.

You'd think he'd know better....but you just never know!

Many many years ago when Wilson was at City I was living in Bath. I'd just resigned from my magazine job so had been escorted out of the building. I was sitting the pub next door meeting people who had just heard I'd left the company so was having a few beers. I noticed Mr Wilson sat near the bar so I stumbled over to him said I thought he'd done a great job at Hillsborough. He asked "what are you talking about, we were relegated" to which I said:"I didn't say I was a wednesday fan, I'm a Blade so cracking job." He wasn't impressed but I'd enjoyed it.
