The Kids from the club that went had a great night.

I enjoyed the game, second half we looked more compsed but we still sat off Man U too many times, and though the football was nice we need to be a bit more direct (not hitting it long but just being quicker) at getting forward at times, we turned back too many times and Man U figured it out a few times and we put ourselves in far more danger than we needed to be. On the whole though the lads played very well, Long made some great saves, Harry looked good and the stint in the first team certainly has helped, same with Slew. Whitehouse looked better second half, Harriot looked assured and very comfortable, Kennedy made some decent tackles, and was strong and a stunning goal by Macfazden (sp?) the lads need to keep their shape alot more in the 2nd leg they lost it a few times in the first half and 2nd by being a bit too eager. Great night.
 



I went last night and would like to complain. On the pitch were a bunch of useless kids, completely uncoordinated and lacking in any kind of talent or skill. But enough about 'Dance Daze' (the pre-match and half-time 'entertainment') Who thinks the aimless gyrations of a bunch of brats in any way constitutes entertainment?

Back to the lads. Top night. Obviously a bit nervous but will stand them in good stead for the future. Yeah, Man U had class all over the pitch but they would have, obviously. Not over by any means.

The only discordant note in a very very enjoyable night indeed was, as per, Garyoke with his cringeworthy "I've got a feeling, tonights going to be a good good night" DJ lead in to the song at h/t.

That aside, 10/10 to everyone else connected with SUFC last night. We're still a bloody great club you know.
 
I thought Kennedy looked a class act and by far a better defender than Maguire (whilst not taking anything away from Maguire because they're totally different 'types' of defender)

His positional play, sense of danger, awareness and reading of the game showed class well above his age.

Put into context that one of the hottest young strikers in England (Will Keane) had a relitavley quiet game aside from his tap in.

He'll probably have to grow a foot or find a new position before he can cope with the physical challenges of the professional game but he seems to have a lot of those 'you cant teach that' attributes about him.

Sheffield United 2 Manchester United 2: Young Blades are a top draw in FA Youth Cup

Bramall Lane's biggest crowd of the season saw Sheffield United score their best goal of the season in the FA Youth Cup final first leg against Manchester United.

Callum McFadzean hit a sledgehammer in the Steel City to bring 29,977 fans to their feet and give them hope in the second leg against the record nine–times winners at Old Trafford next Monday.

The Blades’ previous top attendance this season was 23,728 in the Championship
against Leeds and the average was 20,632.

Tuesday night’s crowd was treated to a fabulous match that could have ended in a
goal-glut.

Goals from Jesse Lingard and Will Keane for the visitors were cancelled out by strikes from McFadzean and Jordan Slew and there were numerous goal line clearances and excellent saves.

Manchester United went ahead in the 16th minute in dubious circumstances.

Lingard’s shot was diverted skywards by the body of goalkeeper George Long and as the ball looped towards the empty net, defender Harry Maguire appeared to head the ball off the bar and away.

But the assistant referee flagged for a goal which even surprised the visitors.

But midfielder McFadzean struck to level just before the interval with an unstoppable left-foot drive from 30 yards.

The Manchester side went ahead again in the 70th minute through a sublime goal constructed by French talent Paul Pogba.

Will Keane tapped in after Lingard had volleyed Pogba’s chip across goal.

Jordan Slew, who has two Championship goals to his name this season, equalised almost straight away. His shot from distance took a telling deflection off Manchester United captain Tom Thorpe.

It was all Sheffield United deserved and on this evidence they have more than a chance at the Theatre of Dreams next week.

Thought the lads did well against a team of individuals who are better players but that doesn't always mean a better team, yes they had more pace and we did stand off them and perhaps gave them too much respect to start with, and the goal knocked them for six for a while, I've just watched it on mutv and honestly think it didn't cross the line or Harry handled it as it came down onto him, am I the only one??

I don't mind 'new' fans going last night, it was great to see a full ground, and if they like what they've seen they might just come back next season, creating more revenue, more shirt sales, more sponsorship = we might just be able to buy some better players

Totally agree.

Who would have thought that such a dismal season would end on such a wave of optimism.

I was proud of the dignity with which we the fans accepted our deserved relegation against Barnsley and I was proud of the way we turned up to support the new generation last night.

I was also proud to watch a team of predominantly home-grown Blades more than hold their own against one of the best youth teams in the world.

I genuinely believe that we are at the start of an exciting and enjoyable journey at SUFC, a journey which will hopefully end up in the Premiership in a few seasons time.

Whoever is fortunate enough to inherit the SUFC hotseat will be a lucky man indeed,this year has been a nightmare, but we look primed to come back better than before with a team that we can all relate to and is financially viable and sustainable.

To add another GS quote from last night……. "The futures bright, the futures red and white"

Very noticeable size difference between the two teams, much as it was between us and most other teams when we went up to The Prem last time.

Anyone else think Degsy Geary was back when Wilkinson came on?

I've been told by a Manc today that the 2nd leg will be close to a sell-out so looks like the record will be well and truly shattered on Monday.

Final game of the season Sunday, Youth Final Monday, Gary Neville's testimonial midweek and Champions League Saturday. Not a bad week !

Very impressive ticketing system they've got though.
 



A guy at work says that there used to be some kind of 50 mile limit on who could play in the youth teams ie the players had to come from within 50 miles of the ground. Was this the case? Obviously not any more I wouldn't think going on the fact that sceveral of their players were from overseas.

However, in our case I think it was the case which makes last night's performance even more of an achievement.

I think it's changed, without checking I'm sure they said last night that all our players weren't homegrown, Harriott I think was one, from Luton I seem to remember.

There's of course ways round it.... if for instance the family moved.
I've heard of instances in the past where a players father would be given a job locally, so they would then move into that area. The player would then be in the catchment area, not sure if any restrictions apply now though
 
Well, last night goes down for me as one of the best Bramall Lane experiences in nearly 50 years of wtching the Blades. Excellent entertainment on the pitch, good football - United matching Manchester despite the colossal gulf in resources between the 2 clubs.

I love the competetiveness and grit of first team games but what a feelgood factor there was last night, no yobs, a really appreciative local family audience.

I heard one young girl say ' can we come again on Saturday Dad?

Shouldn't football be a bit more like this? Well done Blades - win or lose next week, last night was something special.

I agree, in many ways in terms of feel good factor and enjoyment it wasn't dissimilar to the Forest play-off match.

They didn't match Manchester territorially all night...or physically, or with the same savvy.
However, what United had was a very good Coach who knows how to shape his team and smother the opposition. It didn't work as well as in other matches simply because Manchester had by far the more sophisticated players, as you would have to expect, given their resources. United made up their shortfall with their own brand of football which includes a great deal of tenacity and will to win.
You could see at the end of the game that United had had a very tiring night chasing the ball and had been unable to give Manchester the same treatment.
Despite that it was an excellent result but they will have to defend like gods to keep a clean sheet at Old Trafford.

Don't need to keep a clean sheet, just score more than they concede ;)
Agree that we showed more desire and a will to win, I'm sure their coaches will have them prepared for the contest at OT, but you can't help but be proud of the young blades effort and the quality that they did show.
No one likes losing, all that you can ask is that they give their all and don't let anyone down, they certainly did that last night and I'm sure they will do the same Monday. If they ultimately lose to a better team (individually) then so be it, just look at the resources afforded to the two to see how well they have done.

It will be a difficult return at Old Trafford ,the boys will be up against officials looking to impress the Premier League club as well as their team which has a blend of home grown and international players.
Our locally grown lads do play well together as a team and they will be hard to break down,we just need a bit of luck.
They have cut their teeth in front of a big crowd so they shouldn't have as nervous a start,the lads really turned the table in the second half hopefully that will carry over into monday.

Hmmm... Whilst I enjoyed last night, it was about a million times dissimilar to my feel good and enjoyment of that Forest match.

It's great that the academy is doing well, playing good football, is well managed and we're in the youth cup final for the first time. I've been to the Blackpool and Villa matches before last night and enjoyed them too. But having said all that it's not a patch on what happens to the first team.
 
someone told me that Man utd's youth team cost 16 million to put together.
 



A very expensive academy then but when you have the draw of Man U, then it's something to be expected. I myself think the Academies should solely be about home grown nations talent.
