New training building

So looking at the picture above, which are the areas we're talking to the council about?

Recent pic of the site, courtesy of my brother. The hangars are nearly gone (apparently there was asbestos). He reckons there's an underground bunker, dunno if that would complicate matters.
Generally "butch" types aren't they.
Comments like this really don’t help. Imagine someone said this about one of your family.

I think I read, the council got some of the land from the Gov, presumably that would mean, either a site that had a former 'Gov' building or structure, RAF/NHS,, there used to be a handful of houses, Lightwood Lane? That were NHS, 30 odd years ago

I’d love Chansiri failing to pay and united sending in the bailiffs.

Though there is nothing of value there, apart from a pair of plastic elephants painted gold.

White paint would have been a more appropriate choice of colour. 😂 😂 🐷 💩 😂 😂

I'll point out it was a steelworks sports and social club ,with the best communal baths in Sheffield football .
True...
My early forays into local senior football were up at Firth Brown S & SC.(early 70's).
Great pitches, lovely social club and as Totl says, great deep communal baths. Opposition teams loved playing there.
As for it having potential as a top class training complex, that's a different story...

There is a lot of ground contamination apparently owing to its previous uses. It was owned by Homes England (a government agency responsible for delivering homes) and had been earmarked for residential development but the clean up costs were proving prohibitive and hence nothing advanced. I’m guessing that it can be brought forward for a leisure use without the same expensive remediation requirements.

According to some, Wilder was making it all up about being frustrated about the lack of improvements with the facilities when he left.
If players are starting to speak out about it now too, that's not good.
Also like Wilder players at many other clubs are used to better facilities, makes an easier sell of the club if you've got better to show.

Norwood on the training ground:

Seems fair enough to me, the facilities do look both dated and cramped. I'd be complaining if my employer had me housed in some shit old office space.

The club should really try and prioritise this. It won't hold a huge amount of weight, but it may make some players think twice about joining, if the margins are fine with other offers that might be on the table.

Oli see his future as being at The Lane..

this will I think split opinions..

We should build a housing estate with a pub and some nightclubs for the players, so they can walk home instead of binning their supercars.

Put a chippy on it for Moose.
A Londis, bookies, chippy, launderette and a little wool shop on the corner.

Maybe Players need to realise more Authorities than just the owner are at hand with regards to the development of any new facilities.

Norwood and the players should be totally focused on making up for the utter shite they delivered last season. I agree the training facilities need improving - and Shirecliffe was alway a bonkers location - but not sure going public in this way is the best way forward.
Don't forget Oli knew Slav previously. Wouldn't surprise me if Slav was a bit shocked upon seeing Shirecliffe in person and has spoken to Oli about it at some point

As much as we would like things to happen overnight they don't, you could argue that the list for potential new sites to build a new facility on, will be pretty short, re location and costs, but then factor in applying for and getting planning approval, the ever present unknown, possible 'trip hazards' from undiscovered and unknown industrial buried waste, archeological finds, not to mention the natural world and building projects that have been delayed by a colony of newts or bats. Throw in relegation and Covid, and finally even worse than a worldwide pandemic, bats and industrial waste, dealing with Sheffield city council, no wonder the site at Norton isn't up and running

Strange how he wasn’t complaining about the training ground when we were flying in prem.
Is that his excuse for being gash last season?

My guess is they probably were internally but it’s got to the point now where they’ve gone public to push the board to get on with it. Don’t blame them if I’m being honest

The issue is that the new building was planned to be in place now. The players obviously knew about this, as it was in the public domain. I'm guessing the silence about when the project may recommence, is why Ollie is speaking out.

We call this expectation management. Some fans aren’t used to this after a few seasons of success under the previous manager and the great disappointment of last campaign.

Slav: "Oliver, come here. Now listen, I've just got here so I don't want to, how you say? Piss on owner's chips, but that training building is an absolute shithole. Can you mention it for me please? Sorry about not playing you in the Prem."

Norwood pocketed a fine salary last season for being slightly better than wank. Generally speaking, for large chunks of last season, he could barely do the basics of a PL level midfielder. Specifically, his overall set piece delivery was poor, his ability to beat the first man at corners was woeful. I seriously doubt the facilities at Shirecliffe had any affect on this.

This should be in place by now construction industry hasn't stopped since then really.
Interesting it says in this article too that it's built off site to minimise disruption and speed up the process.
I'm gonna say I reckon it's not yet started to be built and no foundations are down either.

Perhaps Ollie shouldn't mention anything and just get on with it, but could be that if they've been promised and asked about it for past 18months and still no sign of anything, maybe mentioning it to the media puts the light back on it.
It certainly suggests that there was something in Wilder's complaints regards training facilities too.

Wonder if Oli is referring to improving the existing training facility - there were the pictures of the proposed new modular training facility, or if he's referring to a brand new facility full stop (Norton)? Either way, improved facilities are clearly needed, I suspect that the move to Norton will only happen if we get promoted.
