Remember the lad who often came on radio Sheffield after the games on the way home, forget his name but he was a very passionate blade who liked to give his opinion on the game and signed off with 'come on you red and white wizzzzzzzards' I believe he moved to Portsmouth some years ago, could that young man be pompey?
Jason

Thanks Pommpy for your insightful and entertaining reports, I couldn't wait for the season to end, tough being a Blade at the moment however we are the eternal optimists on to next season, best wishes to all Blades for a great summer, take care and roll on August

Cheers Pommpey, one of the many post match threads that have kept me entertained all season.

Onto today:

First thing, regardless of the quality of football on display it was incredible to be back in a stadium watching the game in the flesh. There were more in the ground than I expected with the reports of those not attending. Genuinely emotional when the players came out to warm up and then for the kick off.

Onto the game, if I was watching on the tv I’d have probably put something else on as it was pretty crap in terms of football played. My scores might be influenced by the joy of actually seeing the match not on the tv.

The Blades, great defensive display and had a few glimpses of decent football going forward without creating that many decent chances.

Ramsdale - 5/10 - Made a couple of saves I’d expect him to make but went back to his early season flappy best at times and was saved at the end by Robinson.

Basham - 7/10 - Did the necessary today at the back, hesitant at times going forward but unlucky not to score. When moved into midfield gave a bit of assurance for the last 5. Love the bloke and hope he stays.

Robinson - 8- won a lot, did the sensible things and got forward where possible, linking up well on the left with Enda. Saved 2 points at the end. His best game yet.

Egan - 7.5 - Head on a stick today, did well against a big awkward bastard in Wood. Calm on the ball when he needed to be, was organising a lot at the back as well.

Baldock - 6.5 - solid but lucky not to have made contact with Brownhill early on. He was never really close enough to his man so ended up giving some daft fouls away. Positive going forward but just needs to cross it sometimes instead of going back or sideways.

Stevens - 6 - Same as Baldock with a couple more unforced errors really. Had a few chances to play a good ball in towards the end and never found a Blades player in the box, but it’s a start that he got into those positions.

Norwood and Fleck - 4.5 each - both fairly anonymous throughout the game, both gave the ball away a few times and both lack the physicality to play at the top level. Did have a couple of corners each where they beat the first man so it’s a start. Both need replacing for next season if they don’t shape up.

Osborn - 7 - seemed to be all over the place and linked play really well. Quality isn’t quite there but his effort is tremendous.

Jebbison - 6 - Must have been hard for him against Tarkowski and the other unit but he worked hard and nearly created himself a scoring chance late on. Made the 34 look stupid a few times by closing him down. Hope we keep developing him.

McGoldrick - 8.5 - what can I say?! Absolute joy to watch and he’s obviously enjoying himself at the moment. Half a mark off for a couple of sloppy passes but the guy oozes class.

Hecky - 7 - Solid performance, used the subs well at the end, Bash in midfield was a

Brewster - 5 At least looked like a footballer when he came on. Had a poor shot and fell over, about par for the course.

Jags - 5.5 - Career farewell for Jags I reckon today. Got beat in the air a couple of times.

Can’t comment on next season but I got my passion back today, battling performance and 3 points.

MASSIVE summer ahead both manager and players wise. Would be happy with a cull of some of the old guard (Fleck, Norwood, Stevens).

Whilst I admire Burnley and Dyche for doing what they’ve done so well in the last 5 seasons, the football they play is turgid and I wouldn’t like to watch it week in week out from the Blades. It was all just launch it up to Wood and play off him or work it to a full back and let him lob it in the box. The number 34 was bobbar at the back and got bullied by Jebbison a few times. They liked to hit the deck and ended up with 4 up front, all one paced, big and shit. Lowton looks a bit chubby as well 🤷‍♂️

Generally an enjoyable read in an unenjoyable season, although tbh the edge has been taken off the last few weeks down to my father's death. It puts things in perspective.

If you've got a minute tomorrow give a thought for me as I take his funeral at 12.15. He was 98 & was in the initial assault on Sword Beach on D da at 7.25amy, & is one of the very last from his Battalion, the East Yorks, to have survived this long.

RIP Dad!

Missed the game, the first time this season. Glad we won, but to be honest, I haven't missed much by the sound of it and the hesgoal stream was unavailable. I also booked for me and my missus to get a bite to eat to celebrate today being thirty years since we met. She's been with my through this oddessey - away end at The Dell for Zico Lake's goal, several tedious home and away games win lose and draw and was with me when Corky broke away at Wembley as we were the only two screaming being sat partly amongst pig fans. She's also seen me depressed and elated in equal measures at the Wigan game and Tongy's brace vs Liverpool, and sat through my swearing and cursing at the shower of shit this season. We've met players and managers, our lad has been mascot, and she's bought me countless Blades kits and accoutrements, sometimes shipping them out to me overseas whilst deployed. And we both stood in that car park two years ago in possibly the most wonderful day I've had as a Blades fan. So I think I owed her, rather than that lot today.

Thanks to everyone who has pressed like on 'My take ... ' this season and especially those who have contributed either way to the match debate. Some have not been quite as focussed and for those you'll be relieved to know that 'My takes ...' will not be as regular next season for obvious reasons. I do hope maybe you can contribute your own take on the match so others can be as charitable.

Anyway, it's all over. Possibly the most pivotal and noteworthy season in Sheffield United's history simply because of our shocking collapse in performance and form. We've lost so much, cash in dud players, reputation as a footballing side and faith as supporters and moreover, Chris Wilder as a manager found out for footballing tactics, leadership and consistency. The season end couldn't come quick enough for me and I don't think I have ever felt that ... ever. We've always had a dog in the fight but this season has been a comprehensive example of how not to play football at the top level. The last two seasons have also shown lessons on how not to scout and recruit, even at vast expense. None of our purchases have even been near their value and our system is deeply flawed. And we are still without a permanent manager with all sorts of grim rumours as to who may be in charge next season, and expectation running low.

It's hoped a vast clear out of our Premier League failures is inbound and really, no one can deny this is what is needed, coupled with a new strategy which doesn't surrender advantage and actually creates the crackle of excitement missing for so long. If we sell cheap to improve, so be it, as long as there is improvement and we don't do the Sheffield United thing to sell cheap to buy cheap, simply to further decline.

Thanks for everyone's support, thanks to my fellow reviewers and view-fromers, thanks to the video blog teams for some pretty bloody epic, professional output and thanks to our football club as a football club, if not the players who really, haven't graced themselves with much noteworthy praise. I felt destroyed when we dropped the final day against Chelsea, and similarly versus Wigan but now I feel like a patient with a terminal illness now waiting for death to quietly overtake now the life support has been switched off.

Here's to our resurrection next season. Don't let us down, lads.

Cheers pommpey

I'd say it was more entertaining than the football but that's a given.

A season that has been about as much fun as a Gastroscopy

Great respect to your father, may he rest in peace with our gratitude.

My own father, the man who made me a Blade, passed in 1999. He was with 402 Artizan Works Royal Engineers, and also landed in France, albeit further up the coast. He was involved in the sweep southward toward Italy.

Like many of you I lost interest a while ago and have missed a few games. I didn't even know we'd played at Newcastle till yesterday, but I watched some of today and it was pleasantly energetic.

It was enough to make someone naive think that this lot might be good enough to emulate Norwich or Watford - after all we've ended up with more points than Norwich did last year - but that's just a mirage. I'm sure Norwich can't have been as bad as we've been this year and today was really just end of season stuff for half-arsed Burnley.

Just like the old adage that you should never buy players based on their showings in World Cup or Euro tournaments, decaffeinated end-of-season kickabouts are not the place to assess quality. If we did that we would get the impression that Jack Robinson could be a defensive lynchpin next season. I'm pleased for him personally that he's been playing well as I considered it cruelty beyond endurance when Wilder kept selecting him to be humiliated every week, but he hasn't got the ability to be more than a Championship back-up player wheeled out for the League Cup, so let's not think that the rest either are now definitely going to have us challenging. We need a lot of new faces and some new ideas.

Burnley are a lesson in themselves. After reading Roygbiv's View From it's obvious that a lot of Burnley fans themselves are bored to death with them, and the fact is that if you actually enjoy football - and I mean enjoy it, not just love accumulating points - then merely surviving ever year is not good enough; the ends don't justify the means.

I suppose our ambition is to become a yo-yo club of the Norwich/WBA ilk, as transcending that as Leicester have is an almost impossible task, but being that means the joy and elation of promotion is going to have to be paid for by the despondency of losing regularly the following season.

This I could take, definitely. But I hope to God that for whatever is left of my life I don't ever have to see a season like this one again. Nor be patronised by the manager just because he'd done well for a couple of seasons before. I'm yet to be convinced he isn't just the next Phil Brown.

Thanks to all the brave souls like pommpey who start threads and spark debate that's more interesting than anything has been on the field.

Thanks Pomps, always find your analysis entertaining and, in the spirit of a more tolerant era, challenging, acceptably offensive sometimes and, for all that, a really worthwhile element of this forum. My love affair began with Badger, Woodward, Birchenall, Hodgkinson and Jones. Cricket pitch to the side and the misty eyed adulation of my very much younger self. I’m just thankful that this season is over. We’ll see what comes to pass over the summer but I remain a believer...... bless us all my bladey boys and girls.
And Pommpey- don’t you dare stop 😉

Thanks Pommpey, we all have different views with one common theme, the love of our club. This season has been effing awful but when you read replies about people going to their fathers funeral tomorrow, you have to take a step back and think it's only football.
Enjoyed your posts and long may they continue.
UTB everyone. Things will get better, they did before and they will again.

I don’t get the ‘My takes will not be as regular next season for obvious reasons ‘ bit .

This would be the equivalent of a manager generating a huge amount of admiration and goodwill among fans , only to let them down by walking out of the back door when the going got tough .......

Totally unacceptable .

Thanks pommpey for a season of often challenging, occasionally incorrect (in my opinion!) and always colourful and humorous views and ‘takes’ on the games. Like Deadbat and Roygiv you take the time and the dedication to put up a weekly parade of straw men for us to debate and challenge. There has been precious little entertainment on the pitch so good to have had a reminder on this forum from people like you of what it means to be a Blade. Thanks also to Foxy and Linz for the same reasons. Much appreciated - see you all on the other side!

Yes thanks, pity you missed the match, United were playing at home. It was good. Sat in the away end for the first time ever in nearly 60 years. Saw the future England’s goalie return to us. We won

Thanks Pommps, enjoyed every one of your takes. 10/10.

Hope Mrs Pommps gave you a 10/10 performance.......she probably deserves more for putting up with you😉

And finally, 10/10 for the Desso......money well spent😉

Have a good summer 👍

Keep em coming Vic, you know you can’t help yourself, after all this is what being a Blade is all about.

Thanks for all the "My Takes" this season pal.

Weekends won't be the same without your painfully accurate match reports, your harsh-but-fair marking system, and the hilarious and creative use of swear words!

It wasn't a bad game, we won, clean sheet, fans back.

Have a good Summer.

Yeah, cheers for the reports, Pompey. You made me laugh during an exceptionally miserable season (the bringing Billy Sharp on to get the song going line was the funniest).

I hope it went as well as it could Vicar. Thanks to your late dad for what he did all those years ago. RIP.

Thanks for the reports Pommpey, for the hard work, dedication, and ability to make me laugh out loud during an awful season and even worse 14 months.
Roll on next season and hopefully a bit more to cheer about, both in football and in life!! 🍻😊🍻
