Has there ever been a good game between us and Newcastle?

I have told this story many times, but whenever I read about this game I think of Revolution Sr and his Dad running down Shoreham Street trying to get there for the start of the game.

14 year old Revolution Sr outpaces his Dad and gets in with the score at 1-0 after 2 mins.

My Grandad gets there after 5 or 6 minutes: it's 3-0 already!

early seventies blades won 2-1 at st james park around new years time
we scored early on and I missed it getting in but was a cracking game


and a home game when we were 2-1 down with 3 minutes left and won 3-2 in the sixties

I was away on holiday in Austria with school that week, first thing I asked my dad when we got back, how had United done? Drawn 1-1 at home with Wrexham (I think) and won 3-1 away to Newcastle. I couldn't believe we'd won at St James' but could only draw at home versus Wrexham. They did seem to have a mixed bag of results in that run in, won at the Mags, hammered Notts County and West Ham at the Lane, but got hammered at Sunderland and Cardiff!

Could well be. I am ashamed to say I don’t remember a thing about the game. In my defence:
1. I was only 7 at the time.
2. My parents were keen on celebrating the New Year, and I will have been up until well after midnight, and therefore not in my sharpest frame of mind. I would not have had any alcohol, mind; which is more than can probably be said for the Newcastle team!

December 27th 1971 (Boxing Day Monday). Stewart Scullion scored after 21 secs. Nearly got crushed when leaving the ground

Played against us in April 1972 and we won with a David Ford goal.

Tudor's winner was in August 1972. I met him, his wife and his mother in law outside the ground before the game to have a chat. It was agreed that we would meet again after the match. At the end of the game I told my dad that I didnt want to meet John as I was angry with him scoring the winner. My dad talked me around and eventually I agreed to meet John. On meeting him , his wife etc my dad told him that he had to persuade me . John laughed and said "I am so sorry"

I remember a very dull, second-tier home game against them; I think it was in the nineties. They won 1-0 with a deflected own goal (Stancliffe?) at the Kop End.
 



Those early seventies games were brilliant Geordies always up for a battle nowt to do with the football though

Mid sixties blades3 toon 2.We were losing 2 nill jim illey ( ex blade ) scored a cracker for them at the kop end
We recovered in 2nd half in atrocious weather ( pissing it down like today ) conditions .not sure which order our goalscorers were ! Tony Wagstaffe got one I think long time ago so difficult to recall.
The fans played a big part as we do today driving the players on for a late winner.

In the days before segregation! I was stood on there massive open end as it was then no cover from weather
A lad of similar age to me 14 (Newcastle fan )was in tears as the game entered the last 20 minutes they scored soon after and this brought him to life ,we saw the game out no trouble that great defence of ours did the business as usual..
No trouble at the end even though toon and blades mixed together ( wouldnt it be great for fans to behave like that today )
It wasnt long after this time that segregation had to come in as violence somehow became common from mid sixties on would.
Great day out for blades fans,as a kid no boozy for me but I know lots was drunk that evening.

What a day! We were standing behind the goal where Russell’s goals went in. That game, and the Everton away match in Round 3, are the ones I associate with Ilkla Moor; at 13, I don’t think I had a clue what the words meant, and I certainly had no idea what Blaydon Races was about, but that to me is what football should be about. Helped, of course, by the fact that United won...

United finished 3rd from bottom and avoided relegation. Remarkable tally of 15 wins, 91 league goals.
 
I have learned a lot tonight.
Norman Wharton, keeper, no relation to the more famous Arthur, was a keeper too. Made 70 appearances over 3 years for us.

I was twelve then, surely must have been to that match, though no, despite the score line, recollection of being there.
I didn't get to every match, pre playing, adult football, days, but Christmas-New Year games were certs and that was a couple of years before girls rose up to 'disconbobulate' proceedings.

Don't know who Mr S Gibson was but the rest of that forward line knew where the back of the net was. Combined, scored a good few goals for the Blades.
No doubt there was some "Tunny Dunne it" in that game.

Ronnie Simpson's career spanned more than a quarter of a century. He played in wartime football for Queen's Park when he was 14, and finished with Celtic at 40.

Sid Gibson played what was described as "the game of his life" in the last day 5-1 win at Old Trafford. He was a winger I think. That was the only time we've avoided relegation on the last day of the season (well, save 1988, when we went down in the playoffs anyway afterwards).
